I am Peggy Mc Guinnes owner of Peggy’s Backpackers. The place was opened as an accommodation place mainly for surfers which would gone from all over the world. Mainly for the beautiful waves and a reasonable price which was R10 P.P Per Night.
The houses namely the main house which is the newer of the two and a very rustic place. Dating back to 1930 it is a very large house & furnished with vintage furniture. I have never wanted to modernise it as it capture’s Jeffrey’s Bay as it was back then. This property as told by the original owner was the original holiday Resort of Jeffrey’s Bay
There was no town at all and it stretched the length of Oribi Street and down to the beach which was one road back from the first flats in the holiday resort were built by a Mr Den Hoed after the first World War.
The surf shack is the oldest standing building in J.Bay. This was the owners fathers holiday house and was the first Fruit & Vegetable Market in the Humansdorp district a 15 min drive in Land which was all farm land & they used to bring their products to this market which was built in 1880. Later it was dismantled and the owner the owners father brought it here by OX cart for his holiday house in the early 1900’s. Once again it is a very rustic place with all the original oregan pine trusses as well as the floor.
The owner said and once again I would never modernise this beautiful wood & iron place that has stood the test of time. The property is very large & had farming rights.
I myself was raised in East Africa Tanganyika ( Tanzania ) in and my father was with the royal marines as a frogman and sent to Japan. After that he joined the British police for the assignment with the rebel group called the Mua Mau. Life was very different for us as children. Our nannies were the resident Swahili people. We could speak Swahili fluently and then English. My father loved the bush and often would be on safari which was a camp bed in the open and a roaring fire to cook on and Lions & Hyenas roaring around us.
The wild animals roared freely in those times. My father was born in Botswana which was Bechuanaland protectorate a British colony and his grandparents were the first travelling by Ox cart. After I left school I went to Durban when I was 17 and that was my introduction to the surfing culture. We were free spirits and that is what this place depicts. Then went to Australia where we lived for surfing and being free. We would work in the factories at night just so we could go surfing during the day.
In 1981 I arrived in Jeffrey’s Bay. It was a tiny fishing Village a very small surfing community. My friend had just started a small surf shop called Country Feeling.
The clothes were all made here by the coloured African women. Surfers were always arriving from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth & Durban as well as Brazilians, Australians & New Zealand. There were small industries popping up such as leather sandals & moccasins. There would be a guitar local player jam at the pub and we all lived very simply either having a braai or party at one anothers places and of course watching those beautiful barrels at Super Tubes with a handful of guys riding them. To my delight this property come up for sale which my father bought in 1990 in his passing left it to me in his inheritance. My décor is very bohemian with a blend of African & Bali Throws cover chairs etc. The rooms are décor with an African theme in fact this is what the decor depicts African with a surf theme. This is Africa & Slowly they are bringing in a European element. My place takes literally 2 min to the beach and is very close to the surf breaks as well as 2 Super Markets. The lonely planet describe this place in about 1995 as a rustic place on the out skirts of town. The true backpackers when I started would love this place & would always leave very nice comments in the visitors book. They would eat their breakfast outside under the trees relax in the garden & there are 3 braai places so pull in to Peggy’s place & enjoy the original vibe of Jeffrey’s Bay. It is budget accommodation not a Five Star hotel or anything like it & Air B&B needs to stress this point & see photographs.
I want to comment on the type of people who booked in here had no idea of a Back Packers & in fact only booked in for the price & though it would be 5 Star Accommodation. I have had many South African do the same. It is a fairly new thing.
