Small but MASSIVE, our apartment has everything you need for your stay in Rio, including air conditioning, super fast wi-fi, a fully equipped kitchen, an extra-comfortable bed, two bicycles, and 24-hour security, close to all the action in Lapa.
New photos just added! __________________________________________
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
This is NOT your typical vacation rental. This is our home!
We designed and decorated the apartment ourselves, turning what used to be a tiny, dingy bat cave into one of the most colorful and inviting apartments in the area —it even got featured in the city newspaper on a piece about creative use of small spaces. Everything you see here was handpicked, designed, or made by us.
We live here when we don't have guests staying, so it's fully functional and has all the things you could possibly need for your vacation.
► If you want to cook while you are in Rio, our kitchen is equipped with stove top, microwave, fridge, blender, and all the pots, pans, oils, spices and condiments necessary to cook up something tasty. Don't be fooled by its small size: this little kitchen has fed over 25 people at the same time!
► If you are traveling with someone but don't want to share the same bed, we have a comfy futon downstairs, which can be turned into another double bed.
► We have just installed air-conditioning, meaning you'll probably not want to leave the apartment on the days where the temperature is over 40 degrees. We also have a small fan upstairs beside the bed to keep you extra cool while you sleep.
► Our apartment library includes lots of fiction titles, as well as books on themes as varied as design and farming —at least 70% of which are in English. We also own several Rio guides.
► We leave our two beloved bicycles here, and you are welcome to use them.
► There are two laundromats on our street, one of them just two buildings away.
PEACE OF MIND
Our apartment will be 100% yours during your stay.
It's on the ground floor of an apartment building, so there will be a doorman on duty 24 hours per day to let you in and out of the building, even if you come back home drunk at 4:53 in the morning. It's the only way to enter the building, meaning our apartment stays super safe.
The building is on a quiet street between the two principal streets in Lapa, Mem de Sá and Riachuelo, close to everything, but away from the drunk people, loud music and piss on the streets that is inevitable on the weekends.
24-HOUR MORAL SUPPORT
We'll be in touch by email to offer you advice on places to visit, and tips on the best shows, gigs, or blocos happening in the city. We can also recommend alternative things to do instead of the usual tourist stuff. Want to know the secret trail to the least crowded waterfall in the city? We can sort you out!
We also made a special guide for our guests with basic information about the apartment and the surroundings. Its a compilation of all our knowledge of living in Lapa for the past 3 years. In there, you'll find all the info about the essentials - banks, supermarkets, transport, etc, as well as our favorite bars and restaurants.
We usually stay nearby, so if you have any problems or something stops working, we can come over right away and sort it out for you.
RIO'S OTHER POSTCARD
These days, more and more people are opting for Lapa to be closer to the real Rio and to avoid the extortionate prices of Zona Sul.
Lapa is home to samba musicians, capoeira players, and other marginals and bohemians and has been referred to as the "South American Montmartre". It still carries the soul of Rio in streets filled with music and the most interesting characters.
Because of its location between the historical center of Rio, the bustling downtown, and the hills of Santa Teresa, it has always has a mix of people from all walks of life. Corporate office workers come here to drink during the week, while on the weekends it is taken over by all sorts of people looking for fun (from sambistas to rockers to playboys to funkeiros). And of course, there are the traditional families that live here and make up the bulk of the population on any normal day.
Lapa is a small neighborhood so everything can be done on foot. Our place is a short walk from both the well-known bars and music venues, such as Rio Scenarium, Carioca da Gema, Democráticos, and Circo Voador, and from 19th-century beauties such as the Municipal Theater and the National Library. The Sambadrome is a mere 10 minutes away (handy for those staying during Carnival), and if you don't mind climbing hills, you can be in the centre of Santa Teresa eating a feijoada in less than 15 minutes.
BUS AND METRO
You can get a bus to almost anywhere in the city from within 2 minutes walk of the front door.
You can reach:
► Copacabana in 20 mins
► Ipanema in 30 mins
► Maracanã or the bus station in 15 mins
► Santa Teresa or Centro in less than 10 mins
► Christ the Redeemer Train Station in 15 mins
Our guide will tell you exactly which buses to take to get where you need to go.
The nearest Metro (Cinelândia) is a 15-minute walk away, and from there, you can easily get to the Ipanema and the other beaches in 20 minutes.
P.S. We have two bicycles available, too!
Come stay where the locals live, in a studio that's lived in.
► If you're coming to Rio for a longer period, we can offer you a cheaper rate. Ask us for details!
► Combine your stay in Lapa with a visit to our beach house and we'll make you an awesome discount.: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/850990.

Our stay in the appartement of Marcelle and Davog was wonderfull ! After a day working (two photographers visiting Rio) it was great to come back to the secure and airconditioned cosy appartement in Lapa. This part of town (lapa) is very vibrant with a good atmosphere. Lot of bars and restaurants around the corner. Marcelle and Davog were a good guide with tips. Sending emails with travel tips during our stay.Super internet connection too! Thanks Marcelle and Davog! Robin and Marco
Marcelle's Studio is the perfect little place to experience Rio! It is just as it seems in the pictures, comfortable and lovely decorated. Loads of busses are reachable within 2 minutes so that you can get everywhere you need to. The internet is fast and reliable and the shower has the perfect temperature to wash up after a hot day in Rio :) If I go back to Rio I will definitely choose Marcelle's place again!
We had a great experience staying in their cosy loft!
We had a great stay in this extremely charming studio apartment! The studio is exactly as advertised, its clean and very comfortable. Marcelle and Davog were excellent hosts, and offered great tips for activites throughout our stay. Highly recommended!
I had the opportunity to stay 8 nights at Marcelle & Davog’s apartment, and the purpose of my trip was to study.
My experience was excellent. Lapa is a very interesting part of the city and close to the city center.
The apartment is "like" is announced, has the basic and necessary amenities. The best ... the immense help of Marcelle, assisted me in all my doubts and was always attentive to any need or problem I might have. She was a sweetheart (guardian angel). If I need to go back to Rio would not hesitate to return to Marcelle & Davog’s apartment and .... I recommend it 100%.
Thanks for all.
Great and super cute appartment as a good starting point to explore Rio! Lapa is a great neighbourhood where you can go out at night and theres always something happening! :)
The appartment is about 15 min walk to the nearest metro station! but we learned during our stay that you do not really need the metro as the buses really do stop right outside the door! they take you everywhere and you can see the city while you travel!
We personally did not use the kitchen much but from what we did use everything was avaiable! The bed is very comfortable and so is the futon!
Marcelle was super helpful and so nice in assisting us with any questions we had! she even offered us to use their bikes, made sure we were always ok and made recommendations for what we could do! thank you so much for that!
All in all a perfect airbnb experience with an appartment with a personal touch that met all our expectations! :)
General recommendations to rio: we did the free walking tour that was very nice and starts withhin walking distance of the appartment and we also really enjoyed the hike to the Christ which start at the Parque Lage!! its an adventorous hike but definanlty worth every drop of sweat ;)
Although me and my bf were really excited about being in Marcelle & Davong's place, our experience there wasn't pleasant..
First of all, after confirmed with them if the place was free and we're told yes, we' ve made an reservation and it was just canceled, without any explanation. Still, we managed to book it for the week after that.
They haven't replied to us shortly (sometimes, it took a few days to get an answer back), the place, although it seemed cozy and sweet (decoration is amazing) is really dirty!! Like cutlery with blood in it, a lot of dust that hasn't been clean off ever in some spots (including the bed), the cough smells bad and we also found some rotten spices there, which was supposed for the guests to use. The place is located on the first floor, so you hear noise all the time, coming from the street and also from the interior area of the building. The area around the building is also really dirty and dangerous. Lot's of homeless people around. It starts to be nicer around 5 blocks closer to the Arcos da Lapa.
Subway is not close, but you can find a lot of buses that can take you everywhere. A nice thing about the apartment is that you'll find everything you need there - although a radio or tv would be nice to have.
Next time in Rio, different location.
This guest made no effort to contact us about any of these problems during or after her stay, as we would have been happy to fix them, or refund her. So we were very shocked to receive this spiteful review. Concerning the complaints she made:
- The first reservation was declined as she had told us she was travelling with her boyfriend, but only made a reservation for one person. We asked her to change this and make another reservation.
- We were both travelling during this period in an area with no internet access so our responses were slow. There was nothing we could do about that.
- Cutlery with blood on it is a serious accusation, and if there was blood or any type of substance on our cutlery she should have informed us immediately and we would have done something about the situation. However, we received no information from her until receiving this awful review. Obviously we (or our previous guests) dont go around stabbing ourselves, so I doubt that there was blood on the cutlery at all. If there was something on the cutlery, it could have been sauce, rust, or any combination of red substances, but to automatically label it as blood (without proof or even notifying us first) is sensationalist.
- There was a building demolished nearby recently, so that has caused some problems with dust. We always clean the apartment thoroughly before each guest, but sometimes we miss a shelf with dust for example and for that we apologize unreservedly. However, to describe our apartment as "really dirty" is again a bit over the top.
- Our apartment is on the ground floor of a apartment building, in a major city, very close to downtown. We dont advertise our place as a secluded zen retreat, but you do not "hear noise all the time" as she described it. It is much quieter than the majority of Lapa, and if she did stay "5 blocks closer to the Arcos" where it is "nicer" she would be complaining about it being too noisy there aswell.
- I checked all the spices today (we have around 15 or so little spice bottles) and found that one of them was indeed bad - paprika. Its one that we dont use often, so we forgot to check if it was still good. We apologize for this, but doubt that a old bottle of paprika has the potential to make someones stay unpleasant.
- To say that the area around the building is "dirty and dangerous" is her personal opinion but one we 100% disagree with. We have lived here for 2 years without a single problem, and have had over 40 people stay in our place without trouble.
- It is true that Rio can be a messy city, and there are alot of homeless people on the streets, but the vast majority are not dangerous. The area closer to the Lapa arches is just as "filthy" - with the added bonus of having 1000s of drunk people, loud music, and piss on the pavement on the weekends, so I think our little street is paradise in comparison. There are a few homeless people who stay on our street, but almost every street in Lapa has a homeless person sleeping in it. Rio is a very unequal city, but thats no reason to complain about us or our apartment
- The guest had already been to Rio before and knows the city. So if she wanted a nice clean area with no homeless people, no noise... and a TV, she should have booked herself a place in a hotel in Leblon, but even there she would encounter homeless people. We do not mislead with our ad, and the general area of our apartment is available on the site. A little bit of research before and she could have discovered if the streets were up to her standard.
All was as advertised, cozy little place ! All good (=
We had a nice week in Lapa. We think it is much better to have the appartament in Lapa than in Santa Teresa as it is closer to the rest of the nices places to visit, well communicated and, over all, because it is the place to go at night. The atmosphere of the neighborhood at night is very nice with lots of people having fun and direct music, dance, etc...It is great to have the oppoprtunity to dance forro or, at least, to see how good they are!!!
Marcelle, the hostess is very nice and she contacted us every evening by mail to suggest alternatives to go out. Without these comments it would have been much more difficult to find nice places as it is not easy to find the right places to go...
On the other hand, the neighborhood is "the old part" and it is not as clean as Ipanema or Leblon, so you can see rubbish in the street and poor people but it is much more authentic. If you are not interested at all in night life, Ipanema might be also a nice option to stay but the atmosphere there is more "international".
Regarding the appartment, it is as it looks like in the photograhs. The building is nice, you have a guard 24 hours a day and the appartment is in the ground floor with a big window protected with a grille and a small but nice bathroom and kitchen perfect to prepare basic meals. The bed was comfortable (it is localted in an structure above the futon).
The street in which is located starts in the Lapa area where the bars and music are but it is a long street and the appartment is located at the end, so the area is quiet...
Inside the appartment there is a guide of the neighborhood with suggestions of places to buy, eat, drink, etc.
Furthermore, we found difficult to find ATM that accepted international credit cards so we suggest you to change
