What makes my house unique is its character. You will have seen the fireplace from the photos. The panels over it and on the whole front wall of the living-room are of tolled leather and came from Niger (Africa) where the former owner worked.

You have access to the whole house, including the terrace and a small seating space at the front, useful when the sun is too hot for the terrace.

I will not be there when you are but my neighbours are friendly. they are French-speaking for the most part but you will find lots of English speakers living in the village.

The village of Montolieu is reputedly the prettiest in the Aude Département. It has a medieval feel with very narrow streets and some really old houses. My terrace has a view of the tower of St. André's Church which dates from the fourteenth century. Montolieu ia a book village and has a bookshop everywhere you look. It will supply your needs in basic groceries, (at Vital, run by Nelly), bread (very good boulangerie) and reading matter (local newsagents). There are a number of restaurants. My favourite is "Les Anges au Plafond".

Montolieu is an excellent base for visiting the Cathar castles and tracing the history of that troubled period in the Languedoc. Fanjeaux, where the Dominican order was founded, is not far away. It is situated in the Cabardes wine-growing area. Look forward to excellent wines and to visiting the local vineyards of Chateau de Pennautier and Chateau Auzias.

September and October are particularly beautiful months in Montolieu....I would be there myself if I didn't have to work!

I advise you to rent a car while you are here. My house is 20 minutes' drive from Carcassonne airport. You will take the green Toulouse signs and travel through Pézens and Moussoulens to Montolieu. The railway station at Carcassonne connects you to the rest of France. If you want to get to the sea, the beaches of Narbonne are about an hour away. If you want to bright lights, Toulouse is an hour by car. (I go by train because Toulouse is a very busy city.) Montpellier is 1.5 hour s by train; Perpignan is 2 hours. At weekends in high season you can get a direct train to the beautiful seaside resort of Collioure......two hours of magnificent scenery......you may see some pink flamingoes aroud Port Nouvelle.

I damaged the kitchen sink, which is ceramic. I'm to get it mended in September. For the moment, let water down the small sink at the right......or empty the basin down the right side of the terrace! There is a septic tank. Each week flush a packet of Eparcyl or similar product (supplied in bathroom) down the toilet to keep the septic tank happy. I have never had any trouble with it.

I expect guests to respect my property......They always do! I leave my house exactly as it is when I live in it myself. There are no locked cupboards! I do, however, create some wardrobe space before I leave. The terrace and the street in front of the house could be dangerous for small children. I do not allow smoking in the house. I would rather not accommodate pets.....though I am a cat lover!
