As others have commented, the home is lovely, very clean, with plenty to look at. Jane was always responsive and helpful. Breakfast was very good. the only detractor was the lack of any place to sit or relax. Jane actually lives there, so we didn't have access to her living area…

Well Lyle, other guests have used the garden to relax in and had supper there of an evening, but you had inclement weather and spent your only evening indoors when once again all other guests go out and enjoy themselves. In the larger room with a sofa was a gentleman of advanced years who had booked in for six days and therefore prevented you from instantly booking the room he already occupied. You breakfasted at the same table so you knew who was in this room and why you could not use it as a 'den'. You spoke to this guest. Should I have turfed this gentleman out for your sake because you could not enjoy an evening in Exeter? I at no point in my description of my guest accommodation state there is a 'den' to hang out in because all other guests require a nice clean room to sleep in and a good breakfast. I permitted you to use my fridge for your convenience and use my house phone, neither of which did I in the least mind sharing. Thankfully I perceived your wife and sons to possess more personal charm than yourself. You were not paying to rent the house and all its facilities simply two well equipped bedrooms plus the largest bathroom. That is the nature of 'bed and breakfast'. You had not intended to be here but had an enforced overnight stay due to a French strike and I did my utmost to please you, which significantly failed and I had also mentioned this failure on my part to your wife.
I don't think that Jane is the warmest of hostesses but this might have been due to the stress caused by the snow. Rooms clean and comfortable.

It made me sad to read Anne's review as during this weekend in February of deep snow it was hard to manage to obtain eggs for the four guests as the supermarket shelves were bare. I specially offered this to Anne to make her happy as eggs are not always requested. I had fractured my right foot and had difficulty walking and the snow clearing was such a hard task for Anne's group even to come up the front path of my house. Anne had invited her son who was at Exeter University to join her family for their cooked breakfast which I made for everyone for which there was no extra charge!! I had been impressed by the closeness of Anne's family and their courage in setting out from London in such uncertain weather to see their son at university, so my perception of their stay was a different one from Anne's. How disappointing at the very least she judged me as not 'the warmest of hostesses' when efforts had surely been attempted to please her.
Jane was a very friendly and helpful host and her house is interesting, beautiful and very clean. We enjoyed looking at her amazing works of art! Breakfast was very good and much appreciated, especially the provision of non-dairy milk for my daughter, even though I had forgott…
I'm an artist working with paper and textiles. I'm a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and have a working studio at the bottom of my garden. I love long distance walking, architecture, art, cinema, yoga and reading contemporary novels. Mine is an interesting house to stay in…
