Lo spazio
It is a charming, often sun-drenched, comfortable room and bath located on the ground floor front of a house in the heart of Point Arena, one of California's tiniest incorporated cities. Located only 25 feet from Hwy. 1 (Main Street), the house and room are nonetheless very private, shielded by a cedar tree right in front of the Angelwing's east-facing picture window.
Hwy. 1, which runs along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, is not only gorgeous, but civilized: traffic drops to nearly nothing after dark and this location is quiet at night. In the morning, though, you will hear traffic as the town wakes up.
The Angelwing Room is convenient because nearly every amenity that PA has to offer is accessible on foot. You can drift out the front door and within minutes, get the best chocolate croissant from here to SF and a dark french roast, enjoy the hushed interior of a historic theater, have a nice glass of wine in a sophisticated atmosphere (at 215 Main, on the east side of the street) or - after a 3/4-mile walk to our cove - sit mesmerized by the ebb and flow of the immense Pacific Ocean.
The house is Lauren's art studio and business headquarters, so either she or her son Adrian or ex-husband Lu will be available to give you directions, help, and advice. Lauren is the former Mayor of Point Arena and knows where you might want to go, what you might like to see, hear and do. Local beaches and ocean access points may interest you, or you may just want to get away. The Angelwing Room, in the heart of Point Arena, is a very good place to be far from the rest of the world; because of coastal fog, it can be like a modest, modern Avalon.
The house itself is an old redwood structure dating from around 1900, remodeled in the sixties. It is funky, but full of creativity and (we hope) charm! We strive to keep the room spotlessly clean and the hall area neat; at the same time, it is an old house with some original decorative features. It has been home to Lauren and her (now grown) sons and many sleep-overs, gatherings of friends, political events, and late night working since she came to California in a school bus in 1999. She and her sons lived a year in that bus in the redwoods, then bought this magical place in 2000. It is very lived in, but the guest room is the most modernized part.
A note about climate: the northern California coast is very cool and often damp. Bring warm clothes no matter what the season!

Accesso per gli ospiti
*The room with its own bathroom.
*The front hall of the house with your dedicated zone of amenities (mini fridge, microwave, coffee-maker, games, toys for kids).
*The entire outside front "living room" including Adirondack chairs under the angels, sheltered by a hedge at your back.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
Although best suited to individuals and couples, the space could accommodate a parent or couple and small child. There is just one (queen) bed.
Remember, the coast is very cool, no matter how hot it may be even a few miles inland! Bring flexible clothing.
If you need an iron and ironing board, please ask.
ALSO please know that a number of businesses here only accept cash or checks, so plan ahead. If you're stuck, there is a Redwood Credit Union in town with an ATM.

Point Arena, California, Stati Uniti

TINY CITY
The neighborhood is unique in being an incorporated city, but so very small! It is one of California's five smallest cities. By necessity it is close-knit, if not always harmonious. Point Arena is old-fashioned in its lack of sprawl, yet almost everything you need is here, within one square mile!
YOU ARE RIGHT ON HWY. 1
This is great, and even mostly quiet after dinner time, because of our remote location. Be aware though that people start getting to work around 6 to 8am, and you will hear this traffic.
THE PACIFIC PLATE
The notorious San Andreas Fault runs along the California coast, much of it off shore. But here, the fault carves a tiny chunk of land out of the Continental Plate and takes us into the huge Pacific Plate. The Fault goes out to sea 3 miles north of Point Arena, in the Stornetta Flats and again about 35 miles to the south. So Point Arena and the Angelwing Room are on the tectonic plate traveling slowly north while most of the rest of North America is heading south. It feels like a separate world out here, and geographically it is. Come experience it for yourself!
COOL OCEAN AIR
Please note also that the coast has much more moderate weather than even a few miles inland. When you are roasting in the summer, visit here - it will be 20 degrees cooler! When you are freezing in the winter, here it will be more mellow, cool, moist weather perfect for your skin.

I'm a painter, seamstress, graphic designer and art historian, whose coastal residence in downtown Point Arena - one of California's tiniest incorporated cities, located on breathtaking Hwy. 1 - is home, studio, and gallery all in one. The house is made from century-old redwood and the best part of its 1950's remodel are large picture windows. My decorative scheme is the same as that of manors and palaces everywhere: put art in every available space. I grew up in Wisconsin, then lived as an exchange student in beautiful Belgium, followed by many years at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Now, after traveling cross country with my kids in a converted school bus, I proudly call California my home. Here, my other vocation was politics, being a former Mayor of Point Arena, and having been involved through my ex, Dan Hamburg, who was a member of congress during the Clinton years and recently served on Mendocino County's Board of Supervisors. I love painting, sewing, and designing; cooking nutritious dishes, picking edible plants in my yard, and living close to nature. I love intellectual pursuits and being an informed citizen with paid subscriptions to many of our top news sources. I depend on the New Yorker magazine for enlivening my magical coffee hour, and believe that ignorance of history is like walking backwards into the future with your eyes shut. The periods that intrigue me are many, but especially the Italian Renaissance, ancient Minoan Crete and the Paleolithic era. You will see echoes of the past in my own paintings, accessible on the walls of the house and through my business Artgoddess. The Angelwing room is filled with paintings and prints hung in that Downton Abbey style -- multiple pictures to a wall. I seriously would not want to live without books, a good French roast, my fabulous sons, biking, and champagne. Not to mention blackberries, apples, and stinging nettles, all of which I harvest. My taste in music ranges from the jazz greats to popular artists of the '40s through '60s, and then what I listened to in college during the '80s and later. I LOVE dancing to swing and fast old rock n' roll, like say, Chuck Berry (RIP). I enjoy traveling in our county and beyond, especially visiting our city, San Francisco, and visiting family in other parts of America. I have had formative experiences abroad in Belgium, France, Italy, Tibet, and would love to go back to any of these and new destinations. As a host, I want to give our guests a homey place to stay that has local flavor and provides a unique experience. My son Adrian lives close by and we can share a lot with visitors about what is cool to see, do, taste, and try. If any guest gets bored with our tiny city and its 5-star bakery, historic theater, and pounding Pacific Ocean, I have a serious personal library from which to lend reading material.

Durante il tuo soggiorno
I like to welcome my guests in person whenever possible, but there's a self-check in process if needed. I'm always available to answer questions. It is helpful to communicate about departure time, as well as arrival. I'm super flexible, but sometimes need to plan.
Texting directly my cell is perhaps the best way to reach me, even when we are all there at the same house, since the front is quite separate from the rest.
If desired, I can offer guests very good advice about driving routes and what they might want to do here. Not everything is available all the time, so if you choose to outline your objectives and timing, I can let you know what's going on.
I wish to give guests all the privacy they desire and to enjoy their experience as they see fit; at the same time, I have really enjoyed visiting and occasionally dining with guests when it works out.
