Descrizione

If your perception of Iceland is beautiful wild nature in different colors, deep and mysterious lakes and wild Icelandic horses running side by side passing hoards of sheep, you are not far away from the experience that a stay in this beautiful timber house will give you.

Located on the outskirts of Reykjavik beside Lake Elidavatn the house has a great location for those who are on a self-drive holiday and wish to experience the city of Reykjavik and surrounding countryside. It is also close to the main road to the Golden Circle and beyond.

The house has 2 double rooms and one single room with closet space in all three rooms perfect for a large family or a group of friends travelling together. The social point in the house is the large conservatory and patio area where you can relax in the evening.

All amenities are close by including swimming pool, supermarket and gym. A proud Icelandic tradition is to visit the local public bath and go to the hot pot where you will meet all generations.

There is a horse stall connected to the house and horse riding can be arranged from January to June.

Thora's house is really special, such as the decoration as the same of the pictures. There are so many things in the house, we like it very much. It was snowed heavily during our stay, the door of the little house was open by the wind when we left. So there were many snow got in the house and made some damage, I'm so sorry for that and I will offer the cost.

This was such a perfect place to stay on our 5 day trip! It was super cold so we were relieved to come home to a warm cozy environment. When we wanted to get into the city it only took us 15 minutes and that was in the snow. We even could see the horses!

BEWARE! The description when I booked said that I would have the whole house. In fact, that is not at all the case. I stayed in a back house and then had access to the main house by walking outside through a courtyard. Apparently, when you rent a three bedroom house, you will only get 2 bedrooms in the backhouse. The third bedroom is in the main house, but locked up as it belongs to the host. She told me she only opens that room for guests of 4+ - she told me that after I had checked in. Also, though Iceland runs off geothermal power, I was reprimanded for leaving a few lights on half way through my stay (Yes, the host arrived without my knowing to the house which is a complete breach of privacy in my book). She told me electricity was expensive. I had no idea that a country that runs off geothermal power would be so expensive in utilities. Perhaps that should be in the house rules. Overall, the host "sells" the house with beautiful pictures and a basic description on the listing. What you don't realize is you'll stay in a back house, a nosy host that may show up announced, and a bunch of rules that you won't know about until you've broken them.

I very much enjoyed my stay with Thora. The house was located a comfortable distance from the city with excellent views of the surrounding lake and picturesque area around the property. Thora attended to me like family, ensuring I had access to local area maps, amazing restaurants, and sites to see even offering her time to accompany me. I travel for work frequently and this is my first experience with host who was so gracious. The accommodations were tidy and as described. I very much appreciated having my own space to retreat too and the glass room made for an excellent quiet space. I can't say enough about Thora or the home. I will definitely be seeing her again.

This was a challenging property for our group, which included two couples. One note for this property is that there are two separate buildings. The main house includes the living, kitchen, and dining areas, one bedroom, and a large bathroom. There is a separate house in the rear of the property that includes two bedrooms and bathroom. We chose this house because of the two bathrooms (one for each couple). The bathroom in the separate building with the two bedrooms was not clean, so we all used the larger bathroom in the main house. However, the lack of privacy was a concern; there are large windows in the bathroom with no window coverings and they face the separate building with the bedrooms. We fashioned a curtain out of dish towels to cover the long window in the shower and tried to be discreet when dressing. We also believe that this house is the host’s primary residence. The host made very little effort to clean up her things around the house. Almost every surface in the bathroom has toiletries or knick knacks. It would have been difficult to use the kitchen as every counter was crowded and the refrigerator was full. During our time at the house we moved some things on the coffee table or the dining table to make room for our things. We suspected that someone was coming into the house while we were out to rearrange what had been moved, and some of our things (jackets, clothing) were moved. Fortunately, nothing was ever missing, but we didn’t leave any valuables in the house. The worst thing that happened was on our last night in the house. We were sitting in the living room around 10 PM when my husband noticed a face in the window. When he made eye contact with the host, she came to the front door, entered the house, and asked our plans for leaving the next day. She informed us that she had an international flight and wanted to stay at the house that night with her adult son. We were quite caught off guard (we had rented the entire house with no expectation that anyone else would stay there). Even if we said no, the host has a key to the house, so we would still feel uncomfortable staying there. The host had my cell number and was able to text me at other times during the week, and I believe it was intentional that she waited until a late hour on our last night there to show up and ask to stay. She may have hoped we would be asleep in the separate bedroom area and wouldn’t be aware that she had come in. We ended up leaving around 10:30 PM and going to a hotel. I requested a reimbursement to cover the costs of the hotel, but received no response from the host. I have elevated the problem to Airbnb.

If you want to stay close to Reykjavik yet be in a private countryside environment then this is a perfect place. The views, especially from the sun room, are beautiful - the mountains and the lake - and the house is nicely decorated with many interesting collectables. Thora is a very generous and laid-back host!

My name is Thora and I am a makeup artist and the manager of Icelandic Glacial Water. I am a real horse girl and have Icelandic horses that I take to competitions, fairs etc. If you are interested in horse riding a trip can be arranged but only from January to June where the horses are inside.

Besides that I travel a lot both with the job and in my sparetime. I look forward to hear from you.
