Smiley’s Schooner Saloon est 1851 is one of the oldest bar in the West. If you need a place to rest your head in Bolinas, our inn has 6 private rooms, each with a full bath, organic linens, comfy eco-friendly mattresses and a couple free drinks.

Smiley’s Schooner Saloon was established in 1851 and has been in continual operation in the same stalwart and storied building since - and we've yet to find an older bar west of the Mississippi.

The saloon is believed to have been built for the energetic young Captain Isaac Morgan who arrived in Bolinas (or Jugville as it was known then) in 1849. Those were gold rush days, days of growth; when one gambled with one’s dreams and then watched them either shatter and splinter or be crafted and honed into realities.

Smiley’s is known among musicians for gigs that come with free beds and a spirited crowd and to music fans as a place to catch artists like the Sam Chase and California Honeydrops. Check out our social media and website for our music calendar.

So now you’ll need a place to rest your head; in an outbuilding behind the bar, you’ll find Smiley’s Sleeping Quarters: 6 private rooms with brand new organic linens and mattresses. Room 6 has one queen bed.

While we still have a long way to go, we’re happy to report that our rooms are no longer “a warren of stale-smelling rooms hastily constructed behind the town’s only bar" as the New York Times called them in their quirky June 2014 article about Bolinas.

Our bartenders are on site until (at least) midnight to check you in, give you your keys and answer any questions. Please note that we don’t have a reception desk or concierge right now; once you have your keys you are on your own to come and go as you please.

Guests are encouraged to mingle with other guests, locals and visitors in the Saloon.

Ashley, one of the owners, lives just down the road and is available in case of emergency - or for a friendly chat over a glass of coffee or wine.

Surrounded by protected parks and ocean, the tiny town of Bolinas provides a wild, peaceful escape from the bustle of San Francisco just 25 miles away.

Be sure to read up on the history of Bolinas and the many articles written about what do to in and around west Marin: oysters at Marshall Store, horseback riding at Five Brooks Ranch, bird watching at the Observatory, rope swing at Bass Lake, mountain and road bike trails, surf spots, crabbing, tidepooling, fishing, farming and way more. Every day here is a blessing

Most people drive to Bolinas...and the town is notoriously without signage, but there is public transportation to Bolinas from "over the hill" via the Marin Stagecoach.

Parking can be tough on weekends, but hotel guests enjoy reserved spots in our private lot. Bikes are recommended.

*Please note that live music often results in some excess noise (and fun) later into the evening.* At this time, Smiley's rooms aren't suitable for children or for folks in need of total peace and quiet.

Smileys definitely gives you a relaxing little getaway. Great location literally across the street from the restaurant and the grocery store. No more than a 5 minute walk to the beach and a quick drive to Alamere Falls hiking trail. Just realize if you need wifi, it does not reach to your room at all. The only place with wifi is the office which can sometimes be an inconvenience.

We had a great time @ Smiley's!! The room was comfortable, having access to the community kitchen was awesome, and everyone we met in town and at the bar was super friendly.... all-in-all, it was a great end to our extended camping road trip. Bolinas charmed the socks off us, our dog loved it too! Some people mentioned that the bar gets loud... in the 2 nights we were there, we couldn't hear a peep from our room (#6).

it was great to stay at Smiley's. the room is very nice and there is a shared kitchen with all the facilities that everyone can use. The location in great and the stuff are really nice. the only thing though is that there is no Wifi in the rooms, it is a known issue and I read about it upfront in the description about Smiley's here in Air BnB. So I went to the kitchen every time I required Wifi.

Cute old-school rooms, quiet (you don't hear the bar in room 6). Attached to little local bar - the later the hour the friendlier are the locals haha. Kitchen was clean when we arrived, but a bit dirty in the morning since probably other guests did not clean after themselves (would be great if everyone would've followed that simple and respectful rule). WIFI worked sometimes in the rooms (as described) and good in the kitchen and bar.

On top of it being a perfect place to stay, the personality of Smiley's (and the entire town in general) is warm, fun, and welcoming. I felt like I was staying with old friends.

This place would be fantastic if you just want to get away from it all, it's in a super cute little town with no cell Phone reception or TVs, which is all described in their listing. My concern though was that the bar (which didn't bother us from our room at all) the bar was the reason we had rented the room so we could sit in a dog friendly environment as described and have a few drinks, but it was SO loud (I worked bars for 7 years this was ridiculously loud I'm not just being pedantic) despite their only being 7 people in there on a Monday night that conversation was impossible, and to attempt to bring our dogs would have been outright unreasonable for them. So we grabbed a few drinks to head back to our room and chill out with some Spotify or Netflix with use of the wifi as described in their listing. Nope, that was only available at or super close to the bar, not from our room. As an owner of multiple businesses I unfortunately need to be contactable at all times, and despite it being listed as such it unfortunately wasn't the case. I would have given this place a full five stars had the bar been usable for people with dogs as described, or their been wifi as listed in the rooms. I would suggest putting in some wifi boosters, and perhaps altering the description of the bar, or getting a dj that can read a crowd better as no one was dancing at 9.30 on a Monday night.

Risposta di Smileys:
Hi Elizabeth, thanks so much for your feedback. We'll definitely work on the Monday night noise problems. Wifi is TOUGH in Bolinas as we only have DSL and not much bandwidth (6 mbps) Our priority bandwidth goes to our cash registers and office operations, with sadly not much left for guests. We've asked AT&T for another router, but they've stopped adding new service to Bolinas. You can read more here: I encourage everyone to contact Marin County and ask that our rural areas get broadband coverage! Many thanks.

Smiley's Saloon is very likely the oldest saloon west of the Mississippi!
Just west of the infamous San Andreas fault, clinging to the edge of the North American continent, is the little township of Bolinas. The well-hidden community is home to an enclave of artists, writers, musicians, farmers, fishermen and other colorful characters. Nestled at the heart of this unique community is Smiley’s Schooner Saloon, in continual operation in the same stalwart and storied building since 1851.
