Lady Grey Cottage is a beautiful old heritage home in the quaint village of McGregor. Built in 1865 this gem of a home offers accommodation for up to 4 people (plus 1 extra child on a couch).
Ideal for families, couples and artists.

The heritage cottage consists of 2 bedrooms, one with a queen sized bed, and the other with two single beds. It has a sitting area (lounge and dining room) with a lovely big fireplace, a kitchen inclusive of an original Dover Stove for those chilly winter days and nights, and a bathroom with shower. The kitchen leads out on to a beautiful patio area with a table that seats 12 as well as a braai area. The front door opens out on to a large fynbos garden with loads of space to play, chat, relax, read...whatever takes your fancy.

We offer guests the privacy they require.

Marlene, who manages the cottage, lives in a flat on the premises. If there is anything you need, please feel free to contact her at any time during your stay.

McGregor is a small village in the mountains of the Western Cape, South Africa. It is roughly 150 km east of Cape Town, located in the Breede River Winelands. The village has become somewhat of a magnet for alternative lifestyles. It is home to a dynamic community of artists, poets and musicians with a number of galleries to boot. Both eccentric and therapeutic, it provides a place to unwind, step back in time and relax. There are a number of restaurants to choose from to suite every pocket but no fast food outlets.

The village is small enough to navigate on foot. If you want to experience the neighbouring wine farms, donkey sanctuary, and any other attractions in the Langeberg region, it would be wise to have a car.

Please note that all grey water empties into the garden. This may sometimes affect the flow of water out of the shower. Please let Marlene, our manager, know if this is the case, and she will do her best to rectify the situation.
The fireplace in the lounge needs to be 'handled' with utmost care. Because of the thatched roof, we have a sieve in the chimney that catches any stray sparks. The grid needs to be pushed right up against the back wall so as to prevent smoke from entering the house. When first lighting the fire, a bit of smoke may come in to the house, but this will soon sort itself out. If the wind is blowing strongly, it may also affect the directionality of the smoke. If this is the case, you may need to use the Dover stove in the kitchen until the wind subsides. Unfortunately there is not much we can do about the wind causing the smoke to blow into the house! We also ask you please to make sure that all fires are completely extinguished before you go to bed.
All of the beds have electric blankets on them for chilly winter nights. It is advisable to switch the blanket/s on at least an hour before you go to bed. If you would prefer not to use the electric blankets, we have some 'heavy duty' blankets stored in the cupboards. Please ask Marlene to take these out for you.

Regole della casa

There is no smoking inside the house. We would appreciate guests taking care of our heritage gem by treating it as a home away from home. Guest are able to access wifi at a cost of R24 for 2gigs of data. The wifi is capped and connected to The Mothertongue Project, the NPO that is associated with the property.

The cottage is beautifully decorated, art from all over the world is on the walls and shelves. The space embraces you with its comfortable way. The kitchen holds anything you need to prepare a meal. We slept deep and long on comfortable matrasses. The bathroom is simple but workable. We had a lovely vegan and vegetarian meal at Temenos in walking distance.

The cottage is charming and very well-equipped - the smell from the thatch is amazing! Some of the comments about the shower are inaccurate - the water pressure is absolutely fine, but the temperature varies wildly and we were constantly hopping in and out as it changed from freezing cold to piping hot. Communication with the host was first-rate and I'd recommend the property to anyone, but with the only caveats being that all of the coffee shops and restaurants are a 5 minute walk away and as the property is on the edge of town, it can get a bit noisy at night.

This was a gorgeous, historic house in a lovely little town full of artists and friendly folks. The only thing missing from the description was the ceiling height. For most this won't be an issue (and the ceilings are gorgeous and historical), but if you're taller than 6 foot you might hit some of the beams! The doors are even shorter, but its not a big deal to duck ;-) Beds were very comfortable and the outside space was a little haven, complete with hammock. We very much enjoyed our night here and would have loved to have stayed longer!

This is a beautiful cosy cottage, ideal for a relaxing weekend away. The cottage is well-equipped with everything you could possibly need. Wood was provided so we could make a nice fire each night and the stoep at the back - complete with a hammock - makes for great evening socialising. Mcgregor is a small town so everything is within walking distance.

I'm from Cape Town, South Africa. and lecture in the Drama Department at the University of Cape Town. I am a theatre-maker, sometimes performer and singer-songwriter (when the mood takes me!).
