Come explore Acadia National Park and one of the most beautiful islands in Maine. This one bedroom apartment is on the first floor of a fully renovated 150 year old barn. We are conveniently located in the historic town of Somesville, at the very center of Mount Desert Island. We are a 10 to 15 minute drive from Bar Harbor and a 10 minute drive to Southwest Harbor on the other side of the island. You can walk to the Somesville library, a small history museum, Somes harbor landing and Hillside Cemetery, the burial place of poet Marguerite Yourcenar. The apartment has its own entrance and parking. A Queen bed in the separate bedroom and a twin daybed with a trundle in the living area can sleep up to 4 guests - perfect for a small family, a couple or a few friends. The kitchen area has all you need to cook your own meals on your trip as well as a washer and dryer. The bathroom off the bedroom has a shower. A small, sunny outdoor space is a comfortable spot to sit in the sun or have a meal. We do not have a TV, but you can use our Wifi at no charge. The free Island Explorer bus can stop right in front of the house and take you to many locations in the National Park and around the island. We are located on a busy main street with a 25mph speed limit which has some traffic noise during the day but is generally quite quiet at night. We love our home and we hope that this space can be a comfortable retreat from which to explore everything Acadia and Mount Desert Island has to offer.
Amazing place. Perfect for a romantic get away.
Emily was the perfect host - she met us on arrival, and helped us with queries very responsively during our stay. Although Emily lives in the other half of the barn, it's so well converted that it's essentially two distinct properties, and it was so quiet and private that you wouldn't realise as such, as entrances are separate and it has it's own parking, and we didn't see or hear her or her family.
The place was the perfect size for a couple, and well fitted out, with bathroom, bedroom, large walk in closet and kitchen/dining area, with a really comfy day bed for lounging, and underfloor heating. Felt very homely, just the right size, and was nicely located close to Acadia but in a quieter bit of town.
Decent selection of maps and leaflets provided which was really helpful planning our stay.
Overall thoughts: very cosy, and the perfect hideaway to explore Acadia from.
Food tips - as it was end of season, everything was starting to close down, so we ate out and also cooked 'at home'. Jeannie's Great Maine Breakfast (pancakes/breakfast), Geddy's (pizza) both in Bar Harbour were great and catered well for gluten-free too. Nearby, Sawyer's Market down in SouthWest Harbour was a very nice (but expensive) grocery store with a great wine selection and good for gluten-free. Cheaper Grocery store (HannaFord) in Bar Harbour for essentials. Chow Maine is a wholesale asian food supplier to local stores, but do sell chilled pre-prepared stuff direct for takeout - probably the best Thai/Asian food I've ever had.
Emily and her wonderful space made our stay in Bar Harbor particularly wonderful! The barn is perfect for a couple or small family. It has a everything we could need and is perfectly designed with colorful textiles, a comfortable bed, and a cozy day bed. Emily graciously accommodated us with a pack-n-play for our infant son.
We recommend this rental completely! Emily is a perfect host, ready to help make your visit special and memorable.
We are four friends from Belgium who travelled New England for 3 weeks in September 2013.
Emily's converted barn was exactly what we needed - a very clean and comfortable apartment, fully equipped (we very much welcomed the washing machine and dryer after two weeks of travelling - the presence of laundry gel was a plus too, so we did not have to buy a whole bottle), good beds, well situated (hardly any street noise at night, and not too far from Bar Harbor), lots of light, parking space right in front of the house. It was the perfect starting point for our excursions and I only wish we could have stayed a bit longer.
Communication with Emily was easy and fast. She provided lots of useful tips on places to eat and visit.
We enjoyed our stay on Mount Desert Island very much, and if ever I have the chance, I would love to return to this place.
The converted barn was a great place to begin our Mt. Desert Island adventure. It's quaint and centrally located, no more than 15 minutes to downtown Bar Harbor, cute carriage roads, the dock, or anywhere else you'd like to go on the island.
The house IS located right on a busy street, but I personally didn't find the noise to be too bothersome. The only problem for me was that, since we arrived after dark, it was a little hard to find (especially since the GPS/internet in the area is minimal).
Emily was a great host. She made tons of recommendations of things to do, from scenic bike rides to locals bars. I'd definitely come back!
Fantastic place! I'd highly recommend Emily's place to anyone visiting the Island. She is very responsive, and helpful. I hope to return sometime soon.
what an amazing place!
the house is situated perfectly in the middle of MDI, it's close to both Bar harbor and south west harbor that you can go to either one for dinner easily. it's close to all the hiking, boating and swimming spots.
The noise? what noise... it's situated on a regular road, and it very quite from the evening on.
It's immaculate, easy to get to, kitchen has everything you need, and not cluttered.
We loved it and can't wait to come back.
We enjoyed our stay at Emily's house very much. She stocks the kitchen for tea, coffee, and pancakes, which were very nice touches. She sent an email with recommendations for restaurants, grocery store, and activities. We felt like locals. We also took nice walks to the Somes sound every day. We definitely will return.
So glad we stayed here. Very comfortable pillows everywhere. I especially enjoyed relaxing on the day bed. Emily provides lots of extras in the kitchen like local coffee and tea. Staying here is so much more relaxing than Bar Harbor. Access to Somes sound is a very short walk. Kayaking on Long Pond was the highlight of our trip. Somesville is residential so pick up groceries before arriving or plan on driving to a near by town.
We, my husband and I had a wonderful 6 day stay at the converted barn in Somesville..well located for travelling to Southwest Harbor, Bar Harbor, Mt Desert High School tennis courts, Town Hill and Echo Lake beach. We had a fresh pot of flowers first day and many very helpful staples were placed in the unit i.e. coffee, teac, pancake flour, Maple syrup. The living area was comfortably furnished and included our dining room table. The kitchen had everything we needed, even a petite dishwasher..and plenty of cutting boards.Near the stove was a bulletin board with many helpful flyers on places to visit and places to eat. Plenty of closet space. Bed had two splendid reading lamps. Door in bedroom led out to a tiny garden with wonderful Adirondack chairs to sit in with cup of coffee and paper. Best surprise was Sunday New York Times on our doorstep. Emily and husband and son were very very helpful and remedied any problems very quickly. All is on one floor. There is a fair amount of traffic going by in front of the home, but as soon as businesses close, the street becomes very quiet..through the night. A good parking spot in front of the unit helped a lot. In all, a truly super spot to live for six wonderful days. We were not disappointed in any aspect of our visit!
