Come explore Acadia National Park and one of the most beautiful islands in Maine. This one bedroom apartment is on the first floor of a fully renovated 150 year old barn. We are conveniently located in the historic town of Somesville, at the very center of Mount Desert Island. We are a 10 to 15 minute drive to Bar Harbor and a 10 minute drive to Southwest Harbor on the other side of the island. You can walk to the Somesville library, a small history museum and Somes Harbor landing. The apartment is attached to our house but has its own entrance and parking. A Queen bed in the separate bedroom and a twin daybed with a trundle bed in the living area can sleep up to 4 guests - perfect for a small family, a couple or a few friends. The daybed doubles as the couch during the day. All linens are included. The kitchen area has all you need to cook your own meals on your trip as well as a washer and dryer. The small bathroom off the bedroom has a shower. A small, sunny outdoor space is a comfortable spot to sit in the sun or have a meal. We do not have a TV, but you can use our Wifi at no charge. The free Island Explorer bus can stop right in front of the house and take you to many locations in the National Park and around the island. We are located on a busy main street with a 25mph speed limit which has some traffic noise during the day but is generally quite quiet at night. We love our home and we hope that this space can be a comfortable retreat from which to explore everything Acadia and Mount Desert Island has to offer.
Just a a few house rules we take very seriously - NO animals, NO SMOKING anywhere on the property and quiet after 10pm.
All guests have access to a small, cozy backyard with chairs, and a nice rocky beach, great for picnics, and swimming.
NO SMOKING anywhere on premises, NO pets, quiet after 10 pm.
We were very happy with our stay at Emily and JB's converted barn. The place was very clean and quaint, as well as in a great location! An ample supply of linens, blankets, towels, and soaps were provided for us, as well as a hair dryer, etc. as described. As added bonuses - the kitchen was well-stocked with some oil and a few spices, and there were great books and magazines on the bookshelf for some Maine-related readings. Specifically, the James Kaiser detailed guide to Acadia was extremely informational and helped us learn and discover things about the park we would not have otherwise known.
The only thing I would mention is that the shower in the bathroom is really quite small. It's about the width of a telephone booth, so there is very little arm room. It wasn't an issue but could be worth mentioning. Other than that, we absolutely loved the place and were happy to call this place home sweet home during our time in Acadia.
The host made us feel quite welcome. They left us the necessaries that one would hope to find in walking into use a cottage for the first time (soap, coffee, appliances, dishes, etc). The facility was as it was described it would be.
All-around, we were pleased and feel we got a good value for money we spent.
Everything about this place was terrific for my friend and me. The accommodation is very comfortable, tastefully decorated, very clean, and very well maintained. We availed ourselves of the guidebooks and DownEast magazines that Emily provided - very helpful!
Emily offered terrific suggestions for hikes (our favorite was one that we wouldn't have come up with on our own) and food. We met her at the beginning of the stay; she was super friendly and helpful.
The only thing that took a bit of getting used to was the traffic, which started at about 6:00 a.m. on the weekdays that we were there. We slept with our windows open, so that probably had an effect. I was able to mostly sleep through it beginning on the second day. There was almost no traffic at night, so that wasn't a concern at all.
We had a wonderful experience in JB and Emily's "barn." Barn seems a funny word to use, as this little apartment had all the amenities and creature comforts of home. A lot of care and thought was put into everything- the linens, reading material and even toiletries. The pictures do not do it justice. JB shared with us the bounties of their lovely veggie garden and their recommendations for places to visit and eat were spot-on. This is a great location from which to explore Mount Desert Island, and we really appreciated being on the "quiet side."
The accommodation was better than described. Really lovely property. Very well maintained.
Our success rate with Airbnb is still 100%! We had another fabulous stay, this time in Emily's perfect corner of Mount Desert Island, Maine. The flat was ideal in every way. Clean, comfortable, cozy and we were greeted with a warm smile by Emily herself. The washer and dryer were the unexpected highlight after a day of sweating up and down Mount Champlain. It was great to be able to wash our hiking socks and not have them lying around with their lovely "scent"!
For those reviewers who mention the road, it is important to note, as is common throughout New England, most houses are situated close to the road and this one is no different than all the homes in Somesville, the town in which it lies. The road is only two lanes and although cars pass during the day, we were out exploring Acadia National Park, kayaking, and eating lobster so it certainly caused no problem. In the evening, it seems like the whole island settles in for the night and we enjoyed listening to the soft rain, insects chirping, and wind through the trees.
The location of Emily's place was perfect for us. We could easily go everywhere we wanted on the island and yet we didn't feel like tourists eating our breakfast in Emily's bright and incredibly cheery rooms, watching the island wake up around us.
I can only hope we can go back to Emily's some time very soon.
Cant say enough great things about Emily and her beautiful converted barn. She was dropping off goodies from her garden and ready to help with anything requests we had. The location was perfect. Spent the first night on the private patio in the back. Took a walk to the water that was only a few houses away from her great spot. It was spotless, full of great kitchen needs to make cooking fun and the beds were comfy to boot!

A local resident of Mount Desert Island for 15 years. I love the area we live in and am happy to recommend places to eat or things to do. This is our second year doing AirBnB and I'm excited to help people have a great vacation here.
