Dove ti troverai

Logan, Ohio, Stati Uniti

The scenic Hocking Hills is known for having beautiful and restful areas for seclusion in the rolling wooded hills and meadows to relax and rejuvenate. Some of our guests find our cottage and its setting so unique, enjoyable and relaxing that they choose to remain at the cottage and our property for their entire stay. They cook all meals at the cottage, hike our property, get in-cabin massages, read books, and just hang on the beautiful grounds for relaxation. Other guests prefer to be very active by hiking the nearby Hocking Hills State Parks and exploring many other adventures such as rock climbing, zip lining, canoeing, or horse back riding in the area. Then, when they return to the cottage after an active day, they may delight in a delicious meal cooked on the charcoal grill and then revel in unwinding tired muscles in the hot tub. Other guests book dinners out at gourmet inns or restaurants with quaint ambience. Other guests enjoy the history, art and shopping in the Hills area and nearby towns such as Historic Lancaster, Nelsonville and Athens. Also some guests venture into the area because of the local festivals such as the Washboard Festival, The Lily Festival, The Winter Hike/Ice Carving Festival and the Hocking Hills Indian Run. There’s such a variety of things to do in the Hocking Hills area. So, when you are ready to book, we are ready to greet you and offer you a very memorable stay in the Bear’s Den Cottage.

Hi--My name is Gwendolyn S. Corbett. I was born in Manila, Philippines in 1968 where I lived there for 7 years when my family served as Lutheran Missionaries. Upon return to the U.S., my family settled on a hilltop farm on Bear Run Rd., Logan, Ohio, Hocking Hills which is in Southeastern Ohio, rural Appalachia. My youth was spent riding Western Style horseback, playing in nature (the woods, hills, meadows and streams) and picking a lot of wild flowers. From 8th grade through my senior year of high school, I attended Lancaster High School in nearby Fairfield County. In 1993, I graduated from The Ohio State University from the College of Engineering, School of Architecture, Department of Landscape Architecture. After graduation from O.S.U., I worked in northern Kentucky at a Landscape Architecture and Planning Firm. When my parents opened the Bear Run In B&B in 1993, I drove home each weekend from Kentucky to help my mom make breakfast, clean up, serve guests and clean the guest rooms afterwards (later in 1996 upon my return to Hocking County, I ran my parent's B&B and expanded their business in the cabins and cottage sector). As you can see, I've been involved in the tourism business in the Hocking Hills since 1993! I'm seasoned and tenured. In 1995 I married my husband, Mike, who is from the snow belt of Syracuse, NY. After living in Central New York for 2 years and playing in the beautiful snow, we bought into family property adjacent to the property where I grew up on Bear Run Road. My husband and I designed and built the Bear's Den Cottage ourselves. We both came from building families. My dad was a general contractor in addition to being a part-time minister and Mike's dad was a full-time skilled carpenter. All of the timber, including the studs for walls and siding, was locally timbered by the nearby Amish. The roof is a red metal roof which provides wonderful ambiance during the rain. Since I opened my cottage for business in 2000, I have operated a Green/Environmentally Responsible business. My entire life I've been an advocate for respecting and treasuring the beautiful earth that we, as humans, have been entrusted with. In the late 1990's I taught environmental education for Hocking and Athens Counties. Around 2007/8, I created a "Going Green Educational" Editorial Column that ran in the Logan Daily News and The Athens Messenger. Some of these articles were also uploaded onto NPR's site to be accessed by people all over. I am an ex-officio board member of the Hocking Hills Tourism Association where I helped to form the Green Initiative. When fracking was attempting to come into Ohio's State Parks, I not only stood up for my own business, but the Hocking Hills State Parks and all other Ohio State Parks by visiting Ohio's State Reps and Senators. Plus, I made speeches that included a big one to the Ohio Senate Finance Committee. This went on for over a month. My intent was to prevent the fracking from coming directly into state parks and to mitigate impacts on our state as a whole. My passions run deep. Since I was a young girl, I've been a singer. My singing experiences have been diverse including singing Irish/Celtic A Capella in local Southeastern Ohio Irish/Celtic Festivals. I produced an Celtic CD for demo purposes as well as a Children's CD which has most of the songs I sang to my 2 boys when they were babies and toddlers. Both of these are A Capella. The Children's CD I've layered harmonies on top. I've performed in various choirs including church and community. In the early 2000's I was in local Hocking County Rock Band that played 50's, 60's, 70's era music. Currently I'm in a band in Columbus, Ohio that plays Americana all originals. Since my youth I've also written poetry. In the last year I've written about 10 new poems and a few songs as well. It is my hope to turn these poems into Children's Books some day and have some proceeds help fund youth nutrition in areas of extreme poverty. If my dream comes to fruition, my first goal would be to help the children on the Native American Reservations. Finally, I am an alternative healer and have relied heavily on alternative therapies and remedies for healing for over 25 years. I thank God that there are so many options for healthy eating and healthy living that are more and more accessible to everyone in the United States. From 2006-2014, I operated a very unique Nature and Wellness Retreat at the Bear's Den Lodge which was originally a custom-designed post and beam home for my husband, 2 boys and me. This retreat center hosted the following retreats: Green, Yoga, Spiritual, Wellness, Spa, and Birding. This lodge is way up a hill and removed from the Bear's Den Cottage by a large patch of forest. During most guests' stays, I will be staying up at the lodge and can be easily accessed in person should guests need me. Otherwise, guests can always reach me by calling or texting my cell phone or by emailing me. Travel is another passion of mine. In high school I traveled with my Spanish classes to both Mexico and Spain. I almost minored in Spanish. At this point I can speak very broken Spanish. One of the songs I sing in my band is in Spanish! My favorite place on earth at this point is the Canadian Rockies, Alberta, Banff and Lake Louise. In recent years, I've been there twice, one being at Christmas when the temps were negative 40 with wind chill for our entire week of ski vacation. It was cold, but we still played everyday in the snow and I enjoyed getting in the therapeutic hot springs watching every bit of hair on people's heads, face and body turn white with frost! British Columbia, especially Whistler and Tofino, is not so bad either. Just kidding! BC is gorgeous! My second favorite place is the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona. Both of these places transform me and offer lots of visual healing therapy. A couple of years ago, I was fortunate to visit Ireland on a sacred earth singing journey. Ireland definitely is in competition with Banff and Sedona. The people there were so warm, welcoming and friendly and wanted to adopt me. Alas, I had to return to feed my 2 growing boys, do laundry and clean my house. Reality always has a way of keeping us in check!

Most of the time for the duration of our guests’ stay, I’m residing in a dwelling onsite up a 1,000’ drive and completely removed from guests (separated by a thick forest and terrain). So, if guests need me, I encourage them to come up and see me if they want. I’m easily accessible to guests should they need something. Guests can reach me via phone, text and/email.
