Ideal for one person or a couple which wishes to share a queen bed. Bathroom across from the bedroom. Always a shining clean white bathtub/shower, toilet and sink! Lo spazio
My house was built in 1912 by Norwegian lumbermen and it has a footprint of 880 square feet. It stands in a row of houses each occupying fifty foot wide lots. Across the street is a woods and Rose Island Park is a block away. I am very close by foot to both Lake Superior and the Ontonagon River. We are located in a region of Michigan known as the U.P. or the Upper Peninsula (not to be confused with the other U.P. in India called Uttar Pradesh).

What I offer is a comfortable space plus my hospitality and service. For example, weather permitting my sheets hang outside on the clothes line after being cleaned so my guests always smell the freshness of Lake Superior as they go to bed.

I also take care in preparing good meals (which are included as part of the listing price while no other local listings provide cooked meals or even a breakfast.) Considering the cost of dining out or take-out meals, in addition to the on/off nature of dine-in possibilities now, my breakfasts and dinnners are not only tasty but convenient and time-saving.

The house is also a quiet relaxing place. A recent guest spent the evening reading Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild.

The house has a fully equipped restaurant-grade kitchen, a prep table, and a seven-foot long dining room table. A stove top expresso maker and a milk steamer are on hand for expresso and cappucino. Two pour-through funnels for drip coffee supplement the expresso maker. Top quality coffee always available. Guests may also prepare their own meals if they wish. Before arrival you may provide a list of desired ingredients and I will confirm whether or not they are on hand. The pantry is usually well-stocked, esp. with baking goods. I often have freshly made yoghurt and I have made other entrees from that, including Eastern Anatolian Yoghurt Soup. Two "b's" are in my understanding of an Airbnb. So in addition to a bedroom, there is a breakfast. Depending on my schedule and whether guests would like, I will cook other meals. Please inform me of dietary avoidances and preferences ahead of time. Accommodations made for vegan, vegetarian and keto diets, e.g. removing bread from a breakfast casserole recipe or eliminating milk or cream from curried apple soup. If desired, a dinner will be ready for a guest's arrival. Extra wine glasses available. Strict kosher dishware is unavailable as all mine is secondhand and cannot be verified as having been used/washed separately for dairy and meat.

The laundry room has a Kenmore front loader washing machine as well as HE detergent and an ironing board. The front room is a living room with a wall-to-wall library.

The bedroom is in the back off the hallway accessible from the kitchen. Across from the bedroom is the bathroom. The bedroom has an Ethan Allen queen bed above which hangs a ceiling fan (there is another small fan on the bureau). This room also has three opening windows. The view from this bedroom in the non-snow part of the year includes a bed of king ferns directly beneathe the window and of a raspberry hedge further back. The yard in back is also shaded by two box alder trees. Flower and herb garden in the front yard.

While tips are accepted though not at all expected, I cannot assent to occasional requests by guests for me to tell them an additional amount of money which they might wish to pay on top of the Airbnb listing price. For me to suggest an additional payment diminishes the value of my hospitality.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
The following remarks are mainly about my measures to enhance the house's cleanliness and environmental quality as well as to guard the health of my visitors. I am very grateful for the cooperation of guests in this endeavor where their contributions may come in, esp. with regard to abstaining from spraying aerosols in the bedroom and from eating and drinking outside the dining area.

I try to keep the room and house as fresh as possible and free of chemical odors and residues. Use of AEROSOL hair or deodorant sprays is thus UNWELCOME. Their use is also DANGEROUS as aerosol molecules have been found to transport the Covid virus (BBC Report, Oct. 5, 2020). Their noxious odor remains in the air for a long time and it is an ordeal to get rid of it in time for subsequent guests. Moreover, besides picking up Covid hitchhikers, the use of aerosol hair sprays and deodorants sends formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) not only into the air, but also onto surfaces throughout a house. Aerosol hairsprays and deodorants are related to an increased risk of heart disease, strokes, lung disease, asthma and more (I just about choke on them). Please use alternatives or keep the bathroom door closed and the vent fan on, but certainly do not spray aerosol hairsprays and deodorants in the bedroom. If spraying in the bathroom, always close the bathroom door when you leave and keep the vent fan on. I mention the use of aerosols here because many people are attached to their use. It is not my place to request that prospective visitors permanently change their habits, but only to mention that those guests might be better off choosing other hosts who may be indifferent to aerosol smells and their harmful aspects.

I do my best to make my house a safe and healthy place, including the use of low VOC paints, eliminating sources of dust such as cellulose insulation (which had previously been used in the attic), never mixing food scraps and waste with trash (and not keeping food waste in the house afterwards) and preferring high quality paper filters over fiberglass ones for the forced air heating system. All fiberglass insulation, another source of formaldehyde in addition to possessing proven carcinogenic qualities, was removed in favor of rigid foam or cotton insulation rated for class A fire resistance.

Fine wooden furniture finishes suffer from moisture and abuse. No wet towels, clothing or other items should ever be hung on the queen bed canopy. Towels may be thrown immediately into the laundry hamper (There are more clean ones stacked up at the bathroom entrance).

No deposits or cleaning charges here (which sometimes end up doubling the cost of other listings). However, I request guests not to consume or store food and beverages in the house outside dining and kitchen area. Tea and coffee stains can cost hundreds of dollars of damage to my frankly expensive bedding and carpeting in the bedroom. They can also can produce thousands of dollars of damage to my fine furniture and handmade carpets in the living room. The dining area is a welcoming place to sit and drink coffee or tea for hours into the night or throughout the day.

Germ disinfectant used on all door handles, kitchen and bathroom surfaces per CDC rules. Metal handles may be covered. Pillowcases have liners and are double-cased. Duvets are used for winter blanketing and quilts. Mattress cover, shower curtain and bath mat changed or washed between visitors.

Ontonagon, Michigan, Stati Uniti

I am 15 miles east of the Porcupine State Park, Michigan's largest state park. Ontonagon County is a land of forests, waterfalls and Lake Superior shoreline. A hiking destination during the short summer, it also offers skiing in the longer winter. For backpackers and serious hikers I recommend the set of maps issued by the forestry service for the Ottawa National Forest. These are the only maps I know of which include hundreds of national forest roads, lakes, rivers and streams in Ontonagon County. They include all roads, including many missing from highway and GPS maps. Cellphone reception is sketchy in many areas. (Want to hide out? Or perhaps do you want to get out once you've gotten in? The second would be the one for me. These are the maps to get!) There is an eastern, a central, a southern and a western map: four in all. The western one includes the Porcupine State Park. National Forest Road No. 400, for example, is the only way to reach Cascade Falls. The GPS and cellphone maps, by contrast, do not give satisfactory detail. You may also notice that highway signs for the waterfalls are sometimes missing or misleading. The forestry service has at least three offices in the area. One is in Bessemer 60 miles away on Hwy. 2. Another is on Hwy. 45 in Watersmeet 48 miles south of Ontonagon. That office is south of the intersection of Hwy. 2 and 45. The closest one to Ontonagon is about three miles south of town (on the left going south) on Hwy. 45.

My house is a 20 minute walk to Lake Superior. In case you fish or canoe, I am a half block from the Ontonagon River, which is the Upper Peninsula's largest river. There is a boardwalk leading from nearby Zinc Street through the park to the riverside quay. From there one might walk on Rose Island down to Lake Superior. Of course, one could also continue on Zinc Street through the back streets and get to the lake as well. River Street parallels Rose Island and this is Ontonagon's commercial and entertainment hub, though the supermarket and dollar stores are on Hwy. 38. The Eagle Club and the VFW bar/restaurants are open to visitors as well as the other commercial establishments on nearby River St. Every bar and restaurant offers Wi-fi (as well as the public library and laundromat). I personally prefer the spaciousness and lighting of the VFW and the Eagles Club (Stubbs and Shamrock bars are rather dark, though pool is offered at Stubbs and on Thursday nights there is a pool competition. Roxy's is my preferred bar simply because it offers good hamburgers and fries. It is a little quirk at places such as Roxy's and Syl's restaurants that they do not serve pickles with sandwiches unless the customer asks for them. If you want your onions grilled and your buns grilled, Roxey's will do that but remember to request it). If you go to Syl's, don't go there for its coffee, which is extremely weak and will set you back $1.65 before taxes and tips. There is a new restaurant on River Street called the UP North Cafe (a pun on Upper Peninsula). The closest coffee and sandwich place is Connie's, which is a two block walk down South Steel St. to River Street. It has a take out window and some chairs outside. This place along with the Holiday gas station across the street are the only two public establishments with good coffee. Holidays usually has an online coupon for 69-cent coffee. It is sad that in the United States unlike Europe, coffee is only an afterthought at bars (but the most reliably good coffee is at my house anyhow according to Ontonagon's 'best place to have coffee' list ten years running). All places mentioned above are within 20 minutes' walk of my house.

Ontonagon is 110 miles west of Marquette, 75 miles north of Eagle River (100 miles from Minocqua ) , and 65 miles east of Ironwood. No fast food restaurants around for 50 miles. Environmentalists should know that no local stores promote recycling in any way. However, 28 miles south of us Settler's Co-op grocery store in Bruce Crossing refunds customers a nickel for each bag they bring in to use for their groceries. Shop there on the way up!

Former military translator dude in Iraq for marines and later for the Navy Seals in Bahrain. Studied Arabic in Georgetown Univ. and Russian at Middlebury College. I lived in Iran and learned Persian. I have also lived in Libya, Malaysia, Bulgaria and Albania. The Albanians are among the friendliest and most hospitable people I have ever met (which is saying a lot since I have generally felt at home wherever I have lived). I was born in Detroit, but grew up a Badger despite my Wolverine beginnings. Later on I lived in Wallingford, Connecticut, Washington, D.C. and Austin, Texas. I enjoy reading. I like the BBC World News and Sky News. I listen to Fresh Air.
