Descrizione

This intimate home grew around an antique rice barn. The inside & outside of the house are seamlessly connected. It's located in the hills above Singaraja, attached to rice fields. Down the sea, behind the mountains. A beautiful gorge with waterfalls is on walking distance.

I am a sculpting artist what you can recognize in the way this house is built. It grew organically around an 100 years old wooden rice barn.
Interior and exterior blend seamlessly together. The living room comprises an open kitchen.
The wooden ricebarn is lifted up by pillars and has access by a staircase. This is the main bedroom. One level lover is an extra floor to sleep. Adults can not stand straight up, but the Queen mattresss offers space for 2 persons. Children love it!
The roof covered semi-open bathroom is a separate building in which you find a hot and cold water shower, sink and a toilet.
If you look for more beds or prefer a more spacious bedroom, then there is a separate house 50m. uphill in the street (rumah tamu - see the picture).
It belongs to Pondok Apsari and has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom with hot water. It is only rented out as extra space for guests of Pondok Apsari who may use all the services of Pondok Apsari. This requires an additional fee.

The property is 2.000 m2 and all is at your disposal. A part of it we still use as an rice field.
There is also a roof covered studio and parking place, a swimmingpool and an Balinese resting place in the garden/balé.

We try to tune on the wishes and requirements of the guests. The English speaking staff takes care of household services cleaning, garden and pool
On request they can arrange daily breakfast, other meals and other services like driving the car.
Also lunch and diner (even gluten free) can be arrange, but must be ordered in advance.
I come from the Netherlands, from a family of 9 children. I studied as a social worker but later art switched to become an artist and studied at the famous Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. I love combining all kinds of materials (
I came to Bali for the first time in 2008 and on my first visit I fell in love with the place which was still an empty ricefield. Together with my then husband I started to build up the place in stages. Unfortunately my husband got ill and died a year later, so he never saw the house finished. I finished it in its present state in 2013. You can say the house and swimming pool are the biggest pieces of art I have created so far.
I am passionate about Bali and I want to please as much people as possible to experience this real authentic part of Bali and being so close to the overwhelming nature.
This happened after I met a new love, Jack, with whom I live together since 2015.

If wanted, we can advice you what to do in the neighbourhood. We also offer guided tours and wonderful hikes, like wonderful waterfall nearby. Or picturesque sights are a short scooter ride away
Also art workshops like 'cutting your own statue out of a mix of volcanic sand and cement'. (It's a traditional method that locals uses for the statues in their temples)

Although Pondok Apsari is only 15 /20 min. drive from the city Singaraja, it is located in a very rural and authentic area. In spite of mobil phones, TV and motorbikes, many families live like 20 years ago.
It's 330m above sea level, a place with a panoramic view. It's on walking distance of a jungle area and exiting river in a gorge with swimming spots by waterfalls. They call it 'the secret garden of Sambangan'.
For food there are some small local shops, but the choose is limited. For real shopping you can rent a car or motorbike to go to town. There is a restaurant and small warungs (small local restaurant) on walking distance.

There is no public transport. Therefor we offer a pickup from the airport or from other places and during your stay a car with driver is available to rent.
You also can rent a motorbike (international driving license recommended)

If appreciated the dog Jaga stay in the house. His name means 'protection
and he does justice to his name. He loves joining a trekking.
The staff takes care of his food.

What a beautiful place in the middle of the ricefields and close to the jungle! We did the long trekking with Ji, his daughter and dog Jaga, which was amazing! Ji told us everything about the balinese life and nature and took great care of us, which made our stay even more special. We used the scooter to explore the area, wich was a great adventure. Left with the best memories!

Romantické místo celkově hodnotíme kladně. Najdou se ale některé drobné detaily které dojem pokazí. Třeba počítat s horším vstupem do ložnice a opravdu špatnou cestu k vile. Ji místní správce je skvělý. Dik Karien za zajímavou zkušenost.

The converted rice barn is a lovely place to stay in. Very airy. The pool is beautiful and very nice on a hot day. Ji is a good man and we enjoyed the trekking trip to see and swim in waterfalls very much. Keep in mind that this place is very isolated so the owner does everything they can to increase the price of your stay with add-ons. This is a shame. We decided to get groceries before our arrival in order to not have to buy food from her. When we booked the very expensive driver through her, she offered to have us stop at a supermarket on the way, but this was not communicated to the driver. Neither was our pickup location properly communicated to the driver so we had to walk to a different street with all our luggage. Wifi at the home is also an extra charge if you use too much by accident and as a result we did not receive the email she sent to us while we were staying there. Because we did not want to pay to check our emails, we received no communication from her at all. If you are as taken with this place as we were after finding it on airbnb, and you must book it, then just keep in mind that it does not end with the nightly fee. You will have a relaxing stay if you understand in advance that you will be paying a ridiculous amount for transport, as well as anything extra that she can think of to charge you for. She will probably make someone pay to use the full bottle of olive oil that we bought and had to leave there.

Risposta di Karien:
Hi Julia and Colin, I’m happy you liked Pondok Apsari and the service provided by our housekeeper Ji. It is a pity that despite that, you have some serious complaints about our services. And I am happy to explain our side of the story. First of all I tried to get an exact address where to pick you up and even sent 2 emails with that question. But the address you gave was still was not accurate enough to find the exact location. I am sorry that you had to walk to the pick-up location with your suitcases. Our guests are totally free to take advantage of our pick-up service. We have a market conform price for that and if you think you can order it cheaper elsewhere you must do that. Anyway I offered you the price and you accepted it. You mention that Pondok Apsari is quite isolated, if you mean that there are no supermarkets on walking distance you are right. That is why we as an extra service provide meals or meal items on request. Prices are sent upfront so that it not comes as a surprise. Also here, if you do not like the service choose otherwise.Catering is not our business. Of course you pay more than when you buy it yourself, but take into consideration that it takes us time, energy, and transport to reaiise it. We like to be compensated for this. The Wifi we offer follows a fair use policy. We offer 2 GB for free. This is more than enough for a few weeks of usage for emails and web surfing. If you apply streaming video it will go fast and then the 2 GB is even not enough for 1 day. But this kind of entertainment is not included in our offer. If the 2 Gb is gone Ji has to go to Singaraja to top it up. I understand that you wanted to cook for yourself and for that reason wanted our driver to bring you to a supermarket, which he did. I told him before he left, so I cannot understand what went wrong if you say that he was not aware of your requirement. Of course we do not charge guest for the items that were left by earlier guests. It is not fair that you mention this without any proof that we would do that. We do our utmost best to satisfy the needs of our guests which is not always easy, because everybody have different wishes. I feel sorry that the communication and information that we exchanged upfront did not meet its purpose of preventing unpleasant surprises. We will use your comments to enhance the quality of ours services to minimise possible disappointments of future guests. Kind regards, Karien Froeling

Peaceful, secluded yet full of subtle luxuries... this was a beautiful and relaxing experience. We only wished we could have stayed longer. Our guide, Ji, was very knowledgable about the local flora and fauna and was a pleasure to go on a trek with - he answered all of my questions and shared wonderful stories about Balinese life. Thank you for letting us share in this piece of paradise.

If you are looking to reconnect yourself to nature and your soul, Pondok Apsari is the perfect place to stay... with a house that is simple yet beautiful, a pool that is not only refreshing but in harmony with its surroundings, and a view that nourishes, not only your eyes but you spirit as well...Then there's Ji who will be there to take care of you in true Balinese hospitality and take you wherever you need to go as you will need some means of transportation here if you don't have your own. Make sure you refer to the price list provided in advance for all services/transfers/food and beverages. This place is wonderfully all open so there are no barriers to the breathtaking scenery that surrounds the house but you too must be open to little but harmless creatures that may sometimes wander in...:) A trip to the falls is also a must but lastly, get a healing massage or have your palm read or both by the gifted Padmi for an even more unforgettable experience....Kudos to Karien who did an amazing job despite her challenges. Thank you! This will remain in our minds and hearts as a truly special and unique place...

This quirky little spot in the middle of rice fields was perfect for quiet time, for doing nothing, for resting and restoring. Loved the waterfall trek, the delicious food cooked every day for me, Gi was a wonderful tour guide and driver and chef! If you want a piece of heaven, a place to read, listen to the frogs and feel spoilt, this is the place for you.

We loved our stay! Not really any surprises - must be comfortable with critters and humidity. Karien was very accommodating and prompt to reply. Ji is an excellent caretaker and quickly became like one of the family. We loved seeing the beauty of this region!

I am a Dutch sculptor and about 4 years ago I started to convert a virgin sawa (ricefield) in the hills above Singaraja into a tropical paradise. It is grown around a 100 years old “lumbung” (Balinese rice barn on columns). It got a seamlessly connection between inside and outside. The swimming pool follows the shape of the sawa’s and when you swim you have a magnificent view. I remarried recently and live now with my new husband,. Therefor I can share Pondok Apsari with guests to experience to live so close to nature. It is great to share that feeling of freedom.
