Enjoy New Orleans on what was once the Original Grounds of the Historic Luling Mansion!! Walking distance to Street Car, Cemeteries, great restaurants, coffeeshop, grocery store, Bayou St. John, City Park, Museum of Art, great architecture and much more!


This listing is for the upstairs unit of The Purple Orchid, and this stunning home is located in Esplanade Ridge, one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city (in my completely unbiased opinion of course, but I do think reviews speak for themselves!).

This home features 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, hardwood floors, a fully functional kitchen, a laundry room, LOTS of artwork, central air and heat, off street parking and over 2000 square feet of living space in this upstairs unit alone. The location, artwork and architecture are really what set this place apart. The streetcar is a pleasant 5 to 10 minute walk down Esplanade Avenue from the home, and there is a bus stop just a couple blocks away that will take you straight to the French Quarter. Also within walking distance are a number of great small restaurants, a coffee shop, small market, wine shop and again, all surrounded by beautiful architecture and 100+ year old live oaks.

PLEASE NOTE, this is a quiet residential neighborhood and not a home for parties or large gatherings of any sort (outside visitors/ guests MUST be approved prior to booking). Also because the owners do not want too much foot traffic gathered in either the upstairs unit or the downstairs unit, we do not rent out the whole home (upstairs and down) to the same group.

Also, guest comfort is a top priority for us, and with this being the upstairs unit, there will be guests below you as well. We do ask that you be considerate and keep volume to a reasonable level, especially in the evenings, and we ask the same from the downstairs group as well.

I like to let guests decide how much privacy they want when they visit. I do like to greet you whenever possible and make sure you're settled, but we do have a lockbox for late arrivals or if I'm at work. I'm always available and if you have questions, always feel free to contact me.

Really, common courtesy is the biggest rule and most guests are pretty great, but having done this for awhile now, there are a few things that are very important to me as a host that I kindly ask you to be aware of:

1) No outside guests, including visitors. We have a maximum of 6 people
2) No smoking inside
3) No drugs
4) No pets
5) There is no daily housekeeping service; fresh linens and towels are included but a daily maid service is not.
6) Please contact me a day or two before arrival to confirm ETA and keys, and to make sure I'll be there to greet you.
7)Understand that sometimes I will not be available to greet you as I have other obligations to attend to. In those scenarios, I will make sure you are able to get into the house without any problems.
8) Keys must be returned upon departure; failure to do so will result in a $100 fee to get both locks changed.
9) Guest agrees not to download any unlawful content while using the host's wifi.
10) Homeowner is not responsible for any accidents, injuries or illness that occur while on premises or its facilities.
11) Please respect noise and foot-traffic levels at night so other neighbors do not get upset.
12)Checkout is 11:00AM. If flexibility is needed, please let host know in advance.

This may be the most important "rule" and I have therefore made it number one, and it has yet to happen with the numerous guests I've hosted, but please be aware that by accepting this booking you agree that as a host, I have the right to ask you to leave if I am in any way uncomfortable with your being here. If I do this, I will offer you a full refund for the remaining time of your stay and will aid you if asked in finding new accommodations, but by accepting this booking, you agree to vacate the premises promptly if so requested. (I've learned with just a couple bad experiences that this is an all-too-important clause that would have saved me a lot of headache in the past had I included it).

Our new home away from home in New Orleans! We already fell in love with the place from the pictures alone. However, the pictures do little justice to the place. It is beautiful! It is so big that we didn't even utilize all of the rooms while we were there. As usual, we all hung out in the kitchen and dining room the whole time! The beds were very comfy and the bedrooms were large and unique. Every day we would walk around and notice something new that we didn't see before. The decoration in this place is fantastic. It is reminiscent of a museum, thrift store, and antique shop. The washer and dryer were great to have. We were so sad to have to pack up and leave when our vacation was over. We felt so much at home there that it is hard to image someone else staying there before and after us. We are definitely booking this place again for our yearly Easter trip to New Orleans!

We stayed in the Purple Orchid upstairs for a family trip with six adults and one baby. Everyone had plenty of room and enjoyed the eclectic artwork and the quiet neighborhood. In addition to being close to beautiful City Park, the area had a good mix of more neighborhoody (i.e., not touristy) bars and restaurants. We didn't end up meeting Michael since he was busy when we arrived, but check-in was easy and he even reached out midweek to make sure the A/C was working OK in the bedrooms. I'd definitely recommend Michael's place for family travel or a group looking to experience the city from a less party-centric home base.

We loved this wonderful, colorful, artsy, comfortable space. It was very spacious, great ac/heat, comfortable bedrooms, and ever amenity you could possibly need for a comfortable stay. Michael was incredibly flexible and allowed us to check in early and check out late. He left us 3 keys because we had 3 couples staying. Michael was thoughtful and generous in every way. We will return to New Orleans and definitely book this wonderful place again.

Great place - perfect mid-city location close to City Park, local restaurants and the trolley. House is exactly as pictured, with plenty of room and a very eclectic vibe. Mike was very attentive, and took care of an issue that we had with the smoke alarm right away as soon as we notified him. Overall, very pleased with our stay. Minor cons would be things you would expect with an older house like this - circuit breakers blew a few times in the kitchen for the microwave and refrigerator, so had to plug appliances into different outlets. The microwave definitely needs to be replaced. Also both toilets became clogged, and you can't take two showers at the same time or the hot water goes in and out. Finally, the bedrooms are very spacious, but the second bathroom is VERY small (and I'm from NYC), so if you have more than 3 guests, this might be an issue. Again, more minor things, and overall a great stay.

Thanks for letting me know Patrick, glad you all enjoyed yourselves and sorry to hear about these inconveniences. I checked with the owner and we are definitely going to get an electrician out for the microwave issue as well as a plumber for the bathrooms - this is something that definitely will need fixing, appreciate the heads up!

We had an amazing stay with our group of 4. Plenty of space, very interesting decor. The neighborhood is a lovely respite from the French quarter craziness, and it's walking distance from the art Museum and St. Louis cemetery no. 3. Mike provided us with a detailed guide to the house. Loved our stay and would stay here again!

The house is beautiful, very well kept. Michael was very accommodating when the washing machine broke he took our laundry for us and did it at another location which was greatly appreciated. It was also in a very beautiful neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle which meant quiet peaceful nights.

Hi all! Thank you for looking at my profile. I've become something of an AirBnB veteran now with over a year's time hosting people and it's been a truly wonderful experience, one that's allowed me meet some great people and see the world just a little differently. I'm someone who loves to meet new faces from all walks of life, and as an avid traveler myself I can share a lot of my travel experiences as well as my expertise on the great city of New Orleans. And I have lived here for over half my life, so I have plenty to share! Some of the things I love to do include reading, art, health, cooking and as mentioned, meeting new people.

Also, until very recently I have been career student and I've done a little of everything from interpreting and painting to landscaping and interior design. With my diverse background and all the rental activity I've seen, I decided to become a licensed realtor and have never looked back since!
