Il quartiere

Sumida is a small ward right beside Asakusa along the Sumida River. The area is a combination of traditional craftsmen, geisha along side the modernity of the Sky Tree Tower and Sky Tree Town.

Ryogoku, Kinshicho and Asakusa are all short bicycle rides. There are 3 large supermarkets within 3 min walk including large Ito Yokado , 10 min walk to Sakurabashi at Sumida River. Recently the neighborhood has had a surge in popularity with multiple small restaurants, bars, wine bars and a couple of places that serve craft beer (Popeye's is also just a 10 min bicycle ride away).

Sumida-ku

Un giro nei dintorni

There is access by train from Narita or Haneda without changing trains, with either airport taking less than one hour to Hikifune / Oshiage.

I am a long term Japan/Asia resident, now living the American dream in the Pacific Northwest. I am an avid epicurean, and happy to share my off-the-beaten-path Tokyo restaurant recommendations with fellow omnivores.

The Sumida property was inherited by my wife from her grandmother and sits in an old Tokyo neighborhood populated by traditional craftsmen SHOKUNIN. I designed our Tokyo house in 2009 and managed its construction. The concept was threefold: 1. creating something that on the outside was congruous with a modest neighborhood. 2. creating a living space that gave a sense of volume in a hyper-dense city; a living room that would accommodate a full size trampoline and that would theoretically allow an adult to jump on that imaginary trampoline without banging their head on the ceiling, 3. an incomplete home, that would evolve with the needs of the occupants. I accomplished all three and learned a lot from my second house construction in Tokyo.

While the house is currently rented to long term occupants, please save our property and will update again when it becomes available.

*Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about unbecoming everything that isn’t really you so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place. –Unknown
