Nestled in the pristine nature of Swale Canyon our a-frame offers a tranquil getaway. Whether you need some quiet time to reflect, write and ponder nature's beauty or you need a place to lay your head after an active day on the Klickitat River or hiking the Klickitat Trail or hunting in the wilderness, our cabin awaits you. No other buildings or residences in sight, you will have true privacy to relax and unwind. We seek to curate a restful environment and discourage loud or partying guests.

Lo spazio
Our a-frame cottage is a work of love that we hope you will enjoy. Many hands have worked on this project. Practically all of the materials have been reclaimed. The entire cottage is fed by a year-round artesian spring. Power is provided by solar. You can lounge by the creek or hike the two miles of private trails here or the hundreds of acres of public land abutting our property or cross the creek and find yourself on the many miles of the Klickitat Trail. The primary residence is located nearly a 1/4 mile from your lodging. We are available if you walk up the hill or by walkie-talkie (no phone coverage here!).

Accesso per gli ospiti
Guests will have full access to the a-frame and surrounding trails. We are glad to show folks around the farm if they choose to walk up and visit.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
What to expect when living off-grid and in the woods?

Living off-grid may take a moment of adjustment. It’s an opportunity to have a different relationship to electricity, water and heat as well as a different relationship to your phone. We like to live comfortably even as we live off-grid. Our systems are in place for comfort and ease, but as with all systems off-grid, they occasionally have glitches and need some extra attention.

Water – we are fortunate to have an artesian well supplying our property with water. It has its limitations though as the pressure changes depending on how many taps are open. The most pressure is available when only one tap is used at a time.

Bathroom – We have a compost toilet in the A-frame. Paper and human waste are simply covered in wood chips. We will attend to changing out the compost bucket every 24 hours of your stay. We will post information about this composting style in the bathroom, if you are interested.

Heat – The A-frame is heated by propane. We have a propane fireplace and a propane water heater. We generally turn off the fireplace for the summer but also provide a heater if the temperature drops.

Electrical – The electricity is supplied by a solar setup. There's one outlet in the house, adequate for charging phones or computers, but appliances with a heavier draw (i.e. hair-dryers, electrical hot water kettles, etc.) will shut the system down.

Amenities - When it comes to essential amenities, we provide toilet paper and hand towels. We have fun built-in beds (3 twins, 1 queen, 1 queen futon) with good mattresses. We ask that you bring sleeping bags and pillows and any other bed linen you need. We mainly do not provide linen because of the off-grid nature of our property and the energy waste of washing linen. Linen is available to rent for a fee.

Communication – Assume that there is no cellphone coverage for a 15-mile radius surrounding our property. There are random coverage pockets here and there, but they are not dependable and it is best not to rely on those pockets. We will set you up with walkie-talkies to reach us at the primary residence which is a ¼ mile hike uphill (you are most welcome to walk up there to ask a question as well – it’s a nice workout!).

Kids- They love it here! But just a heads-up: the stairs to the loft are steep and can be difficult for toddler ages. Also we have lovely decks (as shown in the pictures) with very simple railings which could be potentially a fall hazard for little ones.

Critters – We appreciate living in a place where animals are living wild. We want to keep the humans safe and the animals wild. We ask you to avoid attracting the wild animals by keeping food inside. We have had sightings in person and with trail cameras of wild turkeys, bobcats, bear, cougar, etc. In general wild animals will avoid humans.
And there are bugs of all sorts. We recommend doing a tick check after you have been out. Bring bug repellant for mosquitos and such.

Hunting – Like many rural or remote areas, people will practice target shooting on their properties. You may hear the sound of gunshots now and then.

Quiet Hours - 10pm-8am. If you are looking for a party house, this isn't the place.

Basalt Blossom is the shared vision of Carrie Stambaugh and Scott Davison. There's plenty of rock! We're hoping the rock can support all sorts of blossoming here. Basalt Blossom is a 40-acre homestead which backs to hundreds of acres of state and tribal forestlands, creating a peaceful and beautiful setting in which to invite others for educational experiences in permaculture and agroforestry or personal contemplation or end-of-life living. There's always plenty for us to do on our off-grid property whether it is construction, forest safety work, attending to animals, maintaining our solar and hydro power systems. Play for us means taking a walk in the beauty and letting ourselves really see and feel the nature that we can easily take for granted when we get caught up in chores.
