The "Casa del Silencio" (House of Silence), is a quaint Earth cabin, located a five-minute drive from the outskirts of San Cristóbal de las Casas on the south side of Huitepec; a Sacred mountain for the Indigenous people of Chiapas. Built as part of a meditation retreat centre where yoga, Tai Chi, and meditation has been practiced for almost two decades, this is a place of peace and rest! First thing in the morning the sun pours into the east windows and baths the cabin with warmth and magic!

Lo spazio
This Earth House is decorated with paraphernalia from all around the world: including an antique sewing machine stand and cover from Barcelona, Spain, tapestries from Guatemala, a tablecloth and numerous pottery and wood carved pieces from different regions of Mexico, pictures from Spain and Portugal, a wooden guest book holder from Honduras, a handmade wool blanket from Ecuador, etc.

Being equipped with its own private mini kitchen with a two-burner hot plate/toaster oven, brand new fridge with a freezer, blender, coffee maker, and filtered water dispenser (purified water provided free for guest use), our guests are able to prepare simple meals at their leisure. Coffee, tea, and purified water are provided for our guests for breakfast (milk is not included).

The private bathroom is about 40 meters from the cabin and is equipped with a hot water shower, toilet and sink.

The double bed has a brand new Sealy mattress and natural fiber sheets and blankets that are laundered with natural soaps. Additionally, there is the option of a double floor mattress in the gym for an additional person or two.

There is a Dr. Heater that is one of the best alternative and most efficient heating sources that combines PTC and Quartz Infrared Element, in an energy-efficient way. "Equipped with a Dual Heating System and High-Velocity Low Noise blower, the Dr. Infrared Heater increases the heat distribution and transfer rate and the result is heating your room to a comfortable temperature, fast."

The cabin has its own router, providing our guests with a high-speed Internet connection. You can use it wirelessly or connect with an ethernet connection, which is also provided upon request.

In front of the guest cabin in another cabin which is a shared space that is available or our guest´s use. It is equipped with yoga mats, meditation stools, weights, a stationary bicycle, and a massage table.

The cabin is equipped with board games such as Chess, Checkers, Pictionary, Racko, Scrabble, Crib, decks of cards, etc. for our guests to play at their leisure.

We would love to enhance your stay in Chiapas and are more than willing to orient you to activities and places to visit during your stay here. We work in close relationship with a local Indigenous Cultural Tour guide, Shun, who is a passionate Indigenous man who not only is a certified Tourist Guide, but is totally qualified for the job due to his deep and detailed knowledge and understanding of the history, culture, customs, traditions, fauna, flora, artisan work, and spirituality of the Indigenous people in Chiapas. He offers a wide variety of experiences, at super reasonable prices, that are a must if you want to enrich your stay in Chiapas and learn more than the average tourist! Here is a sample of the tours that he offers:

SHUN TOURS CHIAPAS
All tours include private transportation, guide service, and traditional breakfast with the women of the community, as well as typical drinks and tastings that we offer in the communities.

TEXTILE ROUTES
The aim of these routes is to know a part of the production processes of all the art of weaving in the waist loom and hand embroidery, to understand the meaning of the Mayan iconography, to know directly the artisan teachers who preserve this art millenary, and the raw material they use for the production of all products, as well as their transformations. Within these tours, we can appreciate that each village maintains different work techniques, forms of collective organization, difficulties and challenges and regional costumes that identify each town. Between the visitor and / or tourist, these experiential experiences are created that leave deep memories and reunions with our ancestors.

Another great contact that we have is with a bird-watching guide, John, who offers local half-day and day trips, as well as other tours around Chiapas.

As well, we have discovered some great walking trails that, if we are able, we would love to hike with you! There are lots of day trips that we share with you that will add great value to your stay in Chiapas.

My wife and I are both motorcyclists and rode from Canada to Mexico on our KTMs. Although everyone, of course, is very welcome at the "Casa del Silencio", we especially love hosting fellow motorcycle adventurers and sharing adventure stories. We have plenty of room for secure parking for your vehicle. There is a fairly well-equipped shop onsite and motorcycle travelers can have their chains serviced, tire pressures checked and topped up, and/or have other light repairs performed on a donation basis.

If you don´t have a vehicle, for about 70 pesos you can catch a taxi from San Cristóbal to the cabin, or for 7 pesos you can catch the "Colectivo", the van-bus system, that will bring you to within 400 meters of the property If you catch the Colectivo that says "Las Palmas" in the front window for 9 pesos you can get a ride right from the gate and back. Apparently, that one only runs about every 30 minutes, but the Colectivos that say "San Felipe" in the front window run every 10 minutes or so.

Accesso per gli ospiti
Guests have free access to the grounds of the property, and the gym. Additionally, there is a cotton string macrame hammock, bought almost 40 years ago in Honduras, hanging in the pine forest behind the main house that you are welcome to use! It is absolutely delicious to lay there, reading, meditating or just resting as the scent of the forest infuses your being and the diffused light washes over you!

Altre cose da tenere a mente
The cell service here is spotty.

There is no running water in the cabin. Guests can wash dishes in the provided wash station beside the cabin, in the outdoor laundry sink, or we can wash them for you in our home.

Although it can be very quiet here, there are rare occasions when the neighbors play their music, however, we have never had a day when it has been continuous. Our next door neighbors have dogs that sometimes pass through the property. As well, they have a pig, two chickens, and a rooster, who does make noise in the morning.
There is an amazing and reasonable restaurant just 200 meters down the hill that serves gourmet Chiapenco food. They serve breakfasts and meals till 6 pm. It is definitely recommendable. You will not believe the quantity and quality of food for the price you pay!

We're a Canadian couple who, three years ago sold our organic farm in British Columbia, Canada, where we grew much of our own food according to permaculture principles and hosted numerous people at our Airbnb guest house. Over the last couple of years, we have traveled to 12 countries and have stayed with countless Airbnb hosts, giving us a great perspective of what is out there and what is needed to provide guests with an extraordinary and comfortable stay. Two years ago we rode our motorcycles from Canada to Chiapas, Mexico in search of a new home, which we found on the south side of the Huitepec mountain on the outskirts of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. We are passionate about sustainable living, living in sync with our environment, and Living in Harmony with humanity. We follow the concepts of Permaculture farming whenever possible and embrace simplicity of life, focusing on building community and recognizing our connections to everyone and everything. We've hosted visitors from cultures around the world and are eager to get to know you too.
