Comfortable, quiet one bedroom cottage with full bath in one of Oakland's best neighborhoods. Walking distance to Grand and Lakeshore Avenue shopping districts, Lake Merritt, the Grand Lake Theatre and the best farmers market in the East Bay. 97 out of 100 walk score. Transit accessible. Street parking.
Comfortable, quiet backyard cottage (converted garage with Simmons BackCare queen mattress and full bath but no kitchen or living room) .
Folding table and chair, wireless internet, cable, DVD player, microwave, mini dorm fridge, coffee maker, electric kettle, iron and ironing board provided in room. Outdoor seating, deck with grill.
Works perfectly for family or guests of nearby residents who do not have room to spread out or those looking for privacy in one of the best neighborhoods in the East Bay.
Separate entrance in the Grand Lake neighborhood of Oakland just a block from two popular commercial corridors on Lakeshore and Grand Avenues. In addition to the cottage, guests are welcome to use the backyard for grilling, entertaining, or relaxing.
We are a busy family of four who live in the main house and are available to address any issues or answer any questions but can also provide privacy if desired. We've shared a bottle of wine with some guests and never met others.
Walking distance to the many shops and restaurants on Lakeshore and Grand Avenues (including two recently profiled in the NY Times: Camino and Boot & Shoe Service) as well as the year round Saturday Farmer's Market (9a-2p), Lake Merritt (a popular 5K jog/walk around), the art deco Grand Lake movie theater and the Rose Garden.
No car needed as there is easy access to all services and amenities within walking distance (our location has a walk score of 98) and you can easily get to San Francisco on the Transbay bus or casual carpool. There are two BART stations each about a mile away. Of course if you do have a car there is street parking and, with the exception of popular movie openings at the theatre down the street or the Saturday morning farmer's market, you can always park within a block of the cottage.
No living room or kitchen but does include a folding table and chair, wireless internet, Comcast cable, microwave, mini dorm fridge, coffee maker, electric kettle, iron and ironing board provided in room. Outdoor seating, deck with grill. Street parking.
Cottage is separate from the main house and accessible by its own entrance. Come and go on your own schedule, go to sleep early, stay up late, it's your own private hotel room in the neighborhood and at less cost. Backyard is shared with family but feel free to eat outside, use the grill, or enjoy the deck. Our only ask is that you respect our kids' bedtimes around 8:00 as their bedroom is just off the deck.
Hosts Adam and Amanda are welcoming, cheerful and accommodating. The cottage is small (as advertised) and has a super comfortable bed. Amenities like the mini-refigerator and electric coffee pot make it possible to have a cup and light breakfast---what a convenience. Small but clean, light, airy and good vibes.
We did not meet our host, but the directions and access to the cottage was fine.
The place was quaint, and acceptable for what we needed. The lighting at night getting to/from the back entrance was my only concern and opportunity for improvement! Adam was incredibly responsive and everything provided was up to par.
First, I must admit that I am a very particular person in terms of cleanliness, privacy, and accommodations and can be a bit of a spoiled “five star” princess. My stay at the cottage worked out well! I learned a lot about different kinds of comfort during my stay and actually purchased a little old house when I returned home with a similar backyard! This little rustic cottage is a sweet getaway, tucked in to the trees of a bricked garden. I had an extended stay of several months while on sabbatical in residence at Berkeley, which is a direct 20 minute bus ride from the cottage. So convenient!
Adam and the family are so very kind and responsive to any communication or expression of needs. The cottage is steps away from many FANTASTIC restaurants, taverns, and shops on Grand Ave. or Lakeshore, and the lovely neighborhood. However, the cottage itself feels more like it is situated in a park or little forest homestead. The bed is extremely comfortable, and I found the microwave/mini-refrigerator suited my needs, even for an extended stay (I like to eat out and socialize and rarely cook or eat at home). The cottage is very quiet and private in the evening, and during the day, save the instances of the children’s trampoline playtime or time working or retrieving items from the attached garage/storage/bike area. The little heater makes things cozy when things get chilly and the windows and bathroom skylight and tree cover make it comfortable and cool in the heat of summer.
I certainly recommend this cottage for folks who are looking for a little rustic respite in the middle of a fabulous neighborhood in Oakland. Lake Merritt is beautiful and transportation by bus is very easy to neighboring areas or to the BART train. It is certainly the most affordable and accommodating private space in the superb Lake Merritt neighborhood. Join Adam and family for a short stay or long term!
HOST - Adam and his wife were extremely flexible and welcoming to the area. My favorite part was their printed and laminated welcome guide with personalized description of their favorite restaurants and places to visit nearby. LISTING - Really cool cottage right in the back yard. It's a private and cozy place all to yourself. NEIGHBORHOOD - This was one of my favorite parts. It's only a block from Grand (full of unique restaurants) and about a 10 minute walk to Lake Merritt.
We spent 8 nights in Adam's cottage and loved the place. It was a quiet hideaway only minutes from downtown Oakland. Lake Merritt is only minutes away and restaurants in the area are great.
Both Adam and his cottage were great. I stayed for four nights during a trip to Oakland to take the California Bar Exam. The cottage was clean, quiet, and private. The mattress is comfortable; the shower has great water pressure. Adam responds promptly to text messages and is a very nice guy. Knowing that I was taking the bar, he brought me a beer one night. The neighborhood feels safe and is delightfully diverse. There are restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and a grocery store within walking distance just a few blocks away. The lake, which is circled by a running trail, also is a few blocks away. Adam happily pointed me toward places to eat and things to do. I highly recommend the cottage and hope to stay there on future trips to the Bay Area.
Young family with two small girls in the main house and another couple renting the lower half of the duplex. Cottage is separate in back. Work in local politics in the public and non-profit sectors. I am a cyclist and avid photographer, my wife likes to cook.
