Uncle Bruce's Hale Aloha is the Waikīkī' sanctuary of one of the area's last true native Hawaiian residents. Uncle Bruce Keaulani, traditional practitioner of Hawaiian healing and peace martial arts, was born and raised in Waikīkī and learned how to swim and surf in its balmy turquoise waters. Here, you are welcomed with the true Aloha spirit.

This 503 square foot, one bedroom/one bath apartment epitomizes the native Hawaiian surfer lifestyle....casual, comfortable, and ready to go! Aloha!

Lo spazio
Great location! Great home! Kind and caring host!" That's what our visitors have said about their stay at Uncle Bruce's Hale Aloha. Our Hawaiian-style hale (house) is conveniently located on Kalakaua Avenue, only a short walk from beautiful Waikīkī' beach! Bus lines are right out front and shopping, restaurants and banks are all in walking distance.

The one-bedroom, one-bath condo is spacious (540 sq ft, including an outdoor balcony, which receives the fresh cool breezes of Mānoa Valley), and there is a fully-stocked kitchen for your cooking pleasure. There are cooking supplies, abundant bath towels and a boogie board, cooler and other beach supplies, if you feel like being active. And, movies, local books, magazines and Hawaiian music cds, and a comfortable balcony, if you prefer to stay in.

The Kalakauan is a vintage hotel property, situated on land that was once stewarded by the Bishop Museum, Hawai`i's jewel, and is perfect for independent-minded travelers. It is simple, convenient and has an elevator that carries you to the 5th floor. The unit has been restored with marble counters and a gas stove. Most of the residents work in the area, so you won't feel like a visitor here. You will live like a local.

We will greet you, upon your arrival and will start you off with a welcome basket of fresh fruit (harvested from our valley garden, when possible), cookies, macadamia nut chocolates, delicious island juice and ice cold water. You may stock the refrigerator with more supplies from one of the many grocery stores nearby, at your leisure. Unlike in hotels, you don't have to pay for internet service; Wi-Fi access is free.

The most wonderful attribute of Uncle Bruce's Hale Aloha is that you will have access to an esteemed traditional native Hawaiian healer, teacher, surfer, and peace martial arts practitioner, who will treat you with kindness and respect and help you to intimately know what it means to have Hawai`i's most precious gift: the spirit of Aloha.

Interaction with guests

Juliet, our property manager, and Uncle Bruce both live close by and can help you with any questions or emergencies. Also, you are welcomed to meet local residents and study traditional healing with Uncle Bruce, at his dojo in Mānoa. There, you can learn lomilomi (Hawaiian spiritual massage), land-based practices, ho`oponopono and peace martial arts (Professor Henry Okazaki, Doctor Kaito David Nu`uhiwa Sr, and Aunty Mornnah Simeona, were among his illustrious teachers.)

Comfort and Cleanliness

- The team takes great care to ensure that your apartment is clean and welcoming. Please feel free to let us know if you need anything.
-There is a ceiling fan in the living room and a small air conditioner in the bedroom. Mountain breezes enter through the balcony door.
-DVD with movies and a CD player with Hawaiian music.
-Books on surfing and Hawai`i, for your enjoyment.
- Aloha is the way of life

Hale Aloha is located right at the entrance to Waikīkī', in the area referred to as `Ena Road. In the 1800s, this area belonged to a wealthy merchant, named John Liwaikalaniopuu ‘Ena, the son of a Chinese merchant, also called John ‘Ena, and Aliiwaihineopuna Kaikilanialiiwahineopuna, the daughter of a high chief of the Puna district on Hawaii. He was an illustrious he was a member of the House of Nobles and was decorated in 1888 by King Kalakaua. Following the overthrow of the kingdom in 1893, he was a member of the constitutional convention that set up the Republic of Hawaii.

In 1899 he became president of Inter-Island, which under his leadership became the largest navigation company in Hawaii and the precursor of Hawaiian Airlines.

This part of Kalakaua Avenue is known for its great location, and many local residents live close by.

One can walk, bike or bus, from right outside our front door, so a car is really not necessary on a day-to-day basis.

Location, location, location! What makes Hale Aloha unique is that it offers access to all of Waikīkī''s activities, without all of the congestion, as well as easy access to the rest of the island. It is an authentic community, which many local people call home, and is less congested than other parts of Waikīkī', yet close enough to be in the thick of things, if that is your desire.

As a child growing up in Waikīkī, my life was filled with much laughter, surfing and the true spirit of Aloha. My father was a native Hawaiian Beachboy (a 5th generation descendent of King Kamehameha), and my mother was the daughter of a Soto Buddhist priest from Niigata, Japan. Together, they raised me to love the ocean, love the land, love the rain and fresh water, love the birds and animals, and love one another. Hawaiians call this, "Aloha Kekahi i Kekahi," "Love One Another," and today, as a grandfather and father, I want to share that same spirit with all of you. In Waikīkī, I have created a space where you can live like a local. What are some things that I can't live without? 1) Akahai (Kindness); 2) Lōkahi (Unity); 3) `Olu`olu (Pleasantness); 4) Ha`aha`a (Humility); and 5) Ahonui (Patience). This is the meaning of Aloha. Let us spread the spirit of Aloha together. E komo mai!
