Canmore Mountain Getaway – Guest Binder

Canmore – The Early Years

David Thompson (1770-1857), the great explorer, was probably the first non-native person to visit the Bow Valley. He spent most of the winter of 1787 in this area. However, little non-native activity seems to have occurred in the greater Canmore area until approximately 1832. Around 1832 there was a great deal of trading occurring between the Peigan Indians and European fur traders. And in 1841 Sir George Simpson (Governor-in-chief of the Hudson’s Bay Company) passed through this valley on his way to what is now known as Banff. His native guide was a Cree Indian known as Peechee. Together these gentlemen visited Lake Minnewanka before crossing the Bow River travelling through the Rockies via what is now called “Simpson Pass.”

The first missionary to work in the Bow Valley was an English Wesleyan by the name of Rev. Robert Terrill Rundle. In the spring of 1840 Robert Rundle camped on the shores of the Bow River and explored all around the mountain that now bears his name. He lived in the area from 1840 until 1848. Rundle was well loved by the indigenous population of the Bow Valley and they honoured him by often saying: “Poor he came to us, and poor he went away, leaving us rich.” Rundle died in Scotland in 1854 after a lengthy illness. The Catholic Church was also active in the area with Jesuit Priests arriving from Oregon in the early part of the 19th century.

The North West Mounted Police (NWMP) arrived in Calgary in 1875 and immediately built a fort. It was called “Fort Calgarry.” In Gaelic “Calgarry” means clean running water. The first NWMP detachment established in Canmore occurred in 1883. The barracks, that remain standing to this day, were constructed in 1892.

With the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) – general economic development increased at a substantive rate. The non-native population of the Bow Valley also increased dramatically. From 1870 to 1885 there was also an increase in industrial activity. Lime was being mined in the Kananaskis region, timber was being harvested throughout the valley and coal was about to be discovered. What is now the Lafarge Canada cement kiln was first established as a cement plant in 1906.

In 1884 Canmore became a CPR town. There was a small depot used by the CPR at this spot. This “divisional point” was situated exactly 68 miles west of Calgary. An executive of the railway chose Canmore’s name. Donald Smith was of Scottish decent and wanted to honour the memory of King Malcolm of Canmore, Scotland. King Malcolm defeated the usurper Macbeth and reigned as King from 1057 until 1093. *Canmore is a Celtic word that literally means “big head”. Figuratively, it means very intelligent.

The Canmore Nordic Centre Provencal Park

The Canmore Nordic Centre (CNC) is a spectacular facility for both winter and summer sports. During the winter months it is a world-class cross-country ski facility with a huge number of groomed trails catering to skiers of all abilities. In the summer months it is a wonderful place to ride a mountain bike. Once again, there are trails for all ability levels and the trails are well marked. It is difficult to get lost and the degree of difficulty for each trail is clearly indicated. It is also important to note that both cross country skis and mountain bikes can be rented from Trail Sports – the bike / ski shop conveniently located on site. The CNC is situated above the Town of Canmore on the south side of the valley. It is the main training venue for both the Canadian National Cross Country Ski Canadian Team and the Canadian National Biathlon Ski Team.
