This artsy escape is a surprise in this extreme NorCal mountain town with an elevation of 3,600 feet. The small town has modern conveniences with a 50’s appeal. Just four blocks from town the house is on a quiet lane tucked near the end of the street. Inside Light airy chic decor is punctuated with technology. Pluck an apple from the backyard tree unlock your private gate and lounge by the creek while you enjoy wide open vistas with 7,836 foot mount Burney ever looming in the horizon.

Lo spazio
Burney is an outdoorsman’s paradise famous for its world class fly fishing I can hook you up with an expert guide or tell you where they’re biting. Just 10 minutes from town is McArthur Burney state park where Teddy Roosevelt proclaimed the waterfall to be the 8th wonder of the world but word of this under explored extreme NorCal locale is getting out because last year our beloved waterfall was chosen by the Travel Chanel as one of the world’s 8 best ‘hidden waterfalls’. I can provide ‘secret’ directions to enter the park (free of charge) along the PCT-Pacific Crest Trail where you’re likely to bump into hikers who are are halfway between Mexico and Canada on this iconic 2,650 mile trail. Forty-five minutes south and you’re at Lassen National Park and if you’re fit and want a challenge take the day to ascend 10,463 feet and marvel at views all the way to Nevada. No need to drive to Reno to gamble the town has the Pit River Casino with live music and the ‘loosest slots’ in California. As an avid explorer myself I have scads of adventures from remote natural hidden hot springs to little known waterfalls where you can witness the thrill local freestyle cliff jumpers doing ‘gainers’ into shimmering spring fed pools. For a once in a lifetime experience I can hook up my guests with a local pilot for a birds eye view of wind turbines and even Lake Shasta. For below ground wonders there are several caves in the area where you can go spelunking including remote Lava Beds National monument where the last Native American War played out a land which in WW II became Japanese internment camps. Of course this is also the land of Ishi the last of his Yahi tribe. All around Burney Native American lore mixes with old west history, a place so unique that some locals don’t think we’re in California anymore you will see proclamations through bumper stickers and signs that in fact you have entered the Great State of Jefferson. No matter what you call this part of California it is remote definitely off the beaten track but rife with fun and adventure. Please note the back bedroom is not a dedicated bedroom, but is a fold out futon with micro-fiber bedding ordered specifically to fit and it's in the hall linen closet. Also, because the space is perfect for pets (fenced front and back yard) I have decided to open it up to pet owners with a $50 fee.

Accesso per gli ospiti
The house has parking in front of the driveway, with access right through the front door.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
The town of Burney was in it’s heyday in WW II when luminaries like Bing Crosby would come and perform out at the old Clark Creek Lodge. The town is at an area of California known as the ‘four corners’ where hwy 89 and 299 meet. Hwy 299 runs from the famous Hwy 1’s Pacific Coast near Eureka and runs to Nevada and Hwy 89 starts in Oregon and goes all the way to Reno. The territory even goes into the most uninhabited corner of California Modoc County. It’s known among Californians as ‘Big Sky Country’. It’s scenery was the backdrop for the 1980’s hit Stephen King movie ‘Stand By Me’ where you can still drive down an old dirt road and go to the actual ‘Stand By Me Bridge’, and most recently the backdrop for Reese Witherspoon’s portrayal of Cheryl Strayed’s memoire ‘Wild’ about her epic hike of the 2,650 mile PCT or Pacific Crest Trail which touches both Hwy 89 and 299. It’s also home of the nearby McArthur Burney State Park which has one of the Travel Chanel’s 8 world’s best ‘secret’ waterfalls where you can actually hike to the source of the subterranean springs which runs beneath the creek and where it feeds the waterfall simultaneously underground giving it the dramatic appearance of both plunging and spouting out of the face of a cliff. As the water emanates from melting snow the pool beneath the springs is sapphire blue and worth a bracing dip on a hot day. If you want warmer waters to swim or boat follow the creek to Lake Britton where you can rent a boat or kayak and waterski this lightly trafficked lake and even catch a Bald Eagle where the raptors nest and dive down for trout. And speaking of trout well then you’ve probably heard of Hat Creek also located in Burney and world famous for the fly fishing. At night if you want a little excitement we even have our very own casino named after the tribe that runs it the ‘Pit River Casino’ often gets out of towner’s who drive the hour off of Interstate 5 for the ‘loosest slots. Uh-Oh...the secret is out!

Ontario Ave where my home is located is a modest home in a super safe and quiet neighbourhood four easy walking blocks to town past well kept tidy homes and as most the homes are owner occupied it’s a nice mixture of families and retirees. If you’re going to ‘live like a local’ this is the house for you. My home in particular is coveted for the big green backyard with the best unobstructed view of Mount Burney combined with the direct access to the creek which you almost always have to yourself and you will see why everyone on the block loves my casually elegant mountain escape.

I’m a seasoned globe trotter and writer who adores cities like London and Paris but since moving from the SF Bay Area to Northeast California 18 months ago and quickly became an aficionado of the history and outdoor adventures right out my own front door. Being a professional writer I am able to ‘take the show on the road’ but love that Burney is my home base. I can walk to town in 5 minutes and watch a first run movie in a theatre that opened in WW II, or in 10 minutes I can be on the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail. It was a big change going from urban living to this remote enigmatic extreme NorCal locale, a land of fresh water springs (both hot and cold) uncrowded lakes, trails, waterfalls, and volcanoes (I did a full moon summit of 10,463 Mt Lassen sponsored by the National Park last August). Burney and this entire area of Northeast California (sometimes referred to as the ‘State’ of Jefferson) is steeped in Old West, Gold Rush and Native American lore (the last ‘Indian’ War with the Modoc’s is located in Lava Beds National Monument is just 3 hours away). With extra time not spent commuting in traffic I get to expand my horizons like taking a crochet class or doing something adventurous like taking a private plane to see Shasta County from the air, spelunking in lava tubes. I even attended a local film and painstakingly remodeled my home. With all my knowledge and my home looking elegant and chic I want to travel more and when I travel share my home and knowledge with fellow Airbnb members!

Durante il tuo soggiorno
As this is my beloved residence I am not in town when it’s rented out, but I am a travel writer with a plethora of knowledge and local connections. I am more than happy to help plan your adventure and happy to be a resource before during and after via text or emails and sometimes even phone. I have a large fenced backyard and fenced front yard and have decided to try allowing guests with dogs and seeing how it works out, but there is a $50 additional pet fee.
