Altre cose da tenere a mente
The local attractions give a good idea of what Poland, and Mazury in particular, is all about.
The regional town of Olsztyn is worth a visit. The Old Town, St Jacob's Cathedral and the Bishops' Palace are pretty impressive and the Planetarium ( (Website hidden by Airbnb) and Multimedia Centre (Website hidden by Airbnb) are good for a rainy day also newly built waterpark is situated there.
The Folk Architecture Museum and Ethnographic Park - Skansen in Olsztynek is a collection of 60+ relocated and replica buildings from all over the region set in a large park. It is a really good day out. A number of special events are organised there in the summer. ( (Website hidden by Airbnb)
Horse-riding is available at Leśniczówka Jednorózec which is down the next turn-off the main road from Olsztynek after the Marózek turn. English is spoken. ( (Website hidden by Airbnb)
In Butryny, just off the same road (no. 58) a bit further on, is an activity park with climbing, repelling (sliding down ropes from trees), paint-balling, bouncy castles, quad bikes, etc. ( (Website hidden by Airbnb)
The Warmia Park Hotel in Pluski has a spa and waterpark with waterslides, climbing wall, pools and other facilities at reasonable prices. (Website hidden by Airbnb)
Kayaking in large (practically unsinkable) double kayaks is good fun. The best local trip is from Swaderki to Kurki along the river Maróz. You move with the current through rivers and a lake. Marcin Zega offers an inclusive trip with kayak hire and pick up at very reasonable rates. (Email hidden by Airbnb) There is also kayaks, water bicycles and other boats available for hire in Marozek to use on the local lake.
Cycling trails are plentiful through the local forests and they are traffic-free and easy. Longer rides are fine on quiet country roads. One highly recommended route is in the Great Lakes area from Gizycko.
Walks are available throughout the beautiful forests and many are marked trails. Sometimes the simplest are the best - the lakeside walks from Marózek (south to the beach at Wiatraki and north to Swaderki) are delightful. Another is the path along the Łyna river and Kiernoz lakes from Brzeźno Łyńskie to Kurki. Whilst you are walking you may spot locals and Polish tourist with baskets wild mushroom picking particularly in late summer and early autumn. This one of Poles favourite passtimes.
There is a lovely lake beach at the Wiatraki hotel - a mile walk through the forest from the log house (or 2 mile drive). There is also a bar and playground there and good, home made lunches there for a reasonable price (they need to be ordered in advance). There is also a small spa there.
There is a fish farm in Swaderki (better than it sounds). It is well known for its wonderful fish and chips. You can fish - here or in the local lakes or buy freshly caught fish. Trout, carp, sturgeon, tench, whitefish, pike, bream, vendace and perch are on the menu. You can also buy very resonably priced fishing licence from there.
The local bar/shop in Marózek is very good - you have to go to the window to order and they shout out your name when it's ready. They are also good for gluten free food options and beer. It specialises in made to order home smoked sausage, ham and fish.
The Restauracja z Zielonym Piecem (Green Oven restaurant) in Olsztynek is good for traditional Polish food; the cafe in the main square (Stara Ksiegarnia) is good for less elaborate meals and has lovely cakes. There is also wonderful small place called Konfitura oposite the castle serving beautiful cakes and luxury ice creams.
There are small shops in Marózek and Kurki but the supermarkets are in Olsztynek (Biedronka or Netto).

Attractions further a field include spectacular Malbork Castle, the largest brick castle in the world and an undeniably impressive structure, the Cathedral complex in Frombork which includes the Copernicus Museum, the Great Masurian Lakes (Mamry and Śniardwy) and the kayak routes around, the Elbląg Canal with its remarkable inclined planes where boats are carried up and down hill on rails, and the Cathedrals and Bishop's Palace in Orneta and Lidzbark Warmiński.
For those interested in Second World War history there is interesting Hitler's headquarters Ketrzyn where Hitler's failed assassination took place.
