Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

"State Library Victoria archives reveal that Liverpool Street was originally known as Juliet Terrace, known for “disgraceful haunts of vice, ruffianism and squalor”!
Over 100 years later, Liverpool Street’s reputation has been transformed as one of Melbourne’s chic-est lane ways.
With Chinatown at the north end and contemporary culture abuzz at the other, it’s a go-to destination for your next drinking and dining adventure.

Double Happiness
Double Happiness is a dimly lit hole-in-the-wall bar decked out in kitsch. The tunes tend towards old school hip hop anthems, espresso mart

Hochi Mama
Open for lunch and dinner, Hochi Mama is a Vietnamese taste sensation with a lip-smacking menu full of the good stuff. Try baos, soft shell crab banh mi, crispy pork belly, Saigon grilled chicken and a classic pad thai or tom yum soup, curry and rotis. Wash it down with a bright and fresh cocktail or a beer on tap. Street art daubed walls add to the colourful vibe.

Rice Paper Scissors
A hawker-style shared-eating spot, eating with your hands is recommended, nay, expected at Rice Paper Scissors. Staff will happily recommend vegie and gluten-free options, but the protein packs a punch. Try delicious Thai kingfish ceviche, Crying Tiger wagyu beef, BBQ Balinese Prawns and the must-order Betel Leaf Miang Kham, with octopus, watermelon, crispy pork belly and chili caramel sauce. Book a crowd of mates in for a Yum Cha lunchtime session on Saturdays and Sundays this winter for $55 all you can eat.

Shimbashi Japanese Soba & Sake Bar
Famed for its soba noodles, made on site with flour milled from Tasmanian buckwheat groats, Shimbasi offers a fresh and nutritious Japanese menu. Choose a winter warmer soba soup with mushroom and wild vegie or tempura, or try a soba noodle lunch set with dumplings & chicken fillet served with sushi & salad. There’s an extensive sake list of hot and cold varieties, plum wine and fruit-based sake liquers, as well as an all-Japanese beer list.

SPQR
SPQR is a boisterous wood-fired pizzeria with its own DJ booth pumping out tunes all week long. With a split menu of red pizzas all made with premium san marzano tomatoes, or white-based pizzas focused on cheese, everything here is oven fresh and moreish. The restaurant walls are a constantly changing street art gallery, so you’ll find a new scene to Instagram every time you visit.

New Gold Mountain
A homage to Melbourne’s 1850s gold rush and the areas notoriety as a den of iniquity, New Gold Mountain finds old-world Shanghai glamour and decadent boudoir style across two levels, Red and Green. Green is good for smaller groups gathered around tables, while red invites more intimate tête-à-têtes. Innovative cocktails are the thing. Try a zesty New Silk Road or Red Dragon with fig bitters and toasted cinnamon, or the bar staff will even mix you something bespoke.

Melbournalia
The place to shop for Melbourne-made products and themed wares, Melbournalia is guaranteed to give you the warm fuzzies about our city. It’s an excellent place for gifts for ex-pats or to take to friends overseas. Choose from books, homewares, jewellery, t-shirts, tea-towels, ceramics, cards and toys.

Classic Comics
A Melbourne institution, Classic Comics has been giving the people what they want since 1993, and they’re not about to quit any time soon. Renowned for their customer service, knowledge and diligence in tracking down that obscure item, you’ll find an exhaustive array of comics, trade paperbacks, games and toys.

Play Music DVDs
Another cult store with legendary customer service, Play Music DVDs has an abundance of rare, obscure and classic film and music titles. Get schooled in things about movies you didn’t know, and discover plenty of reasons for return visits."
A LANEWAY LOVERS GUIDE TO LIVERPOOL STREET
Posted 12 July 2018 in Bars, Culture, Food, Places, Shopping

"Liverpool Street was originally known as Juliet Terrace, with neighboring Crossley Street getting the moniker Romeo Lane, thanks to their proximity to the old Shakespeare Hotel – one of Melbourne's first watering holes. But with one foot in Chinatown and the other in Melbourne's great Theatre district, Liverpool Street feels more like old Shanghai with a touch of Shakespeare from mother England.

Sip on signature cocktails and soak up the opium-den atmosphere of New Gold Mountain, an upstairs bar inspired by Melbourne's gold rush-era Chinatown. Alternatively, head downstairs for an after work brew amid the Chinese propaganda posters at Double Happiness. Keep wandering and take your pick of everything from sake and soba, modern Chinese dining, or South East Asian snacks and shared plates. On the hunt for gifts? Hit up Melbournalia, for bespoke souvenirs and cute city-centric designs, or pop into Classic Comics for um, well… comics."
VISIT VICTORIA

Liverpool Street is a lane-way, it runs one-way from Bourke Street through to Little Bourke Street. It is well lit, and frequently populated with lots of passing foot traffic, giving it a safe and busy vibe due to some small but great bars and fantastic restaurants. Wood fired pizza to Asian Fusion, Double Happiness, New Gold Mountain, Longrain to Cafe Le Petite Bourke (for daily homemade French pastries and coffee).
