Located on a beautiful boulevard in the historic Old Oaks neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, this is a shared home listing for my spacious 2400 sq ft American Foursquare. Meaning I stay in the home too. See my other listings if you need the entire house

**Note: If you book through this listing, I will be staying in the home during your stay. If your party is large enough (9+ people), I can give up the master bedroom for the couch, but that will have to be worked out on an individual basis.

If you want to rent the entire home and have my dogs and I stay elsewhere, the listing is here:

If you want to rent individual bedrooms, visit my profile.

My home is a spacious, fully remodeled with modern updates, 2400 square foot American Foursquare located on a beautiful boulevard in the historic Old Oaks neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. You can look this up and coming hood up on the web. There's nothing like it!

Centrally located off the Livingston Corridor on the Near East Side (a few miles SE of Broad and High, the epicenter of Columbus), Old Oaks is Columbus's first and most well-preserved streetcar suburb. The neighborhood is famous not just for its architecture and history, but also for being one of the last neighborhoods in America where we know our neighbors. Each Wednesday, a different neighbor hosts a social hour on their porch and close to 30 neighbors stop by to catch up with one another. So bizarre is this in modern America that we were featured in the Washington Post for it*.

My home is central to most attractions in town, but is within walking distance to Nationwide Children's Hospital. It neighbors German Village, Old Town East, Franklin Park and downtown, and is a short distance to the Short North, the OSU campus, Grandview and other central neighborhoods. Also a short bike ride from CCAD and Columbus State if you happen to be visiting either of those campuses.

The home features 4 bedrooms, and the following bed options:

1 queen size bed
1 queen size futon
2 full size beds
2 full size futons
1 couch
1 bay/reading window with memory foam mattress
2 queen size air mattresses available upon request

These alone can sleep up to 18 people. If you are down with floor space or air mattresses, you could easily sleep over 20 here (numbers of this magnitude will require significant advance notice and a discussion between both parties). This listing is for those who need the space, but not the privacy.

If you do not like my rates, please put American social norms aside and negotiate with me. I'd rather book you than not and the worst I can say is "no."

The guest bathroom features a standing tiled shower and a jetted whirlpool tub if you need to wind down from a day on the town. The kitchen is available for your use as well if you prefer to dine in rather than take in some local cuisine from one of our many popular restaurants.

There is a large porch that overlooks the boulevard for you to enjoy your morning coffee. You should know that I own a large dog. He is restricted to his den when I'm not home and the first floor at all other times. You will never come in contact with him if that is your desire.

In addition to the lovely home, by booking with me, you also gain access to an insider's view of Columbus. I have lived here since 1999 and have friends who have lived here their whole lives who comment that I know more about the city than they ever knew possible. I am well tuned-in to events going on in the city, and can recommend restaurants or attractions to suit any taste. If you like to explore, I can show you parts of this town most don't even know exist (you'll see one such area just by staying with me).

Best of luck on your search and have a lovely stay in Columbus, whether you choose my Old Oaks home or not!

Accesso ospiti

All common areas and 2nd floor bedrooms. The master bedroom is only available to parties of 9 or more by special request.

Interazione con gli ospiti

I will interact with my guests as much or little as they like. I am an expert on all things Columbus. Some former guests call me Mr. Columbus! I can guide you around town to the hottest spots, best restaurants, trendiest restaurants (not always the best!), etc. And if you need a tour guide, we can make that happen. Brewery tours, city tours, neighborhood tours, home tours, historic tours, I can build'em all at your request.

Luke did a great job of accommodating our group. Communication was quick and clear, which became important when our group size changed at the last minute. The house was clean, inviting, and characterful. We even enjoyed hanging out with Luke's other guests (we were all in town for the same conference). I highly recommend staying here if you want to stay close to downtown/the convention center but don't want to deal with the busy nightlife or isolate yourself in a sterile hotel room.

From the moment we stepped in the door to the moment we left, Luke was extremely hospitable and friendly. If you are unfamiliar with the city, Luke has developed one of the best guides to Columbus, quite honestly it should be published. The house is stunning and is perfect for large groups and most of all we felt at home during our stay.

Risposta di Luke:
Kyle, it was a pleasure to host your group and spend some time chatting about music and Columbus. We need to get our twin-barking dogs together for a play date, haha!

Luke was a wonderful host, he had the house extremely clean prior to our arrival. The house had plenty of room to house our party and we were all surprised by how good the renovations were, the pictures do not do this space justice. Parking for the location was street parking but, it was NOT a busy street and we were always within 10 yards of the house. Our group was visiting for the Arnold classic and we utilized the kitchen a lot, it got very crowded in their very quickly. Our favorite room was the living room and the guest bathroom, both were extremely comfortable and the bathroom made you feel like you were in a 5 star hotel. I will definitely re-book this location for future stays in Columbus Ohio.

Luke's house was just as advertised. Luke went out of his way to accommodate our large party (14 family members) traveling for the weekend to go to the OSU football game. Since Luke has a large dog (Dexter), and some of our party were either sensitive to or somewhat afraid of dogs, we needed to communicate specifically about how to manage Dexter, who stayed in the house in his own room. Once we understood the environment, and Luke's communications were key in helping us to best understand, we all enjoyed our stay in Luke's house, and appreciated his attentiveness and follow through. We also enjoyed the neighborhood, and ate at a local restaurant (Black Creek Bistro, 1.5 miles away) and enjoyed sitting on the front porch during the nice fall weather.

Risposta di Luke:
Hi Jim, thanks so much for being great guests. I'm glad you enjoyed the restaurant; it's one of my favorites. Dexter can get excited with so many people around and you guys did great with him. I really appreciate it. If you ever make this trip again, don't hesitate to reach out.

The prior positive feedback on this rental is puzzling... First I must say that Luke's neighborhood is not the idyllic, quaint, historic neighborhood that he describes. The homes are beautiful, but the the surrounding streets are straight hood. Coming from St. Louis we have a high threshold for urban decay. This sadly felt like a neighborhood we might try to avoid. There's absolutely nothing around it, no bars, restaurants, etc. Our group was informed that walking the streets at night is not safe. We found that Papa John's wouldn't even deliver pizza to our street after dark! So if you want to eat at the house, think ahead. Before we even arrived the tone for our stay started when I received an 'about the house' message from Luke the very day of our arrival. This information is not on his listing. We probably wouldn't have even stayed one night had he been more forthcoming about his rescue dog, Dexter. In Luke's 'house rules' he instructed us not to approach it, or make direct eye contact with it or pet it. Upon arrival, I did find the dog to be pretty scary despite being a total dog person. He also shared a tidbit of information about how he had to get rid of his other dog because it bit 6 people. Knowing this fact only added to the unease about his current dog. The sour smell of dexter permeated the entire downstairs so there wasn't any hanging out in the living room or kitchen. Besides, the dog would just bark in his holding area until we disappeared. As far as the bedrooms go, they are minimally appointed. No lamps, one bedroom had a metal folding chair, one bedroom was full of cardboard boxes and the mattresses were very uncomfortable. A foam topper has been added to try to help but it looked as though a twin was used for a full size bed and then another piece had been cut to fill in the gap. I got to sleep on the seam. I found myself awake by 4am checking every 5 minutes to see if I could get up to start getting ready to leave for the day. The sheets/bedded were slippery polyester so it made the slant effect of the bed even worse. The outlet in my room sparked when I tried to plug my phone in so that was a little scary; I used one on the other side of the room. One night got a little hot (along with rancid dog smell creeping into our room) so I opened the window and there was no screen on it so bugs flew in all night. We were in town for work (4 of us total but only 3 at one time). Long 12 hour days. We pretty much just wanted to come back to a calm, relaxing environment. Between the dog, the late night west coast NBA final game with buddies, and the beds this was far from relaxing....

Risposta di Luke:
TL;DR: When literally dozens of other people raved about their great experiences, and you’re the only one who had a bad experience, take a hard look at yourself, cuz you’re the problem. If I never get another guest like Emily and Doug, I’ll be better for it. Easily some of the worst guests I have ever had the misfortune of hosting, and definitely the worst through airbnb (and I had some partiers do $1200 in damages to my home!). Communication skills = non existent. They barely exchanged a word with me. I’ve had better communication with guests I didn’t even meet in person than with these two. They claim a high tolerance for "urban decay", but, simply put, these were uppity white folk in town for a bourgeoisie golf tournament so they could sell overpriced sunglasses to other rich white people. If we’ve learned anything about white people in St. Louis this year, it’s that they’re racist as fuck. If you dislike the idea of having black people nearby, then yes, my house might shock you as, GASP, I have black neighbors! Gays live across the street! A multiracial couple who had the nerve to marry one another live a few houses down, oh my! Personally, being that I'm not a bigot, that's what I love about my neighborhood. My positive reviews are only puzzling if you are the worst common denominator of the American people. If you are what is wrong with this country today, my house may not be the place for you. They left this review on the very last day possible to avoid getting any feedback left on their own profile. That should tell you something. They fear what I might have had to say about them. Any detail you could misconstrue, these two misconstrued it. This review borders on and maybe crosses over into libelous territory. Far from being dangerous, my dog is a sweetheart. One of the people in their party even played with him. Any former guests reading this review are laughing out loud. As any dog owner knows, any instructions given to people are more for the person than the dog. People don’t know how to act around dogs so sure, I take precautions. That’s being responsible. I did have a rescue dog that I had to give up. He was abused, beaten and used as a bait dog prior to my taking him in. I worked with him for three years before I came to the hard conclusion that I couldn't help him any more. It was heartbreaking, one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, and these fools' attitude toward such a thing should be all the evidence you need as to the type of people they are. The “about the house” guide they refer to is my city guide (it’s mentioned in my listings). It does contain info about the house, like which remote does what, the wifi info, how the security system works, etc. And things like “please recycle” and so on, but more than anything, it’s page after page of recommendations as to what to do in the city. Most of my suggestions are within a mile of my house. The dog notes they mention were delivered via airbnb message due to their awful arrival times that I was nice enough to accommodate (they didn’t get in until 1am, by which time I was sound asleep, having to work in the morning). But then, I was awoken anyway because they didn’t follow any of the instructions I gave them to keep my dog from doing his job of alerting me to people entering my home in the middle of the night. Hey, guess what, the music room that my listing clearly says you can’t have access to unless necessary? It’s full of music! Every bed in my home is listed in my listing as well. The music room bed is a queen sized futon. I told you that. I’ve slept on every sleeping surface in this house and I find them all to be comfortable, but I wasn’t raised with a silver spoon in my mouth, so I admit maybe I have a skewed perspective. I encourage you to read my other reviews because this one, like the worldview of its author, is garbage. They literally complain about all the things my other guests rave about; truly fascinating.

I'm a professional writer and marketer located in Columbus, OH. I am originally from WV, but moved here many moons ago to attend The Ohio State University and have since made this my home. I know nearly everything there is to know about Columbus, and if you're looking for more than a place to lay your head, I'm the host you want when visiting this city.

I spend most of my spare time reading, writing, running, dancing or riding my bicycle. I also enjoy a good happy hour and live shows.
