Tortoise Terrace is tucked away at the back of The Storytellers organic farm. The main sleeping tent boasts a double bed, while the front room has a sleeper couch and can be used as a lounge or an extra bedroom. All necessary bedding and extra blankets are provided. In front of the tent is a shaded wooden picnic bench, perfect for dining outside on those hot summer nights. The kitchen and bathroom, in the wooden house, are all gas powered, as is the fridge.

Lo spazio
Tortoise Terrace is situated at the base of a majestic sandstone cliff, home to nesting Rock Kestrels and Rock Doves. At night, swooping owls silently silhouette against the night sky as they hunt for rodents in the bushes around the unit. If your looking for a quiet, off-grid and wi-fi free detox from city life, this is the place for you!

Accesso per gli ospiti
Guests will have access to all amenities on the farm Vleiplaas, including the world-class bouldering and climbing areas on De Pakhuys guest farm, the hiking trails and the swimming holes. Access into the neighbouring CapeNature wilderness reserves is strictly by permit only. These can be purchased from several outlets in the valley including The Storytellers and De Pakhuys, as well as from CapeNature directly. All climbing, regardless of where it is taking place, is by permit only. These permits can be obtained from the aforementioned outlets.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
Summer: as The Storytellers organic farm is based in a semi-arid region, we experience extremely hot and dry summers with temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Sun protection and hydration are essential. Our hottest months are December, January, February and stretching into March.
Winter: the farm is in a winter rainfall region and experiences sporadic downpours. Temperatures seldom drop below 1 degree Celsius (33 Fahrenheit). Our coldest, wettest months include May, June and July.
Autumn and Spring: these are by far the best seasons to visit the farm, bringing with them a magical mix of hot days and cold nights. There is little rain, but enough cloud for magical sunsets. Springtime (August, and September) sees the eruption of wildflowers throughout the region, while autumn (March and April) brings welcome relief to the intense heat of summer, celebrated by the emergence of countless butterflies.

Clanwilliam, Western Cape, Sudafrica

The Storytellers organic farm is nestled in the Agter-Pakhuis valley, about 27km (17 miles) outside of Clanwilliam in the Western Cape. Overlooked by the majestic Pakhuis mountains - the oldest formations in the Cederberg range - the valley is a meeting point of four different vegetation biomes, giving the surrounding hills a unique blend of fynbos and succulent plant species, as well as hundreds of traditional medicinal and 'magical' plant types. Home to the !Xam and Khoisan bushpeople of old, this part of the Cederberg is home to what has been described as one of the most dense collections of ancient rock art in the world.
The nearest grocery store is in Clanwilliam town. Make sure you stock up on all food provisions and food in Clanwilliam before completing the final stretch of the journey to the farm.

Our nearest restaurant is Travellers Rest, about 7km (4.5 miles) away from The Storytellers, serving a mix of traditional Cederberg dishes and contemporary fare. Clanwilliam town itself is home to several restaurants and pubs serving everything from gourmet traditional dishes in upmarket settings to rowdy beer'n'burger spots that make up the bulk of the town's nightlife.
For those seeking a bit of culture and history, the Clanwilliam hosts the Ou Tronk (Old Gaol) Museum, which explores the humble beginnings of the town (the seventh oldest in South Africa) and how its roots intertwined with the Rooibos tea industry. Other attractions include the Strassbergers Shoe Factory (the oldest shoe factory in South Africa); the Rooibos Tea House (the only tea house in the world dedicated only to Rooibos tea); and the Ramskop flower gardens (home to countless species of rare and common wildflowers, succulents and medicinal plants).
Looking slightly further afield and deep into the mountains one will find the historic Moravian villages. These self-sustaining communities were established in the mid-1800's and haven't changed much since. While long distances on rough gravel roads make these destinations a little harder to get to, each village - all nested in beautiful mountain settings - has its own magic and stories to share.

I am a former journalist from Johannesburg who cashed in all his chips in 2011 and purchsed land in the Cederberg with my wife Tracy. Here we offer accommodation, while my wife has her own range of natural skin care and beauty products. Together we raise our two daughters in this beautiful valley.

Durante il tuo soggiorno
Either JP or Tracy will be on hand to assist guests with any and all queries. We supply firewood for the water boilers, as well as gas for the cookers and fridges. Should any of these run out, simply let us know and we will refill as soon as possible. As all of our units are off-grid and wi-fi free, we have set up a guest services office at the The Storytellers main house where guests can access the internet, charge any electrical devices that need mains electricity and, for long-term guests, freeze any food for later in their stay.
