Northern Lights/ Aurora Watch:

Book a tour online with NorthStar, Yellowknife Outdoor, B Dene Adventures + others. Tours tend to take guests out of town and guide them them for the peek aurora times. However it is still possible to see the aurora before and after the tour times.

Otherwise: Check to see aurora + weather forecasts . The nightly aurora re-play can give you a good idea of what you might expect. You need both good aurora + weather to see the aurora.

It needs to be clear and dark to see aurora. October, November, December are often the cloudy months in Yellowknife
Summer is not aurora time as there are  24 hours of daylight
You need to have some clear sky as aurora is above the clouds
Aurora season is best from August to mid October
And again from mid-December to mid-April

Be prepared to stay up all night + sleep much of the day
You will be on the night shift !Our special aurora breakfast is at 11am for your sleeping convenience. The longest night is Dec 21 during winter equinox - 6pm- 7am. Whereas the shortest nights in April + August are about 9pm- 5am .

Aurora is an unpredictable, natural phenomena. It can  last one minute or a few hours - It can be very faint or quite bright

You are advised to look out the windows of the house every 10 minutes. Better yet, take walks outside around the neighbourhood then come back + warm up. It is better to walk and stay warmer than to stand still for too long and get cold
Bring your warmest gear - long underwear, woolen or feather down clothing. Sometimes we can provide some warmer clothing for a very minimal fee - Parka, pants, boots, mitts, hat, neck warmer.

Some of the literature states that the full-moon is not a good time to see aurora. But then there are other people who disagree with this - thats me ! Online you will see good photos of aurora with the full moon in the picture.

The aurora is usually not quite as colourful as the photos you see. Photos are more sensitive to colour than the human eye and can be enhanced

Just an example of how difficult it might be to see aurora:
Once a guy came for 5 nights and every night was completely cloudy. Except for 15 minutes the final night when the clouds opened up and luckily there was aurora in the sky at that time
He was watching all night long  so his diligence paid off !
So good luck to you.
