We just came home from a wonderful 10 day stay at Jelena's property at Vela Luka on the Croatian island of Korcula. The property is very rurally located and private (it can't be seen from the road and has no immediate neighbours), which is without doubt part of it's beauty, peace and appeal - just make sure you have directions from Jelena, we had a SatNav and would never have found it without them! The property was very clean and well prepared when we arrived and was well-equipped with everything we needed. The solar power worked fantastically - we did a couple of loads of clothes washing and it didn't affect the power at all - we would never have known we were off-grid. The only down-side is it means that there is no air-conditioning - we didn't need it for the majority of the stay because there is a breeze that comes in off the bay but two nights were very close and very hot. The three sun terraces provided the perfect setting for alfresco dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the outside wood oven worked very well and was fun to use one evening. Make sure you use the spirals (outside) and plug-in diffusers (inside) for mosquitos - we didn't know about them and got ravaged on our first night, however, one message to Jelena and she told us what we needed and we got ourselves equipped. The noise of cicadas (from 7am to 7pm) can be quite intense as the house is in an olive grove, but that's the case on all the islands! The bay is not so far to walk to at all, less than 10 minutes there and maybe 10 minutes back as it's up hill, but not a challenging walk at all. We went morning and evening most days so that we weren't doing the uphill walk in the intense heat. The water is crystal clear and very clean - great for snorkelling. The water is very deep and there is no shallow water at all, but there are other bays and beaches nearby with shallower parts. There are so many beautiful places to visit on the island and all the views are breathtaking. Korcula old town (just under 1 hour away) has fantastic architecture, good restaurants and great snorkelling/swimming spots - we went three times! Lumbarda just along from the old town has a fantastic winery where we bought the best Grk and a phenomenal Cherry liqueur. Make sure you visit Gardina - it's only 5 minutes drive away from the villa and has a fantastic family-run restaurant with a beautiful sun-set bay view. Also, Martina Bok beach is very pretty and accessed via a walk through a beautiful wood. Korcula is well worth a visit and Jelena's villa in Vela Luka was a wonderful base to explore it from.

We spend a great time on this marvelous house surrounded by olive trees with a great view arround . We enjoyed the lovely sunsets from the terraces. The house is a zero energy project and run only by sun panels. Jelena is a great host, in all cases we needed support she was very helpfull and careing. We are looking forward to enjoy this place again :) sunny greetings from swizerland jakob

Jelena is an absentee landlord and was not present during our two week stay so we spoke through email and texts. The house is VERY tough to find and the GPS coordinates may not work in your GPS as they did not in ours (without converting them on ) and nothing is marked anywhere so better directions would be helpful before you arrive. The good: this is a very remote house and very quiet on a secluded end of Korcula island. The summer kitchen in the back yard is quite nice, as is the front patio. There is an amazing view from the house of the sea by day and the stars by night. There are 3 nice bedrooms and we were surprised to have a King-sized bed. Most amenities were in place. There is a great Konoba just a short walk down the road, usually with live music! The photos and description made it appear, to us, that it is an easy walk to the water but it is actually a strenuous 10 minute walk down a steep hill and a 20 minute very difficult walk back up. The main reason we rented this house was to easily access the water and go back and forth to the house throughout the day. In reality, I made the trip 2 times in 2 weeks and the others in my group did not even try past the 1/2 way point. We ended up driving to find some more accessible beach locations to swim at each day. The electricity in the house is solar powered, meaning if you use too much during the day; for example a load of laundry plus a hot shower, or using the dishwasher plus one other thing will mean there is no electricity in the night time until about 8:30 in the morning. We were not aware of this until we arrived. We had planned on keeping cool in the hot weather by using fans but they did not work all night long, so we had some uncomfortable night's sleep. The refrigerator did not keep food cold (more like a cooler than a refrigerator) but the freezer works fine. The internet worked fine for the first week but almost not at all the second week. For some, the spiral staircase could be difficult to navigate. You will want to have a car for this place as it is a good 10-15 minute drive to the nearest town. Housekeeping is a bag of clean linens dropped off at the 1/2 way point of our 2 week stay. The cleaning lady did come to help us try and get the internet working again and was most helpful.

Risposta di Jelena:
Dear Jeff, I'm sorry about the inconvenience, but I'm not on the island which is written on the site, because I rent my home, so I believe it would be very uncomfortable for you if me and my family were at the house too. That the house is very easily to found I heard from so many previous guests, so I was very surprised when I heard that you had problem with that. The beach is 205 m from the house and 50 above sea level. This is measurable from or any other map. So it is the walk to the beach as I described on page. House is built from eco friendly materials, it's self sufficient and solar powered. lt's actually written on Airbnb house rules, so of course there is no toaster, and of course you shouldn't bring and use your own fans, those are demands of ecco friendly house, hope you don't mind. After all list of amenities is on Airbnb page. Refrigerator broke, yes, sorry about that, we bought new one, immediately! The Internet provider is T-com with highest rate which you can get on the hill in Croatia - 25 Gb, with posssibility of adding more Gb, but sometimes by their fault, it doesn't work immediately. But it is solved now, they promissed. Cleaning is done before and after guests. In the mean time if you need cleaning service you should let us know. And after a week, the cleaning lady delivered clean linens, and did not need to clean the house, you should ask for it. But you are right it would be nice if she maked beds. It will be done so. Thanks for some of your nice comments, and I hope, after all, you did enjoy your adventurous stay in the nature. All the best, Jelena

It's a great pity that we have not had a chance to meet Jelena - she seems to be a great person as judged by her beautiful house. It's clean, comfortable, modern, spacious and full of light. The position is excellent - up on the hill with a great view but still you need just few minutes to go down to the sea to the almost private beach. We've been in the very beginning of October and have not meet a person there. Our favorite place was the terrace in front of the house - there we've spent all the time - from morning till late night - watching the sea, boats, the sun going down and the moon rising. It was a real magic. As for the shopping - the fresh fish, fruits and vegetables you can by in Vela Luka - just 10 minutes of drive from the house (the market is open from 7 till 12 o'clock in the morning but it's better to come not later than 9 a.m. :) To make a resume I would like to say that the place was so nice, cosy and peaceful that we didn't even want to go sightseeing ))). Jelena - thank you very much for everything!
