We just came home from a wonderful 10 day stay at Jelena's property at Vela Luka on the Croatian island of Korcula. The property is very rurally located and private (it can't be seen from the road and has no immediate neighbours), which is without doubt part of it's beauty, peace and appeal - just make sure you have directions from Jelena, we had a SatNav and would never have found it without them! The property was very clean and well prepared when we arrived and was well-equipped with everything we needed. The solar power worked fantastically - we did a couple of loads of clothes washing and it didn't affect the power at all - we would never have known we were off-grid. The only down-side is it means that there is no air-conditioning - we didn't need it for the majority of the stay because there is a breeze that comes in off the bay but two nights were very close and very hot. The three sun terraces provided the perfect setting for alfresco dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the outside wood oven worked very well and was fun to use one evening. Make sure you use the spirals (outside) and plug-in diffusers (inside) for mosquitos - we didn't know about them and got ravaged on our first night, however, one message to Jelena and she told us what we needed and we got ourselves equipped. The noise of cicadas (from 7am to 7pm) can be quite intense as the house is in an olive grove, but that's the case on all the islands! The bay is not so far to walk to at all, less than 10 minutes there and maybe 10 minutes back as it's up hill, but not a challenging walk at all. We went morning and evening most days so that we weren't doing the uphill walk in the intense heat. The water is crystal clear and very clean - great for snorkelling. The water is very deep and there is no shallow water at all, but there are other bays and beaches nearby with shallower parts. There are so many beautiful places to visit on the island and all the views are breathtaking. Korcula old town (just under 1 hour away) has fantastic architecture, good restaurants and great snorkelling/swimming spots - we went three times! Lumbarda just along from the old town has a fantastic winery where we bought the best Grk and a phenomenal Cherry liqueur. Make sure you visit Gardina - it's only 5 minutes drive away from the villa and has a fantastic family-run restaurant with a beautiful sun-set bay view. Also, Martina Bok beach is very pretty and accessed via a walk through a beautiful wood. Korcula is well worth a visit and Jelena's villa in Vela Luka was a wonderful base to explore it from.
