Each host has a time that will work into her/his schedule given these are our homes and there is not 24/7 front desk service like in a hotel! We offer much more than a hotel but keep this in mind when seeing the myriad of different and unique check in/check outs.
For me a check in after 2pm (even if that means after midnight if needed) or into the wee hours of the morning (Check out 11am sharp)
Please try and give me a rough idea of the time you'd like to
checkin, it's courteous and free's my day for other activities.
PEOPLE: often ask about the safety of the neighborhood -- it's urban and ethnically diverse -- so you have an eclectic mix of working professionals, grit, artists, homeless and hipsters.
West Oakland is the birthplace of the Black Panthers, it's
NOT a white suburban environment filled w/ shopping venues.
West Oakland was a manufacturing center for decades, now
those same buildings have been converted to live/work units.
they are filled w/ artists who can't afford to live in san francisco. If you feel comfortable with this description, you will feel comfortable here. I personally love the area and feel safe.
eclectic LIVE/work warehouse.
very private, quiet, paradise in one of the best location(s) in w. oakland. enormous yard, w/ garden, plenty of flowers,
space for relaxation, solitude if desired.
we are less than a 1/2 mile from the bay bridge.
w. oakland bart station is less than a mile as well.
bus leaves you literally on the corner, 100 metres
from home. having said that regarding "mass transit",
many find the 1 mile walk to be to much and the time
schedule often interferes w/ guests schedules. there
are of course many restaurants in nearby downtown
w/ choices ranging from the low end to several hundred.
currently there are 7 LIVE/work units.
comfortable large room 300sq' w/
full bath as well as access to kitchen facilities.
we are literally 4 blocks from several of these locations.

in addition a new Korean rest., "Fuse Box" opened roughly 75' from our front door. "Brown Sugar Kitchen" is 2 blocks away as well!!
please take the time to read "House Rules".
there is a FULLY REFUNDABLE deposit of 150 dollars.
of course i want nothing more than to return ALL OF IT!!

Brea is a fabulous host; a kind soul and fascinating person to chat with over coffee. The warehouse space and garden courtyard are absolutely awesome! My first night's stay turned into three. I would even consider being a long-term tenant here.
I highly recommend staying here if you dig artist warehouse compound living. Brea has great taste and keeps the entire space clean and well maintained. The location is also convenient to West Oakland BART, Emeryville and the freeway. My thanks, Brea!
I loved this place. Everything in it, around it,... would come back within a heartbeat!
It was the perfect place to stay (at least for me) in every sense!
Everybody living there and every one I met at Brea's place during my stay were warmhearted, great people!
My room was spacious and comfortable. I only needed the propan gas heater before I went to bed, cause sometimes it gets a little bit chilly in the BayArea wintertime (but 1-2 hrs on lowest level is enough). The kitchen & bathrooms are just great & clean!
I loved sitting on the bench in the inner yard and having my morning coffee.
The location of the place itself was perfect. During my stay I did several daytrips (to Sacramento, Monterey, Santa Rosa, ...) which is perfect from Westoakland cause you're on the highway within minutes and there's not much traffic.
The NL bus leaves just one block down the street and it takes you to SF within 15 min or to Lake Merritt/downtown Oakland; the 26 takes you either to Emeryville or Westoakland BART station. I enjoyed walking to the BART station down Mandela Pkwy which took me approx. 20 min.
People I talked to in the streets /whilst asking for directions were nice and helpful - also at nighttime I felt save (as save as possible as a young woman can feel at night in whatever street)
Brea was wonderful, what an inspiring person!
Thank you so much for all the great advise / input on what to do and where to go (Monterey, American Steal, CityslickerFarm, ...)
I felt as if you had known me for a while... :) Thanks
My first night, i took the BART straight from the airport to the nearest station to her home (30 min. maybe?), where Brea picked me up. She was- and is- very kind and thoughtful to offer this. (a taxi is only $10 from West Oakland to her digs) We drove into a close by area of Oakland and had a lovely evening! I really enjoyed meeting all of her tenants too- a friendly, down to earth, really nice and varied group. I'm really glad I came and stayed at her place- and look forward to catching up with Brea when i'm back in the area!
Brea was quick in replies, communication was good!
Place doesn't a central heating system, but Brea provided us with a propane heater.
Bathrooms, showers are as described, but not heated.
If you are non smoker, pls ask Brea for a non-smoking room, we didn't do it.
Bed sheets, towels were clean, but furniture a floor could be better. Though I have to say that our standard for clean room is very high, so it might be no problem for other people.
Kitchen as described, you can use dishes and stove.
West Oakland BART Station is 25 minutes away by walking.
as discussed prior to arrival.
"we are closest to the west Oakland BART station, it's closest to
san Francisco. if you've more luggage than you want to carry
get off at the 12th st BART station, when you come up to surface streets
you'll see cabs. I think it's maybe 5~6 dollars for a cab.
once you're settled, we are a little less than a mile from west Oakland bart
station and it's a pleasant walk down a tree lined boulevard to the station."
distance to bart is 9/10th's of a mile, zactly cause I drove it in me ole truck.
this is an industrial warehouse area and there are many in the area. NONE of
them have "central heating", the cost is prohibitive. if I win the lottery i'll central
heat 9,000 sq feet first thing. under "amenities" smoking is allowed, there are
other tenants here. there's no smoking in the guest rooms.
it has been my unfortunate experience when guests express criticism(s) generally they are the result of not reading about the property in information provided. the photo's are accurate, that's a marble desk and an antique century old Chinese dresser w/ original keys. the floor was intentional by myself of course and quite pretty through myopic eyes, took 2 days labor on that floor. oh, oh, almost forgot, we have maid service as well which is quite expensive
in my eyes. soooo there's butter side up for you................
I came here by chance, and I had no idea of the West Oakland before this stay. In both the above cases, I received an extraordinary experience. Brea is a great host and we had an inspiring conversation over morning coffee in the beautiful kitchen. And West Oakland, what can I say? A truly unique place filled with beautiful views for those who understands how to appreciate modern nostalgia. Fabulous eateries in close proximity.
Brea was great.
My stay in Oakland was short but my experience makes me want to go back. I had to attend a potluck party in SF so I had to bake something yummy. The oven is AWESOME. I know that's not something people think much about when considering an air bnb.. but it's professional grade.
My baking aside.. the space is very unique... very beautiful ... and the artists who share the space are so nice.
Will definitely stay again. Thanks Brea!
Wonderful and unique space. The outdoor patio is absolutely amazing!!! so inspiring to see an open community space like this in the city. Definitely created with love and intention.
My partner and I had a wonderful stay there. Really nice people that share the space. Brea was a great host, and host of some great conversations. When we were headed off to breakfast she recommended we go to a different place a few blocks down the road, and so glad she did... it was AMAZING!
The space is as described, a warehouse turned into a living space in a more commercial area of Oakland. If you are not comfortable with things out of the ordinary or off the beaten path then this place is not for you. It's artistic, creative, and the space is still being created and constructed, so don't expect fully painted walls and finished floors throughout the entire place. Not a non smoking space FYI.
You won't find a place like it anywhere else -truly a gem!
The room itself is very spacious. Simple, yet welcoming. Nice large window that overlooks the patio space (with nice large drapes to block out the light and for privacy when needed). 2 amazing bathrooms right across the hall. You'll just have to see the creative stonework and design for yourself to understand what I mean by amazing.
EASY drive to and from airport and in and out of San Fran. Very easy to find, even after dark. Would highly recommend it to others. Will definitely stay there again! I left feeling refreshed and inspired.
Brea is super casual and relaxed. Her house is also amazingly set up with access to a variety of different creative spaces. I stayed here while my houseboat was being worked on and her only house rule was to make myself at home. Great stay!
The space was clean and chilled out
I was in Oakland for an artist workshop at Magnolia Editions which turned out to be just a block away from this space! It was perfectly convenient for me. The locations is really easy to get to if you are driving, as I was. The building has a funky artsy feeling as advertised which worked fine for me and I would stay here again.
