The Old Homestead is close (1 and 1/2 miles) to the downtown area of Berkeley Springs with the state park, spas, shops, and restaurants. The house is set in a large shaded area above two ponds and rolling fields with a view of Sleepy Creek Mountain. Built around 1800, the house had rooms added in about 1850.
The Old homestead was built in 1800 and added to in about 1850. Copies of deeds and the original land grant are in the kitchen. Notice the huge fossil rocks in the fireplace wall in the kitchen, which was added in 1850. Workmen took layers of paint off these rocks with Coke and a wire brush. Two old fashioned wooden rockers were just added to the living room and sit before the fireplace (with wood stove insert.) A new 32 inch TV and Blue-ray access were also just installed. (It's hard to include modern conveniences and keep the 1800s atmosphere. The TV sits in an antique cabinet. ) There is a small fireplace (non-working) in the middle bedroom (#2). Just added a four-poster maple bed with new memory foam mattress in the back bedroom (#3) off the deck. NOTE: The back bedroom (#3) is a "captured room". It can only be reached by going through adjoining door with bedroom #2, or from outside deck. You can relax on the deck or nap in the hammock near the front porch. Sit on the back patio and watch wildlife , including deer, drink at the pond. Propane gas grill is on patio. Five yard chairs and fire pit just added in the back yard, but must have owner's permission on day of usage (Will depend on local fire rating and weather.) Must keep metal screen on fire bowl at all times. Many DVDs, VCR tapes, CDs stored in TV/audio cabinet in living room (including many kids' selections). Books and games for children and adults are stored in two bookcases for guests' use.
Guests are welcome to access the area around the house and the pond. They may also walk through the woods and fields (except during hunting season; dates will be posted in the house). Dogs must be under control as neighbors are also dog owners. Please read over "House Rules" booklet (in kitchen) upon arrival
