Hello! Welcome to Jefferson Chalmers! I have done much traveling, and I know the importance of having a friendly, clean, and safe refuge when traveling in unknown territory. Jefferson Chalmers is the neighborhood that I grew up in, and I have been working on homes here to preserve the community. This home is one of them. It is a very cozy cottage like space, a perfect place to use as a home base for touring the City. There are three full time residents here, an artist, a clothing designer, and a dancer. The home is always full of interesting and friendly people. There is one full bath and and a full open kitchen which is available for cooking and storing food. This house was built in the 20s but was abandoned for many years and suffered a lot of damage. I just finished its rehab and am happy to see it alive again. Instead of a full tear out I tried to preserve the existing detail that is created when a house is abandoned. Income from the home will go into further renovations over time and will slowly erase the scars of abandonment. Given the increasing interest in Jefferson Chalmers, and given my need to fund my preservation projects in the community, I decided to make this space available to travelers looking for a quality, laid back living space for a reasonable price. This provides a place for you, brings awareness to the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood, and funds improvements on the Marlborough block!

The house is fully furnished, and you can make yourself at home here. There is speedy wifi, a lot of space for working or relaxing in communal areas, and a washer and dryer. The neighborhood is filled with beautiful old homes, and a number of parks along the river. There are also canals that run through the neighborhood, and a couple of small single block islands with homes on them! Jefferson Chalmers is working to bring back its shopping district, but there are grocers and restaurants nearby. We can help you find anything you may be looking for. The Grosse Pointes are also situated on the edge of the neighborhood, providing upscale options for shopping if needed.

I don't live in this house but I am easy to contact for anything you might need. And guests often find that the roommates in the house are great resources for recommendations. Also, I will send a full list of suggestions for restaurants, grocers, and things to do once your booking is complete.

The housing consists of bungalows and Arts and Crafts houses built in the early 20th Century that have maintained their character and beauty. Most blocks have many owner occupied houses and mowed lawns. The neighborhood is on the Detroit River and is bordered by beautiful river side parks, canals, and residential islands accessible by bridge. The Jefferson-Chalmers Business District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 and is one of a few early twentieth-century neighborhood commercial districts that still survive in Detroit. During the 1920s, this district along Jefferson was the center of the east-side neighborhood's commercial, social, and cultural life. The district is unique in that two big-band era ballrooms, the cultural fulcrums of the early 20th century social scene, still exist within the district: the Monticello and the Vanity Ballroom.

There is plenty of street parking in front of the house. And for public transit the house is a block and a half from the 25 Jefferson bus line which runs frequently and will take you downtown. There are also the 9 Chalmers and the 13 Connor routes within very close walking distance.

Jon and Angelique were very friendly, and though we only stayed the night, we had a great experience!

Great value! Great home base for exploring. A quick LYFT ride to the shops at grosse pointe, river walk, eastern market, and downtown. There's even a nice little coffee shop at the end of the block.

Location suitable for my needs; host very friendly and gracious. Really only slept there; up early and back at dark. House is a fixit upper. Hot shower was nice. Plentiful space in frig. Good wifi. Safe parking. Squeaking stairs; bed on floor but comfy.

Jon and Aragorn were wonderful hosts. Booking was easy and Aragorn sent a comprehensive list of places to see and eat that we used to plan our days. Jon received us and was very flexible with our check-in/check-out. He also helped give us a sense of Detroit--the history, where to go, what to see. The house and room were very clean. The only thing that was an issue for us was that the mattress is soft, and we prefer a firm mattress. In fairness, it was not a question we asked before booking. Overall, an excellent experience.

I am very passionate about Detroit! I enjoy seeing the changes happening here every day. I have so many good friends that are living their dreams, starting farms, triple bottom line food businesses, working in social justice, urban planning, and creating amazing art projects.

I am currently working in high performance/research computing at Wayne State University and am rehabilitating homes in my old neighborhood, Jefferson Chalmers. In what spare time I have I dabble in art, gardening, cooking, and hackery things at OmniCorp Detroit. I am a lover of travel, music, biking, dancing, books, and I try my best to stay informed about current events.

I am laid back, flexible and tidy, and I like to host people that are the same.
Let me know what brings you to town, I enjoy hearing why people come to visit Detroit.

Welcome!
