James was a great host and very accommodating on a last minute reservation. The house was clean and comfortable for our family traveling with children.

Most important point is this is NOT a whole house rental by normal definitions. It's a 4br/3bath house and the 4th bedroom, 3rd bath and back entrance are being lived in by the host or someone else. They simply locked a door at the end of the hall and in the back bedroom that leads to that area of the same house. This is not a duplex or guest unit on the property but inside the same house. They are generally quiet, but you can hear them walking, sneezing, dropping things and kids sometimes. Now, if you know that and are still interested, the house location itself is very, very good. The famous Greenblatt's Deli is a block away and is fantastic. Laugh Factory is right there, too. Comedy Store is down the street. There's a CVS across the street and a movie theatre. You're minutes from pretty much everything you'd want to get to. LOVED the central location. There's a busy road out front that is pretty noisy for the front bedroom, so you need a sound sleeper there. The front bedroom also doesn't have much to block the light from the windows, so it's also tough to sleep once the sun comes up. The other two bedrooms are further back so you still kind of hear the traffic, but it's nowhere near as bad, and there are blinds on the window to keep the room from getting too bright in the morning. The sidewalk in front is a disaster from tree roots, literally raising the cement 2 feet in multiple spots. We had someone in a wheelchair and ended up using the back exit because the front was almost impassible in a wheelchair. The side of the house leading to the back exit isn't wheelchair friendly because the path is crushed rock with a few paver stones, but it was better than the front sidewalk. The bathrooms were charming with an (original?) (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) vibe and modern elongated bowl toilets in both. The two main bedrooms share a bath in a Jack and Jill arrangement. That bathroom could use some window coverings on the upper windows next to the sink for privacy. Grout in the shared bathroom is kind of funky and could use a good steam clean and scrub and the shower drain in the hall is partially plugged so water builds up into a pool as you shower. But overall the bathrooms are good. Wi-Fi internet service is literally the best we've ever had in an AirBnB. All of us had laptops and ipads and the internet service was blazing fast all the time. Kitchen was great, with nice counter, big sink, nice fridge, and great stove. The freezer icemaker is iced over and appears broken, and the microwave door needs some heavy cleaning since it has what looks like food residue in the screen. But those are two small negatives in a kitchen that is very functional and nice-looking. Parking is only for a single car...

The Airbnb listing is accurately labeled as an “Entire home/apt” because the home is setup as two completely separate and private units with completely separate entrances and no shared interior space. The description further clarifies this arrangement in the “Guest access” section: “Guests will have access to the main house at the front of this property, which is a very spacious 3 bedroom, 2 bath home, with a large and open living room with high ceilings, kitchen, and laundry room. The interior space of the home measures approximately 1,980 square feet, which is quite large, and it is completely private with its own entrance. There is also a guest unit at the rear of the property, which is the owner's unit. This has a separate entrance in the back and is also completely private. No interior common space is shared. Only the backyard is shared for access, though the owner is hardly ever there, and defers to his guests for use of the backyard for their enjoyment.” A house of this size, if it were the entire property including the owner’s unit would rent closer to $600 per night, instead of closer to $300 per night as it is currently. So this is an incredible value to stay in such a large home in almost 2,000 square feet in such an amazing and central location. Moreover, only the owner stays full time in the rear unit. He is hardly ever there and is very considerate about keeping noise levels down when he is there alone or with guests. The city sidewalk in the front is broken up—the owner has absolutely no control over this. Easy access to the home is from there rear of the home and that easily avoids the busy street and broken sidewalk, and provides very easy loading and unloading of guests and baggage, and this is clearly stated in the initial access instructions. The owner (who is somewhat of a germophobe himself) really aims to keep everything very clean especially the bathrooms and kitchen, although because of the age of the home, almost 90 years, some parts of the home do show some vintage patina. The drains and sewer lines have all been replaced under the current ownership, so everything drains quickly and easily. Nevertheless, the owner will take a look at the shower pans and make sure there is nothing else obstructing them closer to the surface. Parking is at a premium in this neighborhood. However, the owner is able to get parking for multiple cars and recently accommodated a group with 6 cars. The parking arrangements however do need to be made in advance and the owner’s initial welcome and access email provides clear instructions to make these arrangements before the check in date.

Great location! Walking distance to many shops and restaurants. James was always quick to respond! Rooms were large and house was spacious. The only thing that is not accurate about the house is that he does live in the house and shares a wall with the back bedroom. So in reality you are not getting the entire home.

Yes, there is a common wall separating the main house from the rear owner's unit. Here is the exact description as per the Airbnb listing “Guest access” section: “Guests will have access to the main house at the front of this property, which is a very spacious 3 bedroom, 2 bath home, with a large and open living room with high ceilings, kitchen, and laundry room. You get what you pay for! Great location but house could be cleaner, needed to provide more utensils and towels. Things needs to be fixed which would make a difference! Home has potential to be better!

Risposta di James:
That’s interesting. Usually guests comment on how very clean the home is, which it is. This is a 90 year old home that has been restored, but not over restored to take away its vintage qualities, such as its vintage stained glassed windows and some original hardware. Everything in the house works and is meticulously maintained. There are two full sets of utensils in the kitchen, though admittedly it appears that some kitchen tools have gone missing or broke, so I will be shoring up these items soon. There is also a linen closet in the hallway that provides many additional towels, sets of clean sheets, pillows, pillowcases, etc. I'm not sure if this guest every asked about this or looked in there. I will post a picture of the linen closet soon. Unfortunately, you can’t please all the people all the time and some people tend to focus on the negative without any appreciation for the large space and vintage details of the home, not to mention my customer service in accommodating this large group and parking their half dozen cars.

We enjoyed staying at James's place. It was close to restaurants, grocery stores and Hollywood boulevard. It was a great deal! But the kitchen wasn't fully equipped and the host didn't respond to our request for a knife or cutting board. I understand he wasn't obligated to offer us all the tools but it would be nice to at least respond.

Is he a native of Los Angeles, did he really grow up on Laurel Canyon? Or is he an East Coast carpetbagger? Some say he went to Yale like sometime neighbor F. Scott Fitzgerald's Nick Carraway. Others say he went to UCLA film school like sometime fellow Laurel Canyon resident James Douglas Morrison. Some say he went to both, that he actually earned a Master of Fine Arts at UCLA.

Though artist he seemingly is none. A businessman is more apparent, but what business, legal or illegal? Walking a fine line between reality and fiction, the old economy and the new economy? A real estate agent, no less one who is saving a whole mountain and wildlife corridor? That's hard to believe, a generous one? Or a greedy one, only selling luxury properties?

Is he a sharing economy entrepreneur, living in a McCastle, or Castillo? As he sometimes likes to call it, in his delusional tall tales of grandeur. Driving around in a 2016 Porsche Macan S or his 2004 Porsche Boxster S 50 Years of the 550 Spyder Limited Edition, which he will share with you via Turo, really? Or is he really only supporting the sharing economy by taking Lyfts everywhere? Or both?

You choose what to believe about this man, tall tale or truth. But one thing is to be certain, you can experience it all and find out for yourself during your stay here at The Great Gatsby. Inquire Within ;)
