UPDATE, May 10: COVID-19 and Your Trip to the Anchorage

As of May 5, the state of Maine has said that out-of-state summer residents must quarantine for 14 days *after* they arrive on site, but things are changing hourly. Without a crystal clear mandate, I am changing my booking to allow guests to stay longer.

I will undoubtedly be changing things again, so for now I have turned off Instant Booking so that we can speak before you book the house. I have lowered my prices per night *already* by 30%., but I will be giving additional discounts to people who want to book July 1 -26 or from Labor Day weekend through the first week of October.

What we're doing about safety:

The Anchorage is already on a large plot of land. You'll only interact with your party. You can even social distance within the house -- there are three distinct zones, all with their own bathrooms and doors leading outside.

A big family could convene to the property from different locations, spend the necessary quarantine period apart, and reunite.

We can have the fridge stocked on arrival, if you want (and all the items will be sterilized), and continue to bring you groceries if you want to shelter in place. I'm sure we can arrange to have local meals and fresh lobster and other seafood delivered safely to your door as well.

Our cleaners will be using a bleach solution to clean all surfaces -- and more importantly, I'll be leaving the house empty for a few days before the cleaners go inside and then several days after the house has been cleaned. The fresh laundry will also be in place long enough that you can handle it with confidence.

If you're tired of being cooped up in the city, and want a place where you can spread out this summer, I'm happy to have you as a guest.

Please reach out to me with any questions!

THE ANCHORAGE

The main house was built in 1812 by Samuel Billings, the son of one of the Blue Hill Peninsula's original land grant settlers. Billings was a master carpenter by trade, and the Anchorage is widely regarded as his greatest achievement. Among its notable features are the original central chimney, wide-plank flooring, hand-painted fireplaces, diamond-paned windows with leaded glass, and gothic arches.

From the late nineteenth century until just a few years ago, the Anchorage belonged to two friendly Pennsylvania families who summered on the Blue Hill Peninsula. The property passed from one family to the other in the 1920s. The second family is responsible for adding the west wing master suite, the east wing, and some of the most fanciful bathrooms you will ever see. The Anchorage was much loved and cared for during their 90-year tenure, and their artistic and eclectic touches truly make it a magical place.

THE LAYOUT

In addition to the living room, a formal dining room with seating for 10-12 people, a child's play area, and a kitchen, the Anchorage has six bedrooms located in four distinct zones.

1. The west wing suite, perfect for families with children, has a large master bedroom with a queen and toddler bed and an attached bathroom. There is an additional small bedroom with a double bed. Both bedrooms open into the playroom, and the suite has its own separate entrance.

2. Two upstairs bedrooms share a sink and toilet. These are my favorite bedrooms in the house; they have beautiful southern exposure and great views of Eggemoggin Reach. One room has a double bed, and the other contains two twins.

3. The east, or "blue," wing bedroom, with its painted double bedstead, has a screened door that opens on to a private porch. This wing has the only full bathroom in the house, with a clawfoot tub, a separate shower, and painted wall murals.

4. The Estemere, located at the rear of the house, contains a large double bedroom with a sink. Outside the room is another sink, a fabulous shower, and the "Throne" -- a toilet you access via a short flight of stairs. This is a great spot for a couple who wants privacy from the rest of the group. It has not one, but two separate entrances.

The property is available from late June through September.

Accesso per gli ospiti
The whole house is yours. Enjoy drinks on the wraparound porch, where you can watch distant boats on Eggemoggin Reach and catch glimpses of the Deer Isle Bridge. Kids will love exploring the barn or hiking through the 20 acres of woods behind the house up to a four-acre blueberry field loaded with delicious organic berries.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
Looking for a place to write, paint, or just enjoy the fall foliage in peace and quiet? In the month of September, you can rent the Anchorage at a reduced rate.

Sedgwick, Maine, Stati Uniti

Sargentville, Maine is a quiet, friendly village midway between Deer Island and Blue Hill. We're lucky to have a very popular Mexican restaurant that can be accessed through a path in the woods behind the house. The property is within one mile of the scenic overlook at Caterpillar Hill, a driving range, a gas station and general store (with soft serve ice cream and five dollar pizza!), and the Mariner's Pub. There is a public boat landing in Sedgwick, a seven minute drive.

It takes just 15 minutes to get to Blue Hill, with its shops and restaurants. Acadia National Park and the picturesque town of Belfast are both an hour away.
