Live in himalayan wooden cottage made by our NGO to help the reconstruction of our school in Kolakham, Darjeeling region. Enjoy the wonderful view of mount Kanchanjanga (8598m) and Himalayas, village in the wild Forest. Warm hospitality by villagers.
You will live an typical experience in the core a Himalaya at 2400m altitude, in India, in the remote village of Kolakham, on the fringe of the Neora Valley National Park.
You can admire the panoramic view from the wooden cottage of the mount Kanchanjangha (8598m) and others mounts such as Kabru (7412m), Kumbhakarna, (7710m), Pandim (6691m), Goecha La (4940m),and others... !
The cottage has an history. It has been made by our NGO, in respect of the environment, constructed by the inhabitants and with the aim to help the inhabitants of Kolakham with the nursery school, situated down of the cottage. Our NGO Swadhin Yatra has indeed built this school in 2010 to provide an education of quality to the children of this region, accessible to all.
In the wooden cottage, you can enjoy cooking with a panoramic view on the mountains. The kitchen is fully equipped with gas oven, pans, pressure cooker, and other utensils. You can also enjoy cooking with Indian dishes.
There are two bedrooms of which one has a window with a full view on the Himalaya. Early morning, at the sunrise, you can take a breathtaking look at the Kanchanjangha mount with the beautiful light of the sun. Each bedroom has wooden floors and walls, a natural isolation, and is equipped with a double bed, duvet and pillows, a night table, a wardrobe, and light.
From the balcony, you can enjoy the magnificient view on the Kanchanjanga, the state of Sikkim and the forest.
The living room/hall is equipped with 4 wooden stools and wooden table.
The bathroom is equipped with an ecologic water heater (low electrical consumption), a mirror, a sink and clothes hangers.
The toilet is separated, and western style.
The cottage 's total space is 75 Sqm.
The wooden cottage is located in the border of Neora Valley national park, a wild forest protected bu WWF. Many wild animals and variety of species of birds, such as eagles, kites, red pandas, barking deers, can be easily found in this area. Beautiful and magnificent view of mount Kanchanjangha (8598 m, Singalila range) can be seen from the cottage, a breathtaking view!
Changay waterfalls is in walking distance. You can also discover the forest and go for trekking. If you need a guide, you can ask to the inhabitants who can arrange for an English speaking guide from the village.
It is an amazing destination to discover nature, trekking or hiking or exploration!

Make your travelling worthwhile and helpful by staying in our small ECO-HUT in the heart of Himalayas and participating in our solidarity action to rebuild a nursery school in the village. The small typical Himalayan cottage made with bamboo and wood is situated at 2400 meters altitude near Bhutan, Tibet and Sikkim border, and in North of the state of West Bengal, India.
You will be warmly welcome by a family of Kolakham, from whom you will collect the keys.
Your stay in the village and in this cottage will help us to reconstruct the nursery school, made by our NGO in 2010. You can meet the children and the teachers. You can eventually, according to the needs, participate with the villagers in the reconstruction program of our nursery school.
The village of Kolakham is situated in the core of Himalaya, at 2400 meters altitude, on the fringe of the Neora Valley Nationale Park. It is located at the border of Bhutan (15 km), Tibet (90km) and Sikkim border, in the state of West Bengal, India.
This remote place, far from pollution and noise of city, is a peaceful place, where you can enjoy the green and silent nature and admire the great Himalaya. It is also an very important spot for birdwatchers coming from all around the world, to watch Himalayan golden eagles and other rare species of tropical and colorful birds.
In Kolakham, the majority of the inhabitants is from Raï community, vegetarian and from Hindu religion, coming mostly from Nepal. There are also some other tribal communities such as Lepcha, Tamang, Ghishing, Gurung and Thami.
Major attractions in Kolakham are :
- the Changay water falls, you can go by walking (1h) or by jeep and then walking in the park.
- The Neora Valley National Park with the "zero point", from where you have a breathtaking view of Kanchanjangha mount. Accessible by jeep and then walking. A wide range of wild animals can be found here such as barking deers, flying squirrels, red pandas and variety of different species of birds! You can trek around if you wish so.
- The nursery school, off course. You can meet the children and the teachers, before or after class, in order not to disturb the education.
-You can discover the nearest town LAVA, 8 km distance (jeep 45min or by walking 1h30). Jeeps are available in Kolakham. You can visit the buddhist monastery, from the Dalaï Lama branch. There is also a local market every Tuesday in Lava, where you can buy indian spices, vegetables, fruits, grocery and other Indian stuff. You can see many people, as the market is a social event, and lot of people from the surrounding villages meet and share during that day. You can also find typical clothes such as salwar, saree, shawl, etc...
- The nearest city is Kalimpong, 45 km - 3 hours by jeep. Kalimpong is the Indian capital of orchids, and is an ancient Irish counter.
- The city of Darjeeling, the world capital of tea, is at 120 km distance, about 6 hours by jeep.

You can come by jeep only to Kolakham, as the road is rocky.
We can book a reserved jeep for you as per your demand, to make your journey easy. You will just need to pay the driver once arrived in Kolakham.
Or else, you can take a jeep from Lava at the jeep stand, from Kalimpong near the Kanchan cinema motor stand, from the station NJP in Siliguri, or from the airport of Bagdogra.
Smoking, alcohol and pets are not allowed.
As the inhabitants are vegetarian, we request you to respect the local culture and to eat without fish or meat. Yes, yes, you can live without it ! :)

I have started the NGO Swadhin Yatra in 2006 in the aim to participate in the improvement of the living conditions of the helpless and indigent in India.
I have worked in Kolkata with slum dwellers by disbursing microcredit without interest rate in order to help them developing their activities and business. Then, I have settled in the village of Kolakham to develop an educational based project. Our NGO has built the nursery school in 2010.
I am Yoga teacher and ayurvedic consultant by profession for several years, and like sharing with people about philosophy, spirituality, travel, and culture.
I am leaving in France now and like making my country, India discover. I like travelling and understanding the daily and true life of people.
As I have lived more than 2 years in Kolakham, I know well that place and the inhabitants. A family welcomes you there and makes you feel home!
