Alvor was recently considered one of the most beaurtiful fishing towns in the Algarve region! Aside from fishing, trade and tourism are it's main economic activities.
Alvor is mainly known for it's beautiful beaches and for it's breathtaking estuary. Contrary to the popular belief, Alvor doesn't mean dawn but fortress. It'name comes from the Arabic al-burdj.
Bars and restaurants are the ex-libris in Alvor. With lots of entertainment and diversity, Alvor atracts hundreds of tourists every year but it's not ruined by the tourism development. Geographically bounded by the municipalities of Lagos and Portimão, Alvor is considered the third most important wetland in the Algarve region and the most important in the western (URL HIDDEN) 2006 the European Union included the Alvor estuary in the Natura 2000 site network for it's variety of habitats and protected species. This estuary is a small portuguese river resulting from the union of four watercourses born in the southern slopes of the Monchique Mountain: Farelo stream, Torre stream, Odiáxere stream and Arão stream. In Alvor there is an impressive boardwalk that extends itself for miles! While walking along or having your morning jog, you get to be blowned away by some of the most fascinating natural wildlife that you will ever find! This protected area is located between Alvor, Mexilhoeira Grande, Figueira and Odiáxere and has about 1400 hectares. On one side there is the sea, and on the other, a mirror of the estuary that extends inwards and between a long and extensive dune - the landscape consists of dunes, beaches, sand exposed at a low tide and permanent water courses, where species and habitats find their shelter. The magic in the Ria de Alvor aka Alvor Estuary happens though at the end of the day when the wonderful evening light in shades of red, orange, blue, pink and purple forms and delights the beholder.
