Comfortable single / twin room in tranquil woodland setting, 75 km north of Inverness.
We also have the double ensuite room and a smaller single/twin room so we can take a group of up to 6 people
Our home is noted for its tranquillity and also for its accessibility to other parts of the Scottish Highlands with all the variety they offer. The mountains and Sandy coves of the north and west, and beaches, golf courses and Pictish sites of the east are all easy day trips from here.
We are a short walk from the Inverness to Thurso rail line which has a station in our village. We can also pick you up by car from the train.
We are open all year round, the house is warm in winter, and we are able to offer lunches and evening meals (on request) as well as breakfasts.
Balvaig is a lovely cottage in a beautiful and very tranquil setting in the village of Culrain in northern Scotland, and is on the main railway line from Inverness to Wick & Thurso for John O'Groats.
As this is a relatively under-explored and unknown part of the Scottish Highlands we provide extensive information for our guests, walking routes, car tours, etc., based on weather forecasts.
Breakfast is provided at a time to suit you; as late as you like so that you can have a good sleep-in, and we pride ourselves on using only good quality ingredients. We use free range, organic and fairtrade foods as far as possible. For a small extra charge we can provide packed lunches and an evening meal (advance warning appreciated).
The cottage is situated on the edge of a forest, on the side of a hill overlooking the Kyle of Sutherland, north of Inverness. Here there is easy access to a wide variety of places including the cathedral town of Dornoch, the Pictish Trail, fairy tale castles, beautiful sandy beaches, scenic golf courses, delightful woodland walks, waterfalls, gorges, mountain bike trails, historic towns, the remarkable mountains and stunning landscapes of Sutherland which are among the most spectacular in Scotland. Our recommended day tours from here have been much enjoyed by our guests.
5 miles away is the pretty village of Bonar Bridge which has a bank, post office, library and places to eat.
The Dornoch Firth, lying to the north of Inverness, a designated National Scenic Area, is one of Scotland's best kept secrets. It is a glorious drive along both sides of the Firth.
We are also in an ideal location for visitors to both the North West and North East coastal areas of Scotland as well as being in easy reach of Inverness.
You have use of the kitchen/dining area where you can usually prepare meals if we know in advance. We also offer simple evening meals for about £12/person.
The garden, which has seating areas, is here for you to enjoy.

We will enjoy meeting and getting to know you but we also respect your desire for peace and privacy so we will be led by you.
Our immediate neighbourhood is mixed woodland and farmland - lots of lovely walks in the area around the house. There is a stream with several waterfalls near the house and it is a lovely area for peace and tranquility.
Un giro nei dintorni
Although it is in a peaceful rural location there is a small train station just 1km from the house, linking us with the city of Inverness - just 40 miles away, the market town of Tain and the north coast of Scotland - for John O'Groats. Ullapool and Lochinver are also not far away but require a car.
Talk quietly after 10pm
