Airbed in private room, shared bath. Safe, clean, well-priced, and full of eclectic charm. Close to Boston, universities; 1.5 blocks from major transportation hub. Wifi, off-street parking. AirBnB Superhosts four years running.
**Please read our entire listing, including 'house rules', so you know what to expect. Also, PLEASE DO NOT MAKE A RESERVATION until after we've responded to your inquiry. Minimum stay of two nights.**
Sometimes available: couch or airbed in cozy, quiet living room with curtains to close it off for privacy. Couch does not open and it's not quite full-length, but most people who sleep on it say it's very comfortable. If that doesn't do it for you, please ask for our one-person airbed with feather bed and duvet which is super comfy. We have a friendly cat who will likely wander in to explore. Bathroom is one flight up stairs right next to living room and is shared with us. Please note that this room is closed off from the rest of the house by heavy drapes only, so there is visual but not audio privacy. Wireless internet; off-street parking; LIGHT use of kitchen; easy public transportation; great, safe neighborhood. Like most New England homes, house is made of wood and slightly creaky; all windows have curtains but some light comes through. Please see our other listing for more information. Kindly note this listing is only for short stays (no more than four days), and only for one person.
Multiple buses going everywhere are one block away and very frequent: a ride on one to the nearest subway takes 6 minutes.
Please note that we have a cat, who is super-cute, docile and slightly peculiar. Cat is House Owner. You cat people, you know what we mean. Stay here ONLY if you like cats and don't have allergies! We mean this, now. Because room is closed off by curtains, he WILL wander in occasionally. We will not lock him up elsewhere for your stay. :-)
PLEASE SEE OUR OTHER LISTING FOR OTHER INFORMATION ON THIS ROOM AND ABOUT THE HOUSE.
-No smoking in the house (but it's OK on one of our two porches).
-No pets. Sorry, we have a cat, and cat is House Owner. You cat people, you know what we mean. Stay here ONLY if you like cats and don't have allergies! We mean this, now. Because room is closed off by curtains, he WILL wander in and out. We will NOT lock him up elsewhere for your stay. :-)
-No guests except those registered in advance.
-Use the kitchen for LIGHT cooking, at reasonable hours.
-Shoeless house: you may wish to bring slippers.
-Generally, check-in time not before 3PM and check-out is by 11AM. Please expect to arrange an arrival time that is mutually agreeable, a reasonable interval in advance. If we don't have guests arriving the day you leave, a later check-out is possible. It may be possible to leave your luggage or car here before check-in or after checkout, please ask. We try very hard to accommodate our guests .
-If you wish to take occupancy of the room before noon, we must charge you for the previous night in order to hold the room available to you.
Even though I've been a frequent guess for the last 2 years, John and Jesa never take me for granted and still make sure I have all I need
Spring is coming to Boston and Jesa and John's place is full of light and amenities. Beautiful place to stay
When I arrived, Jesa and John introduced me to their cat and they told me that he will visit my room from time to time. Being very sleepy I lay down on the bed and the cat jumped on my arm rubbing his intimate places against it. I was trying to brush him off my arm and he bit my arm slightly through the sweater, it did not hurt, but I was scared. He tried to jump on the bed again and when I was trying to brush him off again he raised his paw threatening me. The room I was staying in is without a door, there is only a curtain in the doorway, which deprives you of privacy. So I told John that I like cats and I did not mind their cat visiting my room but I did not want the cat in my bed. John's face turned dark, he took the cat upstairs to their rooms, but then Jesa and John became unfriendly to me. When my alarm clock started ringing on the day of my departure at 8:00 am, Jesa even rushed into my room without asking permission ( remember, there is no door, only a cutain ) accusing me of disturbing other guests. But the guests (a married couple) were very nice to me and the man even offered his help to bring my luggage from upstairs to the front door and he (not the hosts) wished me a good flight home and Happy Easter.
Tatjana, we are so sorry you had an unpleasant stay with us. We try very hard to accomdate our guests in every way, and to manage expecations. That is why we make a big deal in our "house rules" that only people who know cats and cat behavior should stay here, especially since there are only curtains closing off the living room. Our cat is popular with our guests and among the most benign of cats to all who are familiar with them, as I demonstrated early by picking him up and dangling him upside down. Please note that we confined him away from you the moment you expressed discomfort.
As we told you, we learned during your stay that we had a dear friend dying: I am sorry that dampened our mood and that it encroached upon yours. Yes, the other guest were very nice, and wrote us a lovely review.
It was so nice stay at Jesa and John's house.
They told me the detailed direction so I could easily arrived their house. Welcome message on the door was glad and also hepful to find their house. Very convenient location, warm room, very cute and funny cat :)
I had an amazing stay at Jesa and John's house. They made me feel home, especially the cat!
The smartest cat I've ever seen; he gave me shoulder massage and cuddled with him before falling sleep. We bonded instantaneously and I missed him. :(
I'll definitely stay at Jesa and John's house next time I travel to Boston.
It's been many times that I've been at this place and Jesa and John keep treating me with the same high quality standards.
Mr. and Mrs. Bailes made me feel welcome and treated me with courtesy and respect.
The listing description was truthful and correct and the neighbourhood was nice and close to public transportation which I needed.
They are both very nice people and interesting to converse with, although I was not there enough during the day to properly enjoy that.

One of us is a Zen priest, around-the-world sailor and occasional financial consultant, and the other is primarily an arts marketer and artist who used to write on green building technologies. We've been married 25 years and still like it. We love art and good food and spending money on adventures rather than stuff. We don’t own a TV or a dishwasher because most of our pottery and hand-made glass won’t work in one, anyway. We are friendly with our tenants (professional musicians), know all our neighbors, and love the outdoors.
We’ve owned our house, an 1870s Victorian, for 18 years and live on the 2nd and 3rd floors (we rent out the 1st floor to our long-time tenant). It’s on a quiet, sunny street of other Victorians on the South side of Prospect Hill, just above Union Square. There is a carriage house out back, and an art studio is on the first floor of this (we’re renovating the top floor gradually as a meditation hall). The property in general is on a slow schedule of both renovation and benign neglect: there are always several construction projects in process.
There’s a parking area in between the two buildings for four cars which you can use if you've got one, and we also use this area for parties on occasion and for grilling, and for setting up the inflatable palm trees and wading pool and showing movies. There’s a garden.
And yes, fire spinning in the driveway is an option. Life motto? "Nothing exceeds like excess."
