Located near the Shirakawa and Kamogawa River, many Japanese art shops and antique shops line the nearby streets, making this a high-class area. A 3min walk from the station, this traditional house is the perfect place for you to relax & retreat to.
Hatoba-an is located near “Gion Higashi,” one of Kyoto's five “flower” districts (花街), where geiko and maiko live to learn their performance.
Hatoba-an is located on Komonmae Dori, a street that opened in 1603 and leads to Chion-in, the head temple of the Jodo Shu (Pure Land Sect of Buddhism). Currently, the area is a mecca for people interested in visiting some of the world's leading antique shops. Here it will offer you a great opportunity to experience the traditional atmosphere of Kyoto.
----- JAPANESE ROOM-----
Relax in this Japanese-style room that looks out into the traditional garden. Enjoy the changes of the seasons, where different characteristics of the scenery can be seen during the night and day. The table found in this room is made from the solid timber of a Japanese Zelkova tree. It has been carefully and painstakingly varnished using a technique that requires the repetition of painting and wiping the varnish coating numerous times.
The kitchen features a “Hibukuro,” or high ceiling that once served as a chimney. Now, rays of light penetrate the skylight windows to stir the imagination and evoke images of the traditions of times gone by. You will also find an antique cupboard and restored Japanese-style chest.
ESSENTIALS: refrigerator, microwave, toaster, kettle, rice cooker, and 2 induction heating plates, traditional plates and utensils (enough for 6 people), Japanese teacups, an iron teapot, and rice bowls.
This property features a bathroom that faces out towards the lush, and beautiful greenery of the courtyard garden. The washroom is spacious with a large mirror. The toilet can be found in a separate area on the 1st floor.
- "Tsuboniwa" GARDEN
From both the Japanese-style room and bathroom, you can gaze at the traditional Japanese garden, which contains Mokkoku trees, mountain maples, and hair cap moss. The Mokkoku, loved since Edo Period Japan, blooms small, delicate flowers in the spring. The corner of the garden contains “kikuzumi,” a unique charcoal that features cuts resembling a chrysanthemum (Kiku), which illustrates the beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
The bedroom is a serene space, where East meets West, and the balance between tradition and modernity is achieved. An old-fashioned wooden beam, which has supported the house from when it was first built, can be seen across the high ceilings. This bedroom has 2 western-style single beds.
----- JAPANESE-STYLE Bedroom-----
Here, the floors have been laid with traditional tatami mats, the plastered walls convey warmth of tradition, and the ceiling and furniture fittings are designed in a wickerwork pattern. When more than 3 guests are staying in the machiya, 3 sets of Japanese-style futons can be arranged in this room.
