Cosa farete

This activity involves short walk through open forest with a pack donkey followed by "boiling a billy" for morning or afternoon tea. The itinerary: Meet and greet donkeys, finalise packing etc at Kalinvale about 8.00 AM or 13.00PM; Walk up to “Tactics Hill” along an easy gradient, to see the view to Tepon Bluff and introduce history of training for Australian Sixth Division AIF on Atherton Tablelands; Walk along the hill via the coaching road, noting the sangers, explaining the WWII dug in training position located along the hill, the regional volcanics and lava flows and introduction to the trees and other fauna and flora encountered. Descend to the Wild River near the Kalunga Crossing to boil a billy home made cake; Walk back to the farm along a cleared walking track on the edge of the river, ETA 12.00 Midday or 16.00PM. Learn about donkeys and packing in Australia, mining history flora and fauna of the region. Total walking distance about 2km. I often see wallabies and a family of Wallaroos in this area.

Tim

I have been exploring the Australian bush since a teenager living in Tasmania. I have been fascinated by nature since. I spent 22 years in the Australian Army leading soldiers and teaching bush skills across Northern Australia, including three years as the senior instructor of the Australian Army's Survival School located in the Northern Territory. I started Wilderness Expeditions in 2000. Since then I have taught myself how to train and pack donkeys and have organised and conducted of treks up to three weeks duration. I was awarded membership of the Savannah Guides with guide status in 1999.

Che cosa è incluso

Cibo
Morning tea- "boil the billy" for tea or coffee with an ANZAC biscuit or Lammington cake

Dove ti troverai

Kalinvale farm is a "bush block" where our donkeys are agisted. It is the location of a WWII training site where the Australian soldiers were trained for the Kokoda Trail Campaign. This hill has reverted to natural open forest and overlooks the Wild River, with a rich tin mining heritage, and the disused Herberton to Ravenshoe railway line . An unformed road through basalt boulders was used by Cobb& Co style horse drawn coaches until 1930's

Altri consigli

We will be working with large draught animals (donkeys) which can be intimidating at first. Our donkeys are really pets so they enjoy a pat and human company (and the occasional peppermint). The guide will demonstrate how to handle and lead a donkey safely and quickly you will feel at ease.
