Cosa farete

Leave the crowds of the city behind and visit the beautiful countryside of Lejre in the new national park Skjoldungernes Land. On this 2 km walk, you can see the unspoilt historic monuments and sites from one of earliest period of Danish history and hear the local stories and legends that bring them alive.

For example, we'll see the site of Heorot, the magnificent mead hall mentioned in the epic Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, where feasting and drinking went on for days and nights and where Beowulf fought the monster Grendel. We'll walk through the viking cemetery marked by the ancient ship-formed stones and see the burial mound of the warrior Viking King Harald Wartooth. Along the way, I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about area's history and daily life in Denmark.

After the walk, I can supply you with a map and show you some great walking trails in the local woods if you want to explore further on your own.
Other things to note
The walk is relatively easy and on paths but please wear sensible shoes as we'll be walking over fields. Unfortunately the route is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

I'm Polly - a Brit who has lived in Denmark for 25 years and Lejre for almost twenty. I love this part of Denmark and showing visitors around so they get the best experience of the landscape, the views, the history and the legends. In 2015 Lejre became part of the new Skjoldungernes Land national park and I'm one of the park's local guides.
Please contact me if you'd like to book for another day or time and I'll see what I can do :-)

We had a great time with Polly. She provides a very good understanding and content of the local area. It ends at the local museum which re-enforced what we learned with Polly. Would recommend.

The walk with Polly was great fun. She gave me a thorough overview of the area, the legends, findings etc. She had answers to all my many questions. The final stop for tea and pastries was the "icing on the cake". I fully recommend the experience with Polly.

This one is absolutely recommended. Polly leads the group through some great scenery. She fills you in about the local history, and some mythology along the way. This tour is three hours well spend.

It was a great pleasure to have Polly as a guide on this tour. She was very easy to interact with and being a wonderful storyteller, Polly made the vikings and legends really come alive with stories that put the findings at Lejre into context. I enjoyed that the walk took us through fields and woodlands. And as an extra nice treat we had tea and cake at a local artists house. If you are interested in history and want to get out into the Danish countryside, I can highly recommend the tour.
