I will take you through a city treasure, constructed in 1799, all decorated for the 19th-century holiday season. The Museum will be closed to the public while we visit eight period rooms that showcase the time from 1826-1833 when the Mount Vernon Hotel entertained visitors in what was then the countryside. You'll hear stories about how 19th-century New Yorkers socialized as well as what and how they ate, especially during the holidays—highlighting figgy pudding, knife eaters, turtle soup, offensive table manners, and other bites of food history. Afterwards, you'll be treated to a historic tea tasting, served in ceramic tea cups made in the 1800s. You will sample four teas that were popular in the early 19th century while hearing about tea traditions in early America. The tasting will conclude with a surprise holiday-inspired "tea."
Il tuo host
I am the Director of the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden and have been involved with this amazing cultural institution for over 15 years. I'm passionate about sharing the history of early 19th-century New York with visitors of all ages and enjoy telling stories that connect the past with the present. I'm also a foodie and am fascinated by historic cookbooks and recipes and the insights that they can provide about life long ago.
Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden
The Mount Vernon Hotel Museum building was constructed in 1799, making it one of the oldest buildings in Manhattan. Today we present the "Mount Vernon Hotel" which opened in 1826 as a day hotel, or country resort, for New Yorkers escaping the crowded city below 14th Street. Our mission is to celebrate life in 19th-century New York through education, interpretation, and preservation.
