Cosa farete

The Tour is based on the History of the City, and its architecture it also covers several aspects of English Language, and the origins of phrases we take for granted. The duration is around 2 hours, and it's a gentle walking pace around the city. Canterbury's history stretched back over the millennia, from pre-Roman settlement to the present day city bustling with visitors, students, and locals alike. The footsteps of Pilgrims, and parsons, are etched into its fabric and the tour takes you in their footsteps. The tour is fully accessible for anyone in a wheelchair or with mobility issues, which given my work with the elderly I feel it's important to be inclusive. You will not find this tour in any guide book. All content is exclusive to this tour.
Please note under 14 Year-olds will be admitted 'free of charge', but must be accompanied by a full paying adult, unaccompanied children will not be admitted.
Re Parking and transport questions please use the online messenger and I can help with where to park, walking directions, bus routes and or rail routes. I am only a message away and ready to help answer any questions you may have.
The Meeting Point is right by the Canterbury Christchurch Gate, signposted from all over the city, no more than 10 minutes walk from all the car parks and the city stations.
Other things to note
As it's a walking tour, on city streets, just be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and be sure to dress for the English Climate, i.e. on a sunny day bring an umbrella, just in case.

I have been conducting both day and night time tours in the city of Canterbury since 1991, although my background is in Hotel Management, my ethos is always about putting my clients first. I am a writer and producer, and also volunteer for the Blind and Older people, to help them with everyday life. I live within a mile of the city centre and can offer tours at short notice, so if you're staying and need to book me just call me and I'll be there.

Dove ti troverai

Canterbury's history stretches back over the millenia, from pre-roman settlement to the present day city bustling with visitors, students, and locals alike. The footsteps of Pilgrims, and parsons, are etched into its fabric and the tour takes you in their footsteps. Starting in the Buttermarket, we trace the name of the city of Canterbury, and its place in English History, from St Augustine's arrival in 597 to the Saxon Churches, and the Normans.

Lots of information, lots of history, he showed how to spot original features and recognise later additions. Interesting facts about where certain expressions and turns of phrase came from. Two hours well spent.

John made this a very personal experience from the start. I am from the States and John's knowledge of my homeland was great! John is like a walking encyclopedia and shows you the secrets around Canterbury that you wouldn't know were there if you didn't go on this tour! Constant humour had my partner laughing all the way around. Thanks for making our experience of Canterbury worthwhile

We spent an morning with John sharing his knowledge of Canterbury and historical stories of the area. He also explained certain English phrases and where they came From in past history.

La mia esperienza con John è stata piacevole e rilassante. Una passeggiata senza fretta, alla scoperta di qualche dettaglio altrimenti invisibile al passante. Una bella città, con i suoi segreti e la sua storia.

John, the Tour guide, asked us not to write a nasty review and we do not want to but we feel we need to give an honest summary of the tour we attended yesterday. It felt like the tour guide was fabricating the information he was telling us. For example, he said that William the Conqueror was bipolar and that he preferred to be called William the Bastard rather than William the Conqueror. He spoke about the origin of the French anthem and this story was inaccurate (I checked right away on a reputable French website that confirmed his story was made up). He said the word Window came from the words 'Wind hole' (we checked online and got a totally different word origin for window), he went on to speak about poppies (the flowers) and said that poppies needed vibrations (like earthquakes) to grow. He added some information about half-timbered houses but I come from Normandy in France and we have similar houses so I knew his explanation was not correct either. We realised very quickly that the pieces of information he was giving us were inaccurate so after 45 minutes, we found an excuse and left the tour early. Some parts of the tour were offensive. For example, he started criticising and mimicking people from Newcastle. We feel extremely sorry for all the tourists who have believed or will believe his stories. He said to us he had been to Cambridge University where he had read history and we are now wondering if this is true. As native French and German speakers, we can confirm as well that he does not speak these languages fluently. If you end up booking this tour, please double-check the information he gives you and ask for a refund if it is inaccurate.
