What you'll do
The day starts with an introduction to Asociación Ondine followed by an explanation about marine conservation and the problems of plastic pollution. Participants are then provided with instructions and the necessary materials to conduct the beach clean. A group of volunteers is selected to conduct a micro-plastic survey together under the guidance of a marine biologist while other participants collect bigger pieces of rubbish. After the rubbish is collected it is gathered to be included in a scientific survey led by the Ondine team. All the collected items are separated into specific categories, counted and weighed. The data is then recorded before being disposed of in specific containers. Branded items are also recorded separately as they provide clues to the origins of the pollution. The activity is rounded off with a talk about findings and possible positive solutions. This is a public event and turnout usually incorporate 150 - 200 local participants creating a local, grassroots mass engagement event. Following the clean you will be taken to lunch in a local restaurant with an Asociación Ondine representative, to learn more about marine conservation with Q&A session.
