Cosa farete
You will create a piece of large format Japanese calligraphy in a traditional Japanese room under the supervision of 2nd generation grand master Rei Watanabe who will share her knowledge and demonstrate her technique.
I will explain the basics of Japanese contemporary calligraphy, inks and brushes, many of which will be displayed. Rei sensei will show you how she makes her art, after which you will choose a format and what you want to write (kanji or kana, to choose from our extensive material) before practicing several times under her supervision. I will provide English translation at all time. We will keep your best creation and sent it to you when dry.
Rei sensei is the daughter of contemporary calligraphy pioneer Seikai Kunii, (his art is at MoMA among others). She is the head of Seishinsha (founded in 1946, several exhibitions a year in famous museums in Tokyo), one of the top officials at the Sankei International Calligraphy Association and a famed calligrapher herself with 65 years of experience. Her public demonstrations are rare, her direct coaching very sought-after.
I have myself been practicing calligraphy for 5 years, have exhibited yearly and received several awards.

Alain
Born in France, I have spent 10 years in Tokyo including 5 years practicing Japanese calligraphy under master Rei Watanabe, whom I met at her yearly solo exhibition at theater Za-Koenji. Since then, I have exhibited in various formats at yearly exhibitions in the following museums : the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the National Art Center, the Ueno Royal Museum. I have received several awards in the process and am now a dedicated member of two calligraphy associations, Seishinsha and the Sankei International Calligraphy Association in both of which my rank has been rising steadily.

Dove ti troverai
Seishinsha calligraphy studio is a two story Japanese house, with a small garden and two parking spaces, fully and only dedicated to the practice of calligraphy where master Kunii used to create and master Rei now produces most her artworks.
The experience will take place upstairs in a wide Japanese room with tatami mats. We’ll practice on a sheet of felt covering the floor.
It is located in a very quiet neighbourhood not far from Koenji station.

Altri consigli
Please be aware that calligraphy ink is near impossible to take off clothes so don’t wear your best clothes if you’re worried you might stain them. Something comfortable to wear and move is best.
