Cosa farete

Experience the cultural heart of Auckland, on a 2-hour Home Fires of Tāmaki (Auckland) tour in Ōrākei. A short trip from the hustle of the central city, this magnificent whenua (land) is one of Auckland’s most tranquil locations.
Meet me, your kaiarahi (guide) at the Michael J Savage Memorial, overlooking the spectacular Waitematā harbour.

As ahikaa (keepers of the home fire of Auckland), I will provide a first-hand experience of the rich history of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei (local tribe), how we practise our cultural traditions and village life in modern day society.
Soak in picturesque 360° views towards Orākei Marae (traditional meeting house), looking across the harbour to Rangitoto Island, Auckland City and beyond. The photo opportunities are limitless.

Explore abandoned barracks and native bush, as you walk through our award-winning regeneration project “Ko Te Pūkākī”, while your experienced kaiarahi shares history and cultural tales of our tribe and Auckland.
Finish the tour at Takaparawhau, a significant location in our history with the opportunity to sit with me, your guide and ask questions, or use the time to take more spectacular pictures.

This is my pepeha (my story) in my native language Māori of how I am here today.
My canoe, my mountain, my ocean, my tribe, my sub tribe, my descendant, and my mum and dad who had me.

I have traveled the world, I have seen amazing places and I have learnt a lot about different nationalities and cultures. Now I want to share my culture - the Maori culture with visitors to Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland).
My iwi (tribe) is Ngati Whatua Orakei and with me, you will hear our stories.

Dove ti troverai

We will walk across Takaparawhau (Bastion Point) in Ōrākei, around our Māori Village. The views from this site take in the Auckland CBD and the magestic Rangitoto that sits proudly in the Waitemata Harbour. You will see our Marae
(meeting house) and learn about the flora and fauna and why our whenua (land) is so significant.

Today we experienced an extraordinary tour with our guide Dane where we got to know a lot of the cultural and historical background of the Māori. Dane is an amazing tour guide and super knowledgeable. We enjoyed our tour to the max and highly recommend booking him or his cousin Tui-Kay.

Tui-Kay and Dane really went out of their ways to help accommodate my family in both time and physical abilities so that we could take part in this tour. We learnt a lot and really felt welcomed into their world. I highly recommend everyone heading to Auckland to take part! Even if you've got some other cultural events planned! It's personalised and awesome. Send Tui-Kay a message and you might be able to work something out earlier or later in the day if the listed times are difficult :) you'll be glad you did!

Our family really appreciated the opportunity to walk with Tui-Kay in the gorgeous landscape of the traditional territory of Auckland. We knew we would have been missing an important experience of New Zealand had we not found this way to learn about Maori cultural traditions with an indigenous guide while in NZ. So, we were very happy when we found this experience on our last day. We were heartened to learn of the return to the old ways: to Maori language (beautiful to listen to), regeneration of gardens, medicines, housing, and education. Tui-Kay is a wonderful guide—so welcoming, respectful, informative, curious, and kind; the perfect guide who felt like an old friend by the end. Thank you, Tui-Kay!

I felt privileged to be on this tour. The insights into Maori culture, traditional and contemporary, were fascinating. The location is beautiful. The guide was young, but wise in the ways of her people. She made sure it was a two-way conversation, encouraging me to share stories of my family and experiences. Now is a time when the world needs the wisdom of traditional cultures more than ever.
