We meet up at Adams Arcade, Ngong road, for 10 minutes briefing then depart for guided tour of Toi market, Kenya's largest open-air secondhand clothes market. Here you also experience local peasant economy in action with cereal and artisanal traders. Colloquially, we call it here jua kali (hot sun) economy. It employs over 80% of Kenyans. Over 95% of Kenyans wear second hand clothes daily so Toi is kinda our big 'textile workshop'. We then head-off to Kibera via the historic Kenya-Uganda railway built in 1901 by the British and indentured Indian and Italian labourers. It's often teaming with a sea of humanity and animals crossing, especially when the train is approaching. Until Chinese-built standard gauge railway in 2016, it was the only railway line in Kenya in over 100 years. We then descent into Soweto & Kisumu Ndogo village within the slum where I lived during my law school days. We'll visit with the families that hosted me to get a sense of family life in the hood and get a glimpse of local sanitation challenges e.g. flying toilets. We then cross Kibera River to visit Congo side of the slum where you will experience spectacular view of UN Kibera slum upgrading project, local curio shops and Olmpic Primary School, Kenya's biggest public primary school. It was for a long time also the best performing school nationally.
Il tuo host
I am a youthful Kenyan lawyer and academic heavily invested in social entrepreneurship in Nairobi and Homa Bay, my rural birth place. I founded a charity, MAKLWETA, to help education of the neglected African girl-child in my village. This is something I am passionate about because of my background growing up in the village and later living in the slums in Nairobi. To help us sustain operations of the charity and employ local highly-educated but unemployed youths, I founded DALA TOURS, SAFARIS & VOLUNTEERS that organises Nairobi tours and daily Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru safaris. Kibera/Toi market tour is one of our most popular and takes you to my former house in Kibera. We visit with families including my relatives who still live there. Your reservation with us helps us create local employment and sustain operations of the charity.
